Katikkiro Mayiga Rejects Political Pressure,The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owekitiibwa Charles Peter Mayiga, has made it clear that he will not allow political groups to use him for their agendas. Speaking in a live interview on Sanyuka TV with Brian Macona, Mayiga revealed that after the Kawempe North by-election, some supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) tried to pressure him into calling the election unfair.
“I told them clearly, ‘I’m not the Electoral Commission,’” Mayiga said. “That is not my responsibility.”
He explained that his main role is to serve the Kingdom of Buganda and its people—not to get involved in party politics. He noted that many people often try to guess where his loyalty lies, with some assuming he supports the ruling NRM and others claiming he backs the opposition NUP.
“But I don’t belong to any side,” Mayiga said. “I focus on what benefits our people.”
Reflecting on his time in office, Mayiga shared both the joys and the difficulties he has experienced as Katikkiro. He recalled how, in 2008, he was arrested due to land-related issues but chose to stay committed to his mission for Buganda.
He also spoke about the tough period following the 2010 fire that destroyed the historic Kasubi Royal Tombs. Despite the loss, Mayiga said the unity of the people during the rebuilding process was powerful. “People gave support, and we managed to rise again,” he said.
Mayiga added that he leads with honesty, patience, and understanding. “I do not lie. I show up, I do the work, and I speak the truth—even when it's not popular,” he stated.

He also gave an example of being misunderstood by government officials when he advised farmers to harvest only ripe, red coffee beans. What seemed like simple farming advice, he said, became controversial.
“Even that caused issues, which surprised me,” he said.
Mayiga’s message was clear: he will not be drawn into political fights or used to push false claims. His leadership style is based on truth, transparency, and unity.
“I will continue to speak the truth, whether people like it or not,” he concluded.
