REG BBC opts out of the East Africa Basketball Champions Cup to focus on their women’s team competing in the Africa Women’s Basketball League.
REG BBC has announced that it will not participate in the new "East Africa Basketball Champions Cup" set to take place in December 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya.
This tournament replaces the traditional Zone V competition to give teams that do not participate in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) more chances to compete.
Last year, Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA) introduced the Rwanda Cup to select a team to represent the country in this tournament. APR BBC won the inaugural Rwanda Cup but cannot play in the East Africa Basketball Champions Cup because they also won the national league, earning them a spot in BAL.
As a result, REG BBC, which lost to APR BBC in the final, was expected to represent Rwanda. However, REG's Sports Coordinator, Geoffrey Zawadi, told IGIHE that the team would not attend because their focus is on supporting their women’s team, which will compete in the Africa Women’s Basketball League in December 2024.
He said,
"No, we will not participate because we are focusing on the women’s team, which will compete in AfroBasket soon."
IGIHE learned that REG BBC has not yet officially informed FERWABA about this decision.
The exact dates for the tournament have not been announced, but it is confirmed to take place in December 2024 in Kenya.
