This is What will happen to those who breach Eskom meter upgrade deadline Mbeki edmond Nov 28, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link City Power, Johannesburg’s power utility, has extended its own conversion deadline Eskom has introduced a new deadline for customers with outdated prepaid electricity meters to switch to the KRN2 system. These "zero buyers," who either bypass payment systems or purchase electricity illegally, have until 13 December 2024 to comply or risk disconnection. Fines and other penalties will still apply for non-compliance, Eskom said. After the initial 24 November 2024 deadline, Eskom managed to convert around 400,000 zero buyers to paying customers. However, 1.7 million of the original 2.1 million non-vending meters remain unresolved. Eskom’s strategy aims to reduce illegal electricity use, tampering, and non-payment. While Eskom expects all zero buyers to comply by the new deadline, it has stated, “We hope that (by) the deadline, all the customers may at least have made their meters KRN2 compliant.” Beyond this date, Eskom will focus on enforcing penalties, addressing fines, replacing meters, and disconnecting non-compliant users. City Power, Johannesburg’s power utility, has extended its own conversion deadline to 31 May 2025 . Technically, KRN1 meters can still be updated to KRN2 if the necessary codes are available. Penalties and Costs Eskom is also targeting illegal power users with hefty fines to encourage them to switch to paying systems. The utility warns that tampered meters could result in a replacement cost of R12,000 . For illegal connections, fines of R6,000 are applied, and reconnection only occurs after these fines are paid. City Power has waived tampering penalties until 30 November to help customers reconnect quickly, while the City of Tshwane has introduced a R29,000 tamper fee for meters found operating illegally. Tshwane also allows customers to make payment agreements at customer care offices to resolve their status. The issue of unpaid electricity is a major financial burden, costing municipalities and Eskom over R2 billion per month , or R24 billion annually . Eskom CEO Dan Marokane emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, “(This) in the interest of those who already pay for electricity, maintain the sustainability of Eskom to drive the economic growth of South Africa and reduce our burden on the taxpayer.” Business and Industry Thika Cloth Mills Boosts Kenya’s Cotton Industry . - Former Mozambican Minister Found Guilty in Landmark $2 Billion 'Tuna Bond' Corruption Scandal | Xtrafrica
Former Mozambican Minister Found Guilty in Landmark $2 Billion 'Tuna Bond' Corruption Scandal Griffith Sarah Aug 9, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Mozambican former finance minister Manuel Chang A US court has found Manuel Chang, a former Mozambican finance minister, guilty of his involvement in one of Africa’s most significant corruption scandals, often referred to as the "tuna bond" scandal. The conspiracy, which began over a decade ago, triggered Mozambique's worst economic crisis since gaining independence. Chang was convicted of accepting bribes through US banks in exchange for approving secret loans. These loans were ostensibly intended to fund a fleet of tuna fishing vessels and other projects. However, the funds were misappropriated, leaving Mozambique burdened with $2 billion in debt. Chang, who served as finance minister from 2005 to 2015, was arrested in South Africa in 2018 and extradited to the US in 2019 to face charges of fraud and money laundering. The Mozambican government had sought to have Chang tried on home soil, but the US courts proceeded with the case, ultimately finding him guilty. He now faces a potential 20-year prison sentence, although his lawyers have indicated plans to appeal the verdict. The case is widely regarded as one of the most significant corruption cases in Africa. The loans involved in the scandal were issued by Credit Suisse and the Russian bank VTB, with guarantees provided by the Mozambican government. Some of these loans were undisclosed, and Chang played a key role in approving them. During the trial, the court heard evidence that Chang accepted $7 million in bribes from the shipbuilding company Privinvest. However, his defense argued that there was no evidence Chang received any money and claimed the projects were authorized by then-President Armando Guebuza and other ministers. Assistant US Attorney Genny Ngai, in her closing arguments, emphasized that Chang was instrumental in the approval of the loans, stating, "He cared about money over his position." Three former Credit Suisse bankers had previously pleaded guilty to money laundering charges related to the "tuna bond" case, and in 2021, UK authorities fined the bank $178 million as part of a $475 million settlement with regulators in the UK, Switzerland, and the US. The fallout from the fraudulent deal has been severe, with millions of people in Mozambique being pushed into poverty and billions of dollars in economic growth lost. An independent audit, commissioned by the International Monetary Fund, revealed that around £500 million in funds had been siphoned off, and the whereabouts of this money remain unknown. Despite its wealth of natural resources, including large offshore gas reserves and ruby mines, Mozambique remains one of the poorest countries in Africa. The country’s economic growth in recent years has done little to alleviate widespread poverty. Breon Peace, the US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, called the verdict "an inspiring victory for justice and the people of Mozambique who were betrayed by the defendant, a corrupt, high-ranking government official whose greed and self-interest sold out one of the poorest countries in the world." - South Africa's Johann Rupert Overtakes Aliko Dangote as Africa's Richest Man | Xtrafrica
South Africa's Johann Rupert Overtakes Aliko Dangote as Africa's Richest Man Mbeki edmond Aug 28, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Johann Rupert, a South African billionaire, has surpassed Nigeria's Aliko Dangote to become the richest man in Africa Johann Rupert, a South African billionaire, has surpassed Nigeria's Aliko Dangote to become the richest man in Africa, according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Rupert, the owner of Richemont, a global leader in luxury brands like Cartier and Montblanc, now holds a net worth of $14.3 billion. This marks a significant increase from $1.9 billion, pushing him to 147th place globally, 12 spots ahead of Dangote. Rupert's Luxury Empire Rupert's wealth is tied to his ownership of Richemont, which operates some of the world's most prestigious luxury brands. Headquartered in Switzerland, Richemont is a giant in the luxury goods industry, with a focus on jewelry, watches, and accessories. Rupert also has extensive investments through Remgro, a South African holding company with stakes in over 30 industries, including automobiles. His rise to the top of Africa's wealth list can be attributed to the continued global demand for luxury goods, despite economic uncertainties. Rupert inherited his fortune from his father, Anton Rupert, who started in the tobacco business before expanding into luxury brands. Johann Rupert studied economics at the University of Stellenbosch but left in 1984 to join his father's business. Over the years, he has grown the family fortune, diversifying into different sectors and building a global empire. Aliko Dangote's Decline Aliko Dangote, who had held the title of Africa's richest man for years, now ranks second with a net worth of $13.4 billion. Dangote’s wealth has taken a hit due to Nigeria's economic challenges, which have been exacerbated by a series of reforms under President Bola Tinubu. The removal of fuel subsidies, for instance, has led to rising prices, causing strain on businesses operating in Nigeria, including Dangote’s conglomerates. The heavy devaluation of the Nigerian Naira has also negatively impacted Dangote’s wealth. With most of his operations and assets based in Nigeria, the devaluation has significantly reduced the value of his fortune when converted to global currencies. Dangote’s business empire spans cement, sugar, and most recently, oil, with the launch of his new refinery in Lagos last year. Despite these challenges, Dangote, 66, had been named Africa's richest person by Forbes for 13 consecutive years prior to this latest shift by Bloomberg. Africa’s Wealth Landscape Rupert and Dangote are followed by Nicky Oppenheimer, another South African billionaire, with a net worth of $11.3 billion, and Egypt's Nassef Sawiris, worth $9 billion. These shifts underscore the dynamic nature of wealth distribution in Africa, as economic conditions and market fluctuations continue to reshape the continent's billionaire rankings. Johann Rupert, who resides in Cape Town, also owns properties in Geneva and London. He is known for his outspoken views on South African politics and his opposition to the former white minority rule. As Rupert's empire continues to grow, his wealth positions him as a significant figure not just in Africa, but on the global stage. Kenya Aviation Workers Threaten Strike Over Proposed Deal with India’s Adani Group Griffith Sarah Aug 13, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Kenya’s aviation sector faces potential turmoil as the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has announced plans for a strike starting next Monday. The union, representing airport workers, is protesting a proposed deal with India’s Adani Airport Holdings to develop Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), the country’s largest aviation hub. KAWU claims that the agreement, which was unveiled last month, threatens to result in job losses and the introduction of non-Kenyan workers into the workforce. The union has issued a seven-day strike notice, demanding that the government cancel what it has termed the "unlawful intended sale of JKIA to Adani Airport Holdings." The Kenyan government, however, has clarified that the airport is not for sale. It has stated that no final decision has been made regarding the proposed public-private partnership intended to upgrade JKIA. Despite these assurances, KAWU remains firm in its stance, with Secretary General Moss Ndiema stating that the union will only reconsider industrial action if the deal with Adani Airport Holdings is completely abandoned. The proposed strike poses a significant risk to the operations of Kenya Airways, the national carrier, which could face major disruptions if the industrial action goes ahead. Adani Group, the Indian conglomerate involved, has yet to comment on the situation. Business and Industry Thika Cloth Mills Boosts Kenya’s Cotton Industry . The Nigerian team had been detained at Al-Abraq Airport for over 18 hours before the second leg match with the Libyan side. Benin Republic comes into this game after a 2-1 loss to Rwanda. Miss Rwanda Muheto Could Face 1 Year and 8 Months in Prison Prince Jean Oct 31, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Miss Rwanda 2022, Nshuti Muheto Divine, attends her bail hearing at the Kicukiro Primary Court on 31 October 2024, where she faces charges related to driving offences and property damage. Instagram/@igihe On 31 October 2024, Miss Rwanda 2022, Nshuti Muheto Divine, appeared before the Kicukiro Primary Court for a bail hearing regarding charges filed by the prosecution, including driving under the influence, driving without a valid licence, causing property damage, and allegedly fleeing the scene after an accident. Represented by a team of three defence lawyers, Muheto admitted to the charges except for the accusation of fleeing the scene. During her statement, she acknowledged driving while intoxicated, lacking a valid driver’s licence, and causing an accident but denied attempting to escape. The prosecution presented its case, stating that Muheto was drinking at the 'Atelier du Vin' bar until midnight before driving home. Due to her lack of driving experience and high alcohol level, she reportedly collided with an electric pole and a tree. After the incident, witnesses claim she initially left the scene but returned shortly after to retrieve her phone, at which point the police had already arrived. According to the prosecution, she then denied being the driver. The prosecution highlighted that this was not Muheto’s first offence, noting a previous incident on 23 September 2024, after which she was counselled and expressed remorse. The prosecution urged the court to convict her on all three charges. Evidence showed her blood alcohol concentration was 4.00, significantly above the legal limit of 0.8. Defence Statement and Request for Leniency In her defence, Muheto stated, “I admit to driving under the influence, driving without a licence, and causing an accident, but I deny fleeing the scene.” She clarified that after the accident, she only moved aside due to the crowd but remained nearby and awaited the police. One of her lawyers argued that Muheto has shown remorse and cooperated with the authorities. He further stated that she held a provisional driver’s licence and was familiar with road regulations but had failed to obtain a permanent one. He emphasised that the pole and tree she struck were still intact, and if she had intended to flee, she would have left immediately after the accident, given she had access to a vehicle. Prosecution Seeks a Sentence of 1 Year and 8 Months The prosecution requested a cumulative sentence based on each charge: 1. Driving under the influence: 6 months in prison and a fine of RWF 180,000. 2. Driving without a valid licence: 2 months in prison and a fine of RWF 10,000. 3. Fleeing after causing an accident: 1 year in prison and a fine of RWF 30,000. Altogether, the recommended sentence amounts to 1 year and 8 months of imprisonment and a total fine of RWF 220,000. Muheto’s defence lawyer requested leniency, emphasising her remorse and cooperation. He asked the court to consider a monetary penalty in place of imprisonment. In her closing statement, Muheto appealed to the court, saying, “During my time in detention, I have reflected and learned. I ask for forgiveness for my actions and assure the court that this will never happen again.” Legal Context: Concurrent and Consecutive Sentencing Under Rwandan law, concurrent and consecutive sentencing are applied differently based on the nature of the offences. Concurrent sentencing ( mbonezamugambi ) applies when a single act results in multiple offences; in this case, only the longest sentence is applied. Consecutive sentencing (mbonezabyaha) applies when multiple acts result in separate offences, leading to a cumulative sentence. For cumulative sentences, the total sentence cannot exceed twice the maximum term of the most severe offence. For example, if someone faces sentences of 15, 10, and 8 years, the maximum term imposed cannot exceed 30 years (double the highest single offence, which is 15 years).
