Former presidential candidate and opposition leader, Gen. Mugisha Muntu, has called on opposition parties to stay alert after Elias Nalukoola won the Kawempe North by-election.
During an interview on Next Radio, Muntu congratulated Nalukoola and the National Unity Platform (NUP), reminding them that the political struggle in Uganda is not over yet.
"Our heartfelt congratulations to Hon. Elias Nalukoola—I believe he will bring vibrancy to the August House," Muntu said. He also praised NUP for its dedication to democracy. "Congratulations also to NUP. The struggle continues, and we must keep tightening our belts," he added, urging opposition leaders to stay focused and not become too comfortable.
NUP officials believe Nalukoola’s victory shows that Ugandans want change. "The people of Kawempe North have spoken, and no amount of intimidation will silence them," NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi said.
However, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has rejected the election results and plans to challenge them in court. NRM leaders claim there were irregularities during the election, but opposition leaders strongly deny these claims.
The by-election took place amid reports of violence, with some voters allegedly being threatened by security forces. Opposition supporters accused government agencies of using fear to discourage people from voting.
Journalists covering the election also reported cases of harassment, which has raised concerns about press freedom in Uganda. Several media organizations condemned the intimidation of reporters and called for better protection of journalists during elections.
Muntu’s statements reflect a common belief among opposition leaders that achieving change requires determination and unity. He encouraged different opposition groups to stand together, warning that the ruling party’s tactics are meant to divide and weaken them.
"As long as we remain united, we will overcome any obstacle. The people of Uganda deserve better, and we must not lose focus," he said.
