Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has taken responsibility for the team’s 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in their final AFCON 2025 Group D qualifier.

Nigeria took the lead through a brilliant strike from Samuel Chukwueze but conceded two quick goals due to defensive lapses. Troost-Ekong admitted his role in the defensive errors.

“Yes, you’re right, and I take responsibility,” he told reporters. “As captain and the last man at the back, I know we should have done better. Free kicks, like other set-piece situations, can trouble any team, and I think that’s what happened today.”

The loss marked a disappointing end to Nigeria’s qualification campaign despite already securing a spot in the tournament.
