Ongoing renovations at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani in Nairobi, Kenya, in preparation for the 2024 CHAN tournament.
Kenya is working hard to prepare its stadiums for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which it will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania in February 2025. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has set a December deadline for the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi to be ready.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen recently visited Kasarani Stadium and expressed confidence in the progress. He noted that the contractor is working around the clock to ensure renovations are completed on time.
The renovations include installing new canopies, upgrading lighting systems, and replacing tartan tracks. Additional training facilities, such as MISC Kasarani Annex, Kenya Academy of Sports, Kirigiti Stadium, Police Sacco Stadium, and Ulinzi Sports Complex, are also being prepared.
This is the first time CHAN will be hosted by three nations, highlighting the importance of meeting CAF standards promptly. CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe plans to visit Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in December to assess the readiness of the stadiums and other facilities.
Kenya's commitment to upgrading its sports infrastructure is also part of its preparation to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. The government is investing in projects like the Talanta Sports City and the renovation of existing stadiums to align with international standards.
