Dr. Kizza Besigye appeared in court visibly ill, prompting urgent calls for his release to receive medical care.

Dr. Kizza Besigye, a well-known opposition leader in Uganda, was seen in poor health during his recent court appearance at Buganda Road Court on Friday. Besigye, who had previously missed court dates due to health issues, showed troubling symptoms during the session.

The video footage from the court displayed him struggling with basic motor skills, trembling, and unable to close his mouth, which caused widespread concern.

The situation has alarmed supporters and human rights groups, who are urgently calling for his release from Luzira Prison to receive medical care. There are fears that his health is rapidly declining due to the harsh conditions in detention. His lawyer, Erias Lukwago, has highlighted the severe deterioration of Besigye’s health and the need for immediate medical intervention.

People aslo read:

This incident reminds Besigye’s supporters of a dark past event where his younger brother, Joseph Musasizi Kifefe, suffered a similar fate. Kifefe died after contracting an illness in the same prison during the mid-2000s, and many believe that his life could have been saved with earlier medical treatment. The tragic outcome has intensified calls to prevent another loss due to delayed healthcare.

Advocates are pressing the government to prioritize human life over political conflicts and are anxiously waiting for the court’s decision on whether Besigye will be allowed to seek medical treatment. With Besigye’s health visibly failing, there is growing pressure on the authorities to act quickly to safeguard his well-being.
