India has shown interest in investing in Tanzania's energy sector through private sector partnerships. This aligns with Tanzania's current efforts to promote clean cooking energy.
Tanzania’s National Strategy for Clean Cooking Energy aims to ensure that more than 80% of its population has access to clean cooking energy by 2034.
The interest from India was announced in New Delhi by India’s Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh. He stated that India is eager to invest in LPG cylinder distribution as part of a larger plan to engage in Tanzania’s energy sector.
His remarks were made while Tanzania’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, was attending the 3rd Annual India Energy Week 2025. This four-day international event focuses on global energy developments.
During discussions in New Delhi, Dr. Biteko and Minister Singh explored ways to strengthen trade ties between Tanzania and India. They discussed private-sector investments and capacity-building initiatives to enhance energy collaboration between the two nations.
Dr. Biteko welcomed Indian investment in Tanzania, encouraging Indian companies to explore opportunities in electricity, LPG distribution, and bulk fuel procurement. He emphasized Tanzania’s commitment to using its resources effectively to maintain a stable and sufficient energy supply to meet the growing demand.
Highlighting the importance of private investment, Dr. Biteko stated that Tanzania needs $12 billion to achieve energy self-sufficiency. He urged Indian investors to take part in the country’s energy development projects.
