Parents to babies
A 40-year-old woman from Nyamufumura village in Sheema District has given birth to six babies at once, bringing both joy and concern to her family and the community.
Glorious Betonde, who lives in Sheema Central Division, Sheema Municipality, delivered five boys and one girl through a cesarean section. The babies were born early at seven months of pregnancy at Neo Care Fertility Centre in Mbarara City.
Because they were born prematurely, the babies needed special medical care. They were moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital in Nyamitanga, Mbarara City, where doctors are giving them close monitoring and medical support to help them grow and survive.
Dr. Mike Kyewalyanga, a pediatrician at the hospital, said they are doing everything possible to help the newborns, even though there may be some challenges ahead. "Feeding and breathing might be hard for them, but we’ve successfully managed similar cases before," he said.
The babies were transferred to the ICU on Good Friday, just a short time after their birth.
Glorious shared that her pregnancy was extremely difficult. “At three months, I was told I might lose them. By seven months, I could hardly walk. The doctors had to act fast because my uterus was close to bursting,” she explained.
Despite the challenges, she was filled with joy and called the birth a miracle. This is her second time becoming a mother. “I thank God. I feel so blessed,” she said, although she admitted to feeling worried about how she will raise all six children in Uganda’s tough economic situation.
The Mayor of Sheema Central Division, Moses Bansigaraho Bishweko, also shared his joy and praised Glorious for her strength. He described the birth as a rare and special moment for the whole community.
While this story is filled with happiness, it also brings attention to the pressures many Ugandan families face—especially when it comes to healthcare access and the cost of raising children.
