The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway Uganda
The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway has achieved remarkable success after three years of tolling operations, exceeding both revenue and traffic projections.
Increased Usage and Revenue Growth
The expressway has proven to be an essential link between Kampala and Entebbe, with a notable increase in daily vehicle traffic. According to Eng. Stephen Kitonsa, the Acting Engineer in Chief at the Ministry of Works and Transport, the road now accommodates an average of 28,000 vehicles daily, surpassing the earlier estimate of 18,447 vehicles per day.
Revenue collection has also significantly improved, rising from an average of UGX 2.8 billion per month in 2022 to UGX 3.7 billion in 2024. This growth reflects the road's efficiency and its vital role in generating funds to meet government financial obligations, including loan repayments.
Improved Services for Motorists
The increased toll revenue has enabled the expressway to introduce several services aimed at enhancing road safety and convenience for motorists. These include:
24/7 patrols to ensure security and respond to emergencies.
A well-organized incident management system to reduce disruptions.
Breakdown and towing services to assist stranded vehicles.
Emergency ambulance services for quick medical response.
Eng. Kitonsa emphasized that these services are a direct result of efficient toll operations and reflect the government’s commitment to improving road safety and user experience.
Positive Impact on National Development
Beyond easing transportation between Kampala and Entebbe, the expressway serves as a model for infrastructure financing and sustainability through tolling. The revenue generated has played a key role in repaying government loans, highlighting the strategic significance of the expressway.
Appreciation and Future Enhancements
Expressing gratitude to road users, Eng. Kitonsa acknowledged their role in the expressway’s success. “We appreciate all motorists for their continued support over the past three years. Our goal is to keep improving services to serve you even better,” he stated.
Moving forward, the Ministry of Works and Transport plans to further enhance the expressway’s services while exploring ways to accommodate the increasing number of users efficiently
