Residents of Kawempe North will cast their votes in a by-election scheduled for 13th March 2025 to elect a new parliamentary representative. The election follows the passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, who died on 9th January 2025 at Lubaga Hospital after a long illness.
Electoral Commission Announces Roadmap
On 27th January 2025, the Electoral Commission (EC) released the official roadmap for the by-election. The election process will begin on 27th January and conclude on 13th March 2025, culminating in the selection of a new Member of Parliament for Kawempe North. The EC has assured the public of a transparent and structured voting process to ensure fairness.
Key Dates for the By-Election
The Electoral Commission has set the following important dates for the election process:
27th January 2025:Â Stakeholders' meeting and press briefing in Kawempe North.
27th – 31st January 2025: Updating the National Voters’ Register.
31st January 2025:Â Deadline for voter registration and transfer of polling stations.
10th – 19th February 2025: Display of the Voters’ Register at designated polling stations.
26th – 27th February 2025: Candidate nominations at the Office of the Returning Officer.
28th February – 11th March 2025: Official campaign period.
13th March 2025:Â Polling Day.
To ensure a smooth election, recruitment and training of election officials will be carried out throughout February.
Candidates Vying for the Seat
Several aspirants have declared their interest in contesting for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat. Some of the notable candidates include:
Moses Ali Jjemba:Â A National Resistance Movement (NRM) member from Mbogo Village.
Erias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola:Â A well-known lawyer seeking the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, focusing on youth development in sports and music.
Salim Serunkuuma:Â A businessman and former candidate dedicated to tackling youth unemployment.
Mathias Mulumba (Kikumi Kya Doola):Â The LC1 chairman of Corner Zone, bringing 20 years of experience in community leadership.
Juliet Namale:Â An NRM member advocating for improved urban healthcare and partnerships between businesses and local communities.
Umar Magala: A professional teacher and NUP coordinator for Kawempe North, pledging to continue Ssegirinya’s projects, such as hospital and ambulance services.
Alex Luswa Luwemba:Â Former personal assistant to the late Ssegirinya, who recently changed his name to 'Muhammad Luwemba' in preparation for the election.
Muhamood Mutazindwa: Representing the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), he is committed to maintaining Ssegirinya’s projects without alterations.
Onesmus Mutumba:Â An NRM member aiming to address key challenges affecting Kawempe North residents.
The Electoral Commission has urged all political parties, candidates, and voters to maintain peace throughout the electoral process. The EC has reiterated its commitment to conducting a free and fair election. With the campaign period beginning on 28th February, political competition is expected to intensify, particularly from the opposition NUP, which previously held the seat.
