President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced that the government will start the tendering process on March 6 to hire a contractor for a road construction project in Tanga Region. This project includes a 22-kilometer paved road connecting Soni to Bumbuli-Korogwe, along with an additional 9.3 kilometers from Meta to Kwashemsi. The goal is to boost economic growth in the region.

Speaking to the residents of Lushoto District on the second day of her five-day visit to Tanga, President Samia also mentioned the ongoing construction of the Bagamoyo-Tanga road. She further revealed that she will lay the foundation stone for the Pangani Bridge and its related road infrastructure the next day.

“We are opening up Tanga by linking it to Zanzibar and Pemba through maritime transport. This will help Pemba, which relies heavily on goods from Tanga, and will ultimately boost Tanga’s economy,” President Samia stated.

In addition, the President directed the Minister of Tourism to review the compensation guidelines for farmers whose crops are destroyed by wild animals. She emphasized the importance of ensuring fair compensation for the farmers.

“I want the Minister to explore the possibility of revising the compensation regulations for farmers whose crops are destroyed by animals, ensuring that the compensation is fair and adequately compensates for their losses,” she added.

President Samia also encouraged employees at the Bumbuli District Council to fully utilize the newly launched office building to serve the public efficiently. She stressed the need to maintain the facility properly.

During the event, she praised the residents of Lushoto for maintaining a clean environment, noting that the air quality was significantly better in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of State in the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government, the Minister for Lands, Housing, and Human Settlements Development, Deogratius Ndejembi, highlighted the government’s commitment to improving education and healthcare in Lushoto District.

He revealed that the government has allocated more than 21 billion Tanzanian shillings for the construction of new secondary schools and six new primary schools. This funding aims to reduce the long distances students have to travel to school.

Additionally, over 5 billion Tanzanian shillings have been set aside to build and complete 17 health centers in the district, including four new centers between 2021 and 2024.

“Overall, the government has allocated over 32 billion Tanzanian shillings to this district for education, health, and other infrastructure projects. This is a significant investment,” he said.

Tanga Regional Commissioner, Ambassador Dr. Batilda Burian, expressed gratitude to President Samia for consistently allocating funds for development projects. She acknowledged the 24 billion Tanzanian shillings allocated for the construction of municipal and district council buildings as a vital investment in the region.
