Football fans don’t go to matches to see defensive setups; they’re there for the thrill, the goals, and moments of magic. They go to see players like Cole Palmer.
“People pay to watch players like him,”
said Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca after Palmer’s impressive performance in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Newcastle on Sunday.
“We’re thrilled to have him here.”
Palmer not only scored the winning goal, marking his seventh goal in nine games this season, but also delivered an incredible 60-yard pass to set up Nicolas Jackson's opener. Sky Sports’ Alan Smith called it
“the pass of the season,”
while Jamie Carragher praised it as one of the best passes he’s seen in the Premier League. Roy Keane added,
“Even his awareness and execution are spot on.”
In the stands, Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola watched on, admiring Palmer’s instinctive vision.
“When he gets the ball, he’s already planning his next move,”
Zola noted, emphasizing a skill only a few players possess. Palmer, only 22, acknowledged Zola’s talent, though admitted he only knew Zola from FIFA, saying,
“He must have been good.”
Despite the praise, Palmer stays grounded. Last season, in his debut with Chelsea, he scored 22 goals and made 11 assists. Now, he aims to enjoy each game, setting aside external expectations.
“I try not to put pressure on myself,”
Palmer said. His goal? To focus on doing his best for Chelsea, now just a point away from the Premier League's top four.
“We focus on our game and block out the noise,”
he added.
“We’re a young team with a top coach, but there’s more to come.”
