Africa Local News Uganda Suicide Note left by Lt. Ariho’s Final Moments Mbeki edmond Jan 3, 2025 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link The crime scene of Lt Ariho's suicide in Nakirebe, Mpigi district The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is mourning the death of Lt. Amon Ariho, who tragically took his own life, leaving behind a heartfelt note exposing alleged corruption within the military. The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, expressed deep sadness over the incident, saying: “I am personally hurt by the suicide of our young officer, Lt. Ariho. He died because of the corruption Mzee (President Museveni) and I have been talking about for a long time now. His blood will be avenged, and the thieves will pay.” What Happened? Lt. Ariho, from the UPDF Engineers Brigade, was found dead at a football field in Nakirebe, near Wakiso and Mpigi districts. Witnesses reported that he parked his black car (UBJ 493Q), dispersed players on the field, and used an SMG rifle to end his life. Before his death, Lt. Ariho left a detailed letter addressed to the UPDF leadership. He blamed corruption, particularly targeting a superior, Maj. Ogwang, for his struggles. Lt. Ariho’s Suicide Note In his note, Lt. Ariho praised the CDF’s leadership but highlighted grievances, including blocked projects, unpaid debts, and mistreatment of engineers. Below is part of his note: UPDF FAMILY Dear CDF, I want to thank you for your good leadership, and may God continue blessing you. I hope this message finds you well. Kindly visit the Engineers Brigade and review some issues. I joined the Army in 2013, completed basic training, and later undertook cadet training after a few years. I have been serving as a Lieutenant. As I leave, these are the issues I would like to discuss: Eng. Ogwang is the cause of my demise. After being deployed to the Engineers Brigade, he dismissed every engineer who was working within the Central region, even without allowing them to serve under him for a single day. Please track the record of works completed before Maj. Ogwang took over. For instance, visit Mpigi District and Butambala. Specifically, at Gombe Hospital in Butambala, Maj. Ogwang found a block project already constructed, worth 100 million UGX. He accused us of being thieves, claiming we made blocks for sale. This is untrue; the previous leader was strategic and planned for the future. Maj. Ogwang did not purchase any blocks in Gomba District because he found a soft landing. However, he failed to settle the debts he inherited, and these are now weighing heavily on us. Dear CDF, harmful propaganda and selfish interests can lead to unfair treatment of good people while promoting the wrong elements. I urge you to visit the ground and make proper changes. I, Lt. Amon Ariho (RO/13999), am leaving this world. I kindly request that my body be taken home to Rukiga District, Kamwezi, Kibanda, Katungu. Dear CDF, I humbly request that you take good care of the children I leave behind, as their father is no longer alive. Source: Chimpreports Related Posts Suicide Note left by Lt. Africa Local News Kenya President Museveni Crowned Luo Elder: A Celebration of Unity and Culture in East Africa Mbeki edmond Jan 2, 2025 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link President Museveni crowned Luo elder alongside Kenya’s William Ruto President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was crowned a Luo elder during the Piny Luo Festival in Siaya County, Kenya. The event, held at Got Ramogi Hill, also crowned Kenya’s President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as elders. The three leaders received traditional items symbolizing leadership and protection, like a ruler’s seat, a crown, a shield, a spear, and an elder’s robe. After the ceremony, they toured important Luo heritage sites, including the Jaramogi Oginga Mausoleum and four traditional huts representing the Luo clans. President Museveni expressed his gratitude for the honor and spoke about unity among East Africans, encouraging the East African Federation for regional prosperity. Museveni highlighted Africa’s history of colonization and the importance of integration, prosperity, and security. He praised past and present leaders for supporting East African unity and presented plaques honoring leaders who once envisioned a united East Africa. Museveni also backed Raila Odinga’s bid for African Union Chairmanship, urging East African leaders to support the cause. President Ruto thanked Museveni for attending and praised his commitment to East African unity. He emphasized breaking down artificial borders to allow the free movement of goods and people for regional growth. He also announced the opening of the Lamogi campus, a technical college built for over Ksh 400 million, to symbolize unity. Raila Odinga criticized colonial borders for slowing East Africa’s prosperity and called for boosting trade within Africa. Siaya Governor James Orengo supported the establishment of the East African Federation with open borders between Kenya and Uganda. The festival, themed “Celebrating the Roots of Our Culture and Heritage,” showcased Luo unity and traditions. It brought together Luo communities from Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and beyond. Other highlights included traditional dances, prayers, and honoring Luo ancestors. Later, Museveni and Ruto inaugurated the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya County, hosting a football match between Kenya’s Gor Mahia and Uganda’s Kitara FC. Gor Mahia won 9-8 on penalties. Museveni urged East Africans to focus on wealth creation through agriculture, ICT, services, and manufacturing. The new stadium, a modern facility with a 20,000-seat capacity, promises to boost sports in Western Kenya. Africa War in DRC DR.Congo African Court Set to Begin Trial Against Rwanda Over Human Rights Abuses in DRC Mbeki edmond Jan 1, 2025 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, based in Arusha, Tanzania, has confirmed that it will begin the trial against Rwanda on February 12, 2025. This trial follows a complaint filed by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in September 2023, accusing Rwanda of committing severe human rights abuses in the eastern part of the DRC. The news about this trial was announced at the 28th meeting of the Council of Ministers in Mbuji-Mayi. During this meeting, the Minister of State for Justice, Constant Mutamba, provided a detailed report, emphasizing that this legal action marks a significant step in the DRC's pursuit of justice and human rights. It is seen as a boost to the country's standing in the international community. Other international courts are also taking action against Rwanda. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has reopened its investigation into Rwanda's crimes in Congo, and the East African Community (EAC) Court of Justice is pursuing its own legal case against Rwanda for violating the organization's treaty. In response to Rwanda's aggression in eastern Congo, the Congolese government has implemented a strategy focused on four key areas: strengthening the military to defend the country’s borders, using diplomacy to gain international support and expose the aggression, raising awareness to fight misinformation, and using the judicial system to hold those responsible accountable and seek reparations. Africa War in DRC DR.Congo FARDC determined to Hunt for Rwandan Terrorists and other rebels Mbeki edmond Dec 31, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) training at the Mubambiro camp in North Kivu province During the 28th meeting of the Council of Ministers held last Friday, December 27, in Kinshasa, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defense and Veterans, Guy Kabombo Mudiamvita, reiterated the determination of the Armed Forces (FARDC) to restore peace and security on all operational fronts in the DRC. According to him, the FARDC have strengthened security measures around the territories of Djugu, Irumu and Mahagi in Ituri, which are the epicenters of violence by armed groups, in order to counter all actions against the population during this festive period. According to the minutes of this government meeting, this initiative led to a "significant drop in acts of violence by these groups." On the other side of Lubero, in North Kivu, the loyalist army regained the initiative and stopped "suddenly" the enemy's advance towards the centre and other localities before launching counter-offensives, benefiting from "excellent coordination of direct fire support". "This counter-offensive resulted in the neutralization of enemy drone operators and the destruction of their six kamikaze drones as well as the reconquest of the localities of Kasiki, Luhanga, Ndoluma and Mabasa, including several losses of human life recorded on the side of the aggressors. During these clashes, it was noted that the Rwandan aggressors and their allies use vulnerable civilian populations, particularly children, as human shields, in flagrant violation of human rights and international humanitarian law," reports the minutes of this meeting. The same source reports that on December 24, 2024, in Nyiragongo territory, the FARDC "heroically" resisted attacks aimed at breaking through their defensive lines and advancing towards the city of Goma. "These attacks were carried out by Rwandan aggressors, supported by artillery from Rwandan territory. Finally, in the territories of Walikale and Rutshuru, the FARDC also carried out actions against the Rwandan aggressors, inflicting significant losses on them and disrupting their systems," adds the report of the council of ministers. In the western part of the country, FARDC actions under Operation Ngemba remain focused on the Kongo Central-Kinshasa-Grand Bandundu triangle, aimed at tracking down Mobondo militiamen who have settled in the Popokabaka territory. Furthermore, in Grand Katanga, they have continued their operations against the Bakata-Katanga under the USALAMA operations. The FARDC was instructed to carry out "decisive" actions against the Twirwaneho armed group from Makanika, which approached the Minembwe airfield intending to control it and disrupt traffic. Africa Geopolitics DR.Congo Kabila and Katumbi: Recycling Failures and Betraying Congo's Future Mbeki edmond Dec 26, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Moise Katumbi and Joseph Kabila in Ethiopia on December 26, 2024 Some comebacks inspire hope, others spark questions, and a few, unfortunately, bring bitter regret. Joseph Kabila, a key and controversial figure in Congo’s history, seems to be treading a path of confusion rather than redemption. Isn’t this the essence of Congolese politics—a stage where the same actors refuse to step aside, creating fleeting alliances and betrayals behind the scenes? Joseph Kabila and Moïse Katumbi have joined forces to oppose President Félix Tshisekedi’s plan to change the Constitution. They claim it threatens democracy and could result in a president staying in power for life. The two leaders met in Addis Ababa and made a statement against the proposal. This follows Tshisekedi’s December 24 speech in Kananga, where he said the 2005 Constitution needs to be updated to meet the country’s current needs. He announced plans to form a group of experts to review it, saying the changes reflect the people's wishes. “If you want the Constitution to change, we will change it, and no one can stop us,” Tshisekedi told a cheering crowd. However, the meeting of Kabila and Katumbi came with a condition: Kabila needed genuine introspection, a break from the practices and people that tarnished his legacy. Unfortunately, six years after stepping down, Kabila remains trapped in the same patterns, surrounded by the same figures. Worse, he’s now extending his hand to Moïse Katumbi—a former ally turned opponent, whose actions led to Kabila’s fall and the collapse of his alliance with Tshisekedi. Katumbi, known for his opportunistic maneuvers, has been an executioner, rival, and now, possibly, a partner. This alliance of convenience is a bizarre spectacle. At a time when Congo had its first peaceful transfer of power, Kabila and Tshisekedi’s unexpected alliance brought hope for healing and reconciliation. Yet Katumbi, driven by his interests, dismantled this fragile unity, supported by external influences like former U.S. ambassador Mike Hammer. Eventually, Katumbi usurped Kabila’s role while pursuing his ambition to lead the country. Now, Kabila and Katumbi present a new partnership, abandoning principles for political survival. This move highlights the irony of Congo’s politics, where yesterday’s enemy becomes today’s ally. Kabila’s choice to engage in this opportunistic game erases the chance to become a figure of renewal. Instead, he perpetuates the cycle he once criticized. The issue isn’t just Kabila; it’s a systemic problem in Congolese politics. Leaders prioritize personal gains over ideas, recycling alliances without genuine ambition for progress. From Mobutu to Tshisekedi, failures pile up, and hope fades. Nothing truly changes. What can the Congolese people hope for? Perhaps they demand a new political approach—one that abandons recycled figures and outdated practices. Kabila could have led this transformation, but he seems stuck replaying the same script. Meanwhile, Congo waits for a new chapter—a melody of justice and hope to replace the discord of the past. Africa War in DRC DR.Congo M23 rebels backed by Rwanda commit killings, rapes, and exploit minerals in DRC Mbeki edmond Dec 26, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link M23 rebels are using shocking methods to terrorize the people of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). On April 4, 2024, they attacked the town of Rubaya and used a large wooden mortar and pestle to kill six children in a marketplace brutally. Isabel, a 32-year-old woman, witnessed this horrific act before fleeing. She and a friend were later captured and raped, while another friend was executed. This is just one of many testimonies of M23’s atrocities, which include mass killings, rapes, and abductions. Women have been raped in front of their children, and others attacked in public during daylight. The DRC has long been known for high levels of sexual violence, but the situation has worsened significantly. M23 rebels are heavily armed and backed by Rwanda, a country viewed as an important ally by Western nations like the UK and the US. A senior diplomat described Rwanda’s strategy: “Rwanda has wooed the West, particularly the UK. They’re playing a dual narrative: reliable partner on the one hand while facilitating conflict in the Congo.” M23’s presence is expanding in the DRC, with reports suggesting they may aim to annex a large part of eastern Congo. The group has pushed over 80 kilometers into the DRC, controlling territory half the size of Rwanda. Many women in these areas are at risk of rape, and those who speak out often face threats. Data shows a record number of sexual violence cases, but the real numbers are likely higher as many survivors remain silent. Rwanda’s involvement goes beyond just supporting M23. The country profits from the DRC’s vast mineral resources, including coltan, a key material for electronic devices and green energy. A UN source revealed that minerals mined under M23 control are smuggled into Rwanda and sold as conflict-free. Critics argue that international support and deals with Rwanda indirectly fuel the conflict. Despite mounting evidence of atrocities, the international community has failed to take strong action against Rwanda. UN experts have called for sanctions, but Western countries have hesitated, citing Rwanda’s strategic importance and its past genocide in 1994 as reasons for caution. Some believe this reluctance enables Rwanda to continue its involvement in the DRC’s violence. Conditions in refugee camps near Goma are also dire. Women and children face constant threats of violence and rape. Many are forced to engage in survival sex to get food or shelter. A local charity reported a sharp increase in sexual violence cases, while Goma’s brothels, many involving children, have doubled in number over the past year. Lt. Col. Guillaume Ndjike of the Congolese army expressed frustration over the lack of international action: “The mission is to put the aggressor and his allies out of our national territory.” The DRC is fighting not just for its land but for the safety and dignity of its people, while the world, as one survivor said, “watches and does nothing.” Source: The Guardian. Africa War in DRC DR.Congo Reports say M23 is stealing people's property in Lubero Mbeki edmond Dec 23, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link The Congolese Army, FARDC, has accused the M23-RDF rebels of stealing food and animals from the people in Alimbongo, a village in Lubero, North Kivu, Eastern DRC. On Monday, December 23, 2024, the FARDC denied rumors that they had taken anything from the villagers. They stated that Alimbongo is already under M23 control, backed by the Rwandan army (RDF). Lieutenant Colonel Mak Hazukay, the army spokesperson, said, "FARDC is not in Alimbongo. It is the attackers who are taking things from farms left behind by peaceful citizens." For days, messages on social media have reported the theft of crops and livestock in Alimbongo. To clarify, Alimbongo, part of the Bamate chiefdom, has been controlled by M23-RDF rebels since the evening of December 16, 2024. Africa War in DRC Rwanda we have no choice but to recover our land by force says Felix Tshisekedi Mbeki edmond Dec 23, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link At the African Union City in Kinshasa, President Félix Tshisekedi gave a strong speech on Saturday to national deputies, senators, and some leaders of the Sacred Union of the Nation Groups. As the leader of this group, Tshisekedi asked his supporters to focus on the country's needs. "We are responsible for leading this country. Congo will only be saved by its own people. No one else will care for it more than we do. Without your support, we cannot achieve our goals for the people. We need a new way of thinking and a fresh approach because transforming this country is possible," he said. President Tshisekedi also spoke about the ongoing security issues in the east of the country. He said the DRC is making progress with the Luanda process. He made it clear that Kinshasa rejects any direct talks with the M23 group, calling them terrorists. "We must do everything to stop the aggression. I will take the necessary steps to regain the areas we have lost. If we cannot achieve this through talks led by Angola, we will have to take them back by force," Tshisekedi stated.
