Buganda Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga
Buganda Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga spoke about the new map of Uganda, which recently created debate and controversy in the media. The issue was that the Buganda region, the country's largest ethnic region, was not shown on the map. Instead, areas called "North Central and South Central" were put in its place.
At an event held at Bulange Mengo on Tuesday, where Mayiga hosted Pastor Alysious Bugingo from the House of Prayer Ministries, the Prime Minister said the government recognized their mistake and corrected it.
The Buganda Kingdom was unhappy with this new map because it left out their kingdom again.
Buganda leaders said this problem has happened before, and they think it is not just an error but a planned attempt to reduce their kingdom's importance.
Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, the Minister for Communication in Buganda, spoke strongly against the map. He explained that this situation reminded him of a similar event in 2018 when the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) also left Buganda off an official map.
In 2018, during Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II’s 63rd birthday celebrations at Villa Maria in Masaka, the Kabaka openly criticized the action of leaving Buganda off the map.
Kazibwe recalled this and said, "This is not the first time such an act has happened. In 2018, UBOS released a map that did not include Buganda, and during the Kabaka’s 63rd birthday celebrations at Villa Maria, His Majesty publicly condemned this action."
Kazibwe warned people that this act could be a clear plan to change history and make people forget Buganda’s importance. He also mentioned that Prime Minister Mayiga often advises Buganda’s people to stay alert and protect the truth about their kingdom.
The latest map quickly spread on social media. It showed other cultural kingdoms like Acholi, West Nile, Karamoja, Bunyoro, Lango, Teso, Bugisu, Bukedi, Tooro, Ankole, Kigezi, and Busoga, but Buganda was missing. Kazibwe strongly said this was not just a mistake.
“As the spokesperson of Buganda Kingdom, I want to make it clear that this is a deliberate move meant to distract us from our main goals. However, it will not succeed,” Kazibwe stated.
He asked the people of Buganda to remain calm and united. Despite such challenges, he believes Buganda’s history is strong and "cannot be changed by maps."
