Nairobi City Thunder, Kenya's basketball champions, are set to face Uganda's City Oilers in a crucial semi-final of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) East Division qualifiers. The game is scheduled for 8:30 PM on Monday at the Moi International Sports Centre Indoor Arena in Nairobi. The winner will secure a spot in the 2025 BAL, Africa's premier club basketball competition.
In preparation, Thunder's deputy coach, Sadat Gaya, expressed confidence:
"It's either we win, or go home! It's one more hurdle which we have to jump before we can qualify for Basketball Africa League proper."
He acknowledged the pressure but affirmed the team's readiness. Gaya also mentioned plans to analyze City Oilers' recent games to identify strategic advantages.
Thunder advanced to the semi-finals after an undefeated run in Group A, culminating in a 91-68 victory over Malawi's Brave Hearts. Gaya emphasized the importance of improving game execution and minimizing turnovers, areas that posed challenges in previous matches. He also highlighted the significance of home-court support, stating that the team will rely on local fans for motivation.
The upcoming match is pivotal for Nairobi City Thunder as they aim to become the first Kenyan team to qualify for the BAL. The team's performance thus far has been promising, and they are determined to continue their success against the formidable City Oilers.
