The 2026 presidential elections in Uganda have drawn significant attention, with five individuals expressing their intention to vie for the highest office in the country. Each candidate brings a unique background and vision to the political arena.
George William Magera
George William Magera, the President of the People's Progressive Party-Uganda, is running for the first time. He is a graduate of Uganda Christian University with a Bachelor’s degree in Logistics Management (2018) and is currently pursuing a Master’s in International Policy and Practice with a focus on Security.
Magera’s leadership experience includes heading the Progressive Party since 2018 and co-founding an NGO in 2010, which addresses pressing issues such as health, poverty, and education challenges in Uganda.
Apostle Henry Byamukama
Apostle Henry Byamukama, Secretary-General of the Labour Party, is another notable aspirant. Byamukama is well-known for his spiritual and humanitarian efforts, serving as the founder of Faith Life Ministries and President of Encounter Jesus Worldwide Ministries. He has led impactful initiatives, such as a donation drive for communities affected by the Kiteezi landfill collapse.
Additionally, Byamukama is the CEO of Breakthrough Media (BTM TV). Married to Lillian Mirembe Byamukama, he balances his family life with his public roles. He previously expressed interest in running for president in 2021 but did not enter the race.
Muhammad Nsereko
Muhammad Nsereko, an independent candidate, has been a Member of Parliament representing Kampala Central Division since 2011. A lawyer by profession, Nsereko holds a Diploma in Journalism (2005), a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University (2006), and a Diploma in Legal Practice (2007).
He has also served as a partner at Nsereko, Mukalazi, and Company Advocates and chaired the Kampala Central Land Committee from 2006 to 2010. Nsereko is recognized for his independent stance and dedication to addressing urban issues.
Bobi Wine
Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has also declared his candidacy. A former musician turned politician, Bobi Wine made his political debut in 2017, winning the Kyadondo County East by-election through a grassroots campaign.
His presidential bid in the 2021 elections resonated with many Ugandans, particularly the youth, due to his progressive ideas and calls for change. Born on February 12, 1982, at Nkozi Hospital, Bobi Wine continues to be a prominent figure in Uganda’s political landscape.
Yoweri Kaguta Museveni
Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Uganda's current president and leader of the National Resistance Movement, is seeking re-election. Born on September 15, 1944, Museveni has been in power since 1986, shaping Uganda's political and economic landscape for nearly four decades.
 His tenure is marked by both transformative achievements and contentious debates over leadership longevity.
These candidates represent diverse backgrounds, ideologies, and aspirations, promising an engaging and competitive electoral process in Uganda’s 2026 presidential race.
