Heavy rains cause floods in Kampala, killing 5, including 2 children. Police urge caution and safety measures during ongoing rescue efforts.

Heavy rains have caused serious flooding in Kampala today. Kampala Metropolitan Police and the Fire Prevention and Rescue team are currently responding to emergency calls from several areas affected by floods.

Flooding caused motor accidents, swept away people walking on roads, and damaged many homes and businesses. Sadly, five people died because of the floods.

Three bodies were found in Kinawataka, and police are still trying to identify who they are. Two children also drowned inside their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto. They were Otim Kisa Eliza, aged 3, and Ochaka Chon, aged 11 months.

Their mother, Lenunu Rose Mary, had locked them in the house while she went to work. She has been arrested by Kira Road Police on suspicion of negligence because neighbours said she often left the children alone.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, confirmed these deaths. He said that rescue teams are still helping people and checking affected areas.

“We urge the public to take precautionary measures during heavy rains to avoid further accidents,” Owoyesigyire said.

Police advised the public to avoid unnecessary movements during heavy rains. They specifically warned boda boda riders to wait for floodwaters to go down before crossing roads. Residents were also asked to make sure their homes are secure and to keep their children safe during extreme weather.

The bodies of those who died have been taken to Mulago Hospital City Mortuary for further examination. Police promise to give more updates as they learn more.

The police also sent condolences to the families of the victims and reminded everyone to stay careful during this rainy season.
