Tanzania strengthens data privacy with legal reforms and digital strategy

On World Privacy Day, Tanzania is being recognized for its remarkable achievements in data privacy and protection, positioning itself as a regional leader in digital governance.

Key Milestones and Achievements

One of the major achievements is the enactment of the Personal Data Protection Act (2022). This law mandates public and private institutions to obtain individuals’ consent before using their data. It establishes a legal framework that ensures transparency, accountability, and the protection of citizens' privacy.

Another significant step forward is the launch of the Digital Economy Strategy (2024–2034). This strategy prioritizes safe data management while also fostering innovation and resilience in the digital sector. It aims to create a secure and inclusive digital economy, ensuring that businesses and individuals operate in a trustworthy digital environment.

Tanzania has also made notable progress in public awareness campaigns. Through nationwide initiatives via radio, TV, and seminars, the government has been educating citizens on their privacy rights and data protection. These campaigns encourage individuals to make informed decisions about their personal information in the digital space.

In addition to domestic progress, Tanzania has gained global recognition for cybersecurity. The country was ranked Tier 1 in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This ranking highlights Tanzania as a leader in cybersecurity across East, Central, and Southern Africa, reflecting the government's commitment to implementing robust digital security measures.

World Privacy Day 2025 Theme

The theme for this year’s World Privacy Day is “Ensuring Privacy and Protecting Personal Data in the Digital Era”. It emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts to uphold privacy and safeguard personal data in line with national laws and international standards.

Tanzania’s proactive approach to digital security, privacy rights, and data protection underscores its commitment to a secure and trustworthy digital future.
