Former Ugandan Opposition Leader and journalist, Wafula Oguttu
Former Ugandan Opposition Leader and experienced journalist, Wafula Oguttu, has suggested that Uganda should skip the 2026 elections. He believes the outcome is already set in favor of President Yoweri Museveni.
Oguttu shared his thoughts on X, where he criticized Uganda’s electoral process. He claimed that elections in the country are just a staged performance controlled by Museveni.
He argued that instead of organizing another costly election, Museveni should remain in power unopposed. He also suggested that Museveni could appoint his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as Vice President and divide parliamentary seats among political parties.
"Instead of wasting money on yet another Museveni-organized violent elections theatrical, let him be unopposed in 2026, appoint his CDF son VP and openly allocate MPs lots to various parties. Then, let the money meant to be for elections be put to better use on social services," Oguttu wrote.
His statement highlights concerns raised by opposition groups and critics who claim that Uganda’s elections are unfair. They accuse the government of election fraud, voter suppression, and state-sponsored violence.
Since 1986, Museveni has been accused of using government resources to keep his hold on power.
With less than two years before the election, Oguttu’s remarks are likely to spark more debate about Uganda’s political future. Many are questioning whether there will be real democratic changes or if the country will experience another disputed election.
