NUP has petitioned court over the alleged abduction of Eddy Mutwe, accusing security forces of targeting opposition voices.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has taken the Ugandan government to court, demanding that the missing head of Robert Kyagulanyi’s security team, Edward Ssebufu, also known as Eddy Mutwe, be brought to court or released immediately.

Mutwe has been missing for three days. He was reportedly taken by unknown people from his home in Mukono on Sunday under unclear circumstances. NUP believes this was a planned abduction by state agents.

At a press conference held at the NUP offices in Makerere Kavule, Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, confirmed that the party’s legal team had officially filed a petition in court. They are asking the government to show proof of Mutwe’s location or let him go free.

“If he has a case, let him be brought before a judge,” Kyagulanyi said. “We want justice, not secret arrests.”

He strongly criticized what he called a “clear pattern” of abductions aimed at NUP members and supporters. Kyagulanyi said this was not the first time state security operatives had taken people without explanation. Many of those who later returned said they had been held by government agents—even though the authorities deny this.

“These actions are not just about Mutwe. They are meant to scare me and those around me,” Kyagulanyi added. “But I will not stop fighting for the rights of our people.”

He also pointed to recent raids on NUP offices, which he believes were part of efforts to slow down the party’s preparations for the 2026 elections. He said the attacks on opposition members are illegal and show the government’s fear of political competition.

“Whatever they do, we are not going to give up,” he said. “We are on a mission to return power to the people.”

NUP is also calling for the release of all political prisoners, saying the government must follow the rule of law instead of using threats, fear, and arrests to silence opposition voices.

Mutwe’s disappearance is one of many recent cases where opposition members and activists have reportedly been kidnapped or arrested by security forces. NUP accuses the government of using these methods to break down opposition movements and silence critics ahead of the elections.
