Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, the candidate for the National Unity Platform (NUP), has won the Kawempe North by-election. His main opponent, Mukiibi Sadat from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), finished far behind, prompting the FDC to admit defeat.
On Tuesday, FDC president Patrick Oboi Amuriat acknowledged Nalukoola’s victory but questioned the credibility of the results given to their candidate.
“As we congratulate the declared winner, we remain skeptical of the figures assigned to our candidate. This outcome doesn’t reflect our historical strength in Kawempe North,” Amuriat stated.
Although he accepted the loss, Amuriat strongly criticized the election process, blaming security forces for using excessive force during the by-election. He cautioned that such actions could harm Uganda’s democracy, especially with the 2026 general elections approaching.
The by-election took place following the death of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. Nalukoola received 17,764 votes, securing a strong lead over NRM’s Namabi Faridah Kigongo, who managed 8,593 votes.
Meanwhile, the NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong dismissed the election outcome, accusing NUP and FDC supporters of stirring up violence and intimidating voters.
Nalukoola, celebrating his victory, emphasized its importance for the people of Kawempe North. "This victory symbolizes the people's unwavering desire for change and better leadership," he said.
Following the election, tensions remain high, with increasing demands for reforms in the electoral process. NUP supporters view Nalukoola’s win as a significant step forward for opposition politics in Uganda.
