The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has revealed its plans to hold a vibrant protest at the Kenyan High Commission in Kampala on the upcoming Wednesday.
This decision comes as a reaction to a provocative headline by The Standard, a Kenyan newspaper, which labeled General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, a high-ranking official in the Ugandan military and the son of President Yoweri Museveni, as a "Four-star brat."
Daudi Kabanda, the Secretary-General of PLU, sharply criticized the Kenyan media for what he considered a disrespectful portrayal of Gen. Kainerugaba, who also serves as the chairman of PLU. Kabanda stated, “PLU is going to hold an energetic demonstration at the Kenyan High Commission next week on Wednesday,” emphasizing the intent to address the insult robustly.
The controversial article in The Standard drew attention to Gen. Kainerugaba's prominent role in both military and political arenas in Uganda, critiquing his online conduct and what it described as diplomatic blunders. This follows an incident last year where a Kenyan act against Uganda’s diplomatic premises went unanswered, leading to heightened tensions this time around.
Kabanda expressed strong discontent with the Kenyan newspaper's narrative: “They burnt our High Commission last year and we did not respond. Now, one of their newspapers has insulted our PLU Chairman. We will respond with full force!”
This planned demonstration is part of a series of responses by PLU to what they perceive as continuous disrespect towards their leader. Previously, PLU had organized a demonstration against Ugandan MPs who had openly criticized Gen. Kainerugaba for ignoring a parliamentary summons. The summons were related to his public statements and social media activity, which some lawmakers found objectionable.
Despite the uproar, the Kenyan government has not officially commented, but the issue has stirred significant discussion among netizens in both Uganda and Kenya, with some Ugandans demanding retaliation while Kenyans argue for the merits of journalistic freedom.
