The Starlets achieved a significant victory by defeating Ethiopia 3-0 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, securing their place in the final round of the U17 World Cup qualifiers. The match was marked by a commanding performance from the Starlets. Team captain Elizabeth Ochaka opened the scoring with a powerful header just before halftime, igniting the home crowd. The second half saw a quick succession of goals that sealed the win. Velma Awuor's long-range strike in the 57th minute doubled the lead, showcasing her shooting prowess. The victory was cemented in the 70th minute when Lorna Faith, a standout talent from the Talanta Hela program, unleashed a stunning left-footed shot from distance, leaving the Ethiopian goalkeeper with no chance. The Rising Starlets' path to the final round was not without challenges. In the first leg of the qualifier in Addis Ababa, the team managed a goalless draw, setting the stage for a decisive home match. The Starlets' win was built on solid teamwork and strategic play. Despite a cautious start with limited clear scoring opportunities, the team remained persistent. Valerie Nekesa made a notable attempt in the 22nd minute, dribbling past defenders but missing the target. Later, Awuor's indecision in the box in the 39th minute nearly cost them a goal, but Ochaka's timely header just before the break put Kenya ahead. In the second half, the Starlets increased their intensity, and Awuor's brilliant strike from outside the box effectively put the game out of reach for Ethiopia. Faith's goal further showcased the team's talent and determination. The Rising Starlets managed the remainder of the game with confidence, maintaining their lead and securing a memorable victory. Kenya now faces Burundi in the final qualification round, with hopes high for a historic World Cup appearance. Nigerian officers face court martial over drone strike that killed 85 locals Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Mbeki edmond May 4, 2024 The Nigerian military loading a drone ready for launching against militants Nigeria’s military has ordered two officers to face court martial proceedings over a drone strike that killed at least 85 civilians. The incident occurred on December 3 and was one of the deadliest attacks on civilians. The Nigerian military has been increasingly relying on aerial assaults to combat Islamic militants in the northeast and armed kidnapping gangs in the northwest. The investigation revealed that the strike in a village in northern Kaduna state should never have happened. The military has apologized for mistaking a religious gathering of villagers for armed criminal gangs. However, this incident is part of a series of aerial assaults that have resulted in civilian casualties. Last month, an air strike in northwestern Zamfara state killed at least 33 people during a military operation targeting armed kidnap gangs and their hideouts. • Uganda Holds Dominance in Cecafa Zone as per Latest FIFA Rankings

Uganda Holds Dominance in Cecafa Zone as per Latest FIFA Rankings Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Apr 5, 2024 In a noteworthy development in African football, Uganda continues to lead the pack in the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) Zone according to the recent FIFA rankings unveiled this Thursday. With a stable position at 92nd globally, Uganda boasts 124.15 points, securing its 19th place in the African continent's football hierarchy. Despite facing a challenging phase with a 4-0 loss to Comoros and a 2-2 stalemate against Ghana in friendly matches held in Marrakech, Morocco, last month, Uganda's football team has managed to maintain its standing. These matches, critical for assessing team dynamics and strategies, did not impact Uganda's prestigious position in the Cecafa Zone or its global ranking. Argentina continues to lead the global rankings with a commanding 1,858 points, showcasing the country's football excellence. On the African front, Morocco, despite a slight drop, remains the highest-ranked team on the continent, now standing at 13th with 1,661.42 points. In the Cecafa Zone, following Uganda closely is Kenya, which has seen a remarkable rise in the FIFA rankings. Climbing four spots to secure the 107th position globally, Kenya now has 1,191.24 points. This ascent is attributed to the Harambee Starlets' impressive performance in the Four-Nation tournament in Malawi, where they clinched victories against Malawi and Zimbabwe. Tanzania and Sudan are also key players in the Cecafa Zone, holding their ground in the FIFA rankings at 119th and 127th places, respectively. These rankings reflect the competitive spirit and the evolving football landscape in the East and Central African region. The Cecafa Zone, a vibrant football community, comprises 12 member countries: Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia, Eritrea, and the Caf Associate member Zanzibar. This region is known for its passionate embrace of football, fostering talent that competes on both continental and global stages. As the football community digests these rankings, the focus remains on how teams from the Cecafa Zone will leverage this benchmark to enhance their performance in upcoming international engagements. The rankings not only reflect the current state of football prowess in the region but also set the stage for future aspirations and achievements in the beautiful game . • Brink of War: Tshisekedi's Ultimatum to Kagame Amidst Eastern DRC Turmoil

Brink of War: Tshisekedi's Ultimatum to Kagame Amidst Eastern DRC Turmoil Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Michelle Hayes Jan 9, 2024 Rising Stakes in Great Lakes: The Role of SADC and Modern Warfare Dynamics in the DRC-Rwanda Escalation The escalating tension between Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame has led to a precarious situation in the region, with Tshisekedi's recent threats to declare war on Rwanda if re-elected. This development is a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, particularly in the context of the long-standing issues in the eastern DRC, including the activities of more than 100 armed groups such as M23 and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). The situation has been further complicated by Tshisekedi's accusatory stance towards Rwanda for allegedly backing M23 rebels, a claim that Rwanda has consistently denied. Tshisekedi's declaration raises questions about the potential use of modern military equipment, including war drones like the CH-4 and the Sukhoi-25, signaling a possible shift towards a more technologically advanced form of warfare in the region. This shift would represent a significant escalation from the conventional forms of conflict that have characterized the region's instability. Congolese Military's CH-4 Drone Assault Targets M23 Rebel Strongholds The involvement of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in the DRC adds another layer to the situation. The SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) was deployed to support the DRC government in restoring peace and security in the eastern DRC. This deployment, which includes forces from Malawi, South Africa, and Tanzania, along with elements of the DRC Armed Forces, is aimed at combating the armed groups operating in the region. The SADC's involvement underlines the regional implications of the conflict and highlights the commitment of SADC Member States to support the DRC in achieving lasting peace and stability. If Tshisekedi were to follow through with his declaration of war against Rwanda, it could potentially lead to a full-scale regional conflict. Such a development could destabilize East Africa and may involve various regional players, including SADC forces. The introduction of advanced military technology, such as drones and fighter aircraft, could lead to increased destruction and a higher number of casualties. Moreover, it would pose significant challenges to peacekeeping and conflict resolution efforts in the region. The situation remains highly fluid and unpredictable, with the potential for far-reaching consequences not only for the DRC and Rwanda but for the entire Great Lakes region. The international community, including Western nations and regional organizations, will need to play a critical role in mediating the conflict and preventing a further escalation of hostilities. • Shadows in the Sanctuary: Unveiling TB Joshua's Legacy of Abuse

Shadows in the Sanctuary: Unveiling TB Joshua's Legacy of Abuse Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Alison Marsh Jan 9, 2024 TB Joshua is one of several so-called faith healers in Nigeria claiming an ability to cure people of AIDSPIUS UTOMI EKPEI (AFP/File) A recent investigation by the BBC, in collaboration with the international media platform Open Democracy, has uncovered alarming details of abuse and exploitation within the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), led by the late Nigerian preacher TB Joshua. The findings of this two-year investigation have been profoundly disturbing, revealing a pattern of abuse that spanned almost two decades. Victims, including several British nationals, have come forward with harrowing accounts of physical violence, torture, sexual assault, and forced abortions perpetrated by TB Joshua. These testimonies detail a regime of manipulation and terror within a secretive compound in Lagos, Nigeria. One of the victims, identified as Rae, shared her experience of being sexually assaulted by Joshua and subjected to a prolonged period of solitary confinement. She recounted multiple suicide attempts during her time in the compound. Another victim, Jessica Kaimu from Namibia, also alleged repeated rape and forced abortions at the hands of TB Joshua. These women, along with others, describe a harrowing environment where they were manipulated into silence and submission, often under the guise of religious salvation. The BBC's investigation also sheds light on the alleged staging of miraculous healings, which were a central aspect of Joshua's ministry and televised to millions globally. Former members of the church's "miracle department" revealed that they were instructed to exaggerate their ailments and subsequent healings for the camera, contributing to the myth of Joshua's divine powers. Additionally, the investigation touches on the tragic event of a building collapse at the church compound, which further highlights the extent of control and cover-up tactics employed by Joshua and his organization. Survivors described how the church attempted to shield the reality of this disaster from the public eye. The revelations from this investigation have sparked a reevaluation of TB Joshua's legacy, who was once hailed as a highly influential religious leader in Africa. His church attracted followers worldwide, including political leaders and celebrities, and was known for its global outreach through television and social media. These revelations have left many questioning the accountability mechanisms within religious organizations, particularly those with charismatic leaders like TB Joshua, whose influence often extends beyond traditional checks and balances. • South African Rand Dips Amid Rising Middle East Tensions

South African Rand Dips Amid Rising Middle East Tensions Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Apr 16, 2024 Andre Cilliers, a currency strategist at TreasuryONE The South African Rand experienced a decline against the U.S. dollar, closing weaker as geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East influenced global market behaviors. The rand was marked at 19.0200 to the dollar, down by 0.75% from its last close, at 1516 GMT yesterday. The weakening of the rand comes amidst a backdrop of increasing volatility following Iran's significant military actions over the weekend. Iran reportedly launched over 300 drones and missiles targeting Israel, a response to an alleged Israeli airstrike on Tehran's consulate in Damascus earlier this month. Such escalations have heightened demand for the U.S. dollar, considered a safe-haven currency during geopolitical crises. Additionally, the dollar's strength was further supported by positive economic data from the U.S., with retail sales showing an uptick in March. The dollar index, which measures the U.S. currency against a basket of six major currencies, rose by 0.18%. Andre Cilliers, a currency strategist at TreasuryONE, highlighted the importance of the situation in the Middle East. "Developments in the Middle East over the next few days are likely to remain the main focus and driver for currency moves and keep the dollar on the front foot," he noted. Investors in South Africa are also bracing for upcoming economic data releases, with the March inflation figures and February retail sales data expected later this week. These indicators will provide further insights into the economic trajectory of the nation amidst global and domestic challenges. • A former gangster and bank robber becomes South Africa’s New Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie

A former gangster and bank robber becomes South Africa’s New Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ayize claire Jul 7, 2024 South Africa's Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Gayton Mchenzie In an unexpected twist of fate, former gangster and bank robber Gayton McKenzie has risen to become South Africa's Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture. President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed McKenzie, the leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), to this portfolio in the newly formed multi-party government after the ANC lost its parliamentary majority in the 29 May election. McKenzie, now 50, celebrated his appointment with a humorous tweet, sharing a photo of himself putting on football boots and writing, "Thank you for all the well-wishing messages. I will reply shortly; I’m just busy getting ready. I have work to do 🥅 ⚽️." During his swearing-in ceremony, McKenzie, known for his charisma , had the audience, including President Ramaphosa, laughing when he quipped, "The last time a judge asked me to sit, he made me sit for 10 years." A Story of Redemption McKenzie's journey from crime to politics is remarkable. He robbed his first bank before turning 16, becoming a notorious gangster. After serving seven years in prison, he vowed to turn his life around. "I might have had 12 rand ($0.65) in my pocket, but I had billion rand in my mind," he said in a 2013 interview with SABC. Transitioning from crime to motivation, McKenzie became a highly paid motivational speaker, author, and businessman. He ventured into various businesses, including mining in Zimbabwe and nightclubs in South Africa, with Kenny Kunene, his former cellmate. Political Ascent In 2013, McKenzie launched the Patriotic Alliance (PA) with Kunene as his deputy. The PA gained 2% of the national vote in the recent election and fared better in the Western Cape, securing 8%. The party's support mainly comes from the coloured community, which makes up about 8% of South Africa's population. "For the first time, coloured people are going to parliament through the Patriotic Alliance. We are the only party that takes all races to parliament," McKenzie said after the election results were announced. Controversial Campaigns McKenzie's bravado style and direct approach resonate with his supporters. His campaign against undocumented migrants, under the slogan "Abahambe" ("Let them go"), drew both support and criticism, with some denouncing it as xenophobic. However, McKenzie remained steadfast, arguing that South Africa needed strong leadership to tackle crime and immigration issues. Despite not securing the police ministry, McKenzie was content with his sports portfolio. "Sport can be used to change children's lives. A child in sport is a child out of court," he said. Vision for Sports McKenzie has ambitious plans for his ministry, including promoting car spinning as a major sport in South Africa. Car spinning, which involves driving in circles and performing stunts, has a stigma due to its dangerous and unregulated nature. McKenzie aims to create safe environments for this sport to thrive, keeping young people away from gangsterism and drugs. Ongoing Challenges McKenzie's appointment comes amid an investigation into his tenure as mayor of Central Karoo, where he was accused of failing to account for funds raised at a 2022 gala dinner. Despite this, McKenzie remains confident, stating, "The truth shall come out. I have nothing to hide." President Ramaphosa's decision to include McKenzie in his cabinet is politically risky, but it underscores McKenzie's transformative journey and his commitment to using sports as a tool for social change. As South Africa watches closely, McKenzie’s next steps in his new role will undoubtedly be pivotal. Over 50,000 Displaced in Ethiopia Amid Armed Clashes, UN Reports Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ayize claire Apr 24, 2024 Women militarily dressed in previous Ethiopia's Tigray conflict. KOBO/SEKOTA, April 25 — Armed clashes in the northern rural areas of Ethiopia have led to the displacement of over 50,000 people since April 13, local authorities and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported this Monday. Escalating Violence in Northern Ethiopia The recent surge in violence began on April 13, with significant confrontations reported in Alamata, a town in the north of Ethiopia. The conflict caused many, including an undetermined number of casualties, to flee to the neighboring towns of Kobo and Sekota. According to a situation report from UN OCHA, the majority of those displaced are vulnerable groups, including women, children, and the elderly, who are now seeking refuge and basic necessities to survive. Humanitarian Crisis in Amhara Region Kobo and Sekota, both situated in the Amhara region, have become centers for those escaping the violence. The UN OCHA highlights a critical shortage of essential services as the towns struggle to cope with the influx. "The humanitarian situation is dire. Thousands need broad humanitarian support, particularly food and health services, which are currently inadequate due to the limited resources available," the report detailed. Response to the Crisis Efforts are underway by government bodies and humanitarian partners to address the immediate needs of the displaced. Food distribution and health services are being prioritized, but the scope of the crisis calls for an urgent increase in aid and international attention. Further Developments This displacement comes in the backdrop of continued unrest in Ethiopia, which saw at least 15 civilians killed in an airstrike just days before the recent clashes.
