Manchester City's Rodri was awarded the 2024 Ballon d’Or, surpassing Real Madrid stars Vinicius Junior, Dani Carvajal, Jude Bellingham, and Kylian Mbappe at the ceremony held in Paris, France.
The 28-year-old midfielder received the honor after a successful season with Manchester City, securing the Premier League title, and playing a crucial role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory. In response to the outcome, Real Madrid chose not to send representatives to the event following news that Vinicius Junior would not receive the award.
Vinicius, instrumental in Real Madrid's victories in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, was notably absent from the ceremony. This decision came after the club had been informed of the award results beforehand.
Speaking to DAILY POST, journalist Femi Fabunmi highlighted Rodri’s significant contributions to both his club and national team, emphasizing the rarity of defensive players receiving the Ballon d’Or. He also noted the expected disappointment from Vinicius, stating that participation in the Copa America could have potentially altered the results.
Real Madrid's absence at the ceremony was a direct reflection of their initial expectations to bring the award back to Bernabeu, added Fabunmi, who also advised Vinicius to look forward to future opportunities.
