The remarks were made in a video shared on Instagram by social media personality Tunde Ednut , where Burna Boy described Fela as “the king” and said no other musician surpasses him. The comments come amid ongoing online discussions in Nigeria over comparisons between contemporary Afrobeat stars and Fela Kuti . The debate intensified after fans compared singer Wizkid to Fela, a claim strongly rejected by Fela’s youngest son, Seun Kuti , who argued that such comparisons diminish his father’s historical and political impact. Fela Kuti, who died in 1997, is widely credited with founding Afrobeat, blending African rhythms with jazz, funk, and politically charged lyrics. His work continues to influence many of today’s leading Afrobeat artists. The artist made the announcement following the release of his latest track, “ Kristu Yezu” , explaining that the decision is aimed at strengthening his independence as a musician while giving fans an opportunity to directly support his work. Under the new release model, listeners who want early access to Zeo Trap ’s music will be required to pay a fee before the songs are made public. The rapper said the current price for early access is set at 300 Rwandan francs, describing it as affordable for fans who value local music. Zeo Trap confirmed that his songs are being distributed through a digital music platform designed for direct sales and controlled releases. He added that all future music will follow the same pattern, debuting on the website before appearing on YouTube and other mainstream streaming services. While acknowledging that many listeners are accustomed to free and immediate releases, Zeo Trap said some fans have already embraced the idea of paying for early access as a way of supporting artists directly. Similar strategies are increasingly being adopted by musicians internationally to maintain control over their work and improve revenue returns. Industry observers note that direct-to-consumer music distribution allows artists to better manage their content, build closer relationships with their audiences, and earn higher returns compared to traditional streaming platforms, where revenues are often shared with intermediaries. - Why Abba Yusuf’s APC Switch Is Shaking Kano Politics
Abba Yusuf’s defection from NNPP to APC is reshaping Kano’s alliances and 2027 calculations, drawing sharp reactions from opposition parties. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Why Abba Yusuf’s APC Switch Is Shaking Kano Politics Abba Yusuf’s defection from NNPP to APC is reshaping Kano’s alliances and 2027 calculations, drawing sharp reactions from opposition parties. Published: January 26, 2026 at 12:25:55 PM Modified: January 26, 2026 at 12:37:08 PM Written By | Neema Asha Mwakalinga Travel & Culture Expert Neema Asha Mwakalinga Kano’s political equation is under fresh strain after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf moved from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), triggering immediate pushback from opposition parties and an angry response from his former platform. The development, which the APC has framed as a major gain ahead of 2027, is being interpreted by rivals as elite realignment that may not translate into votes as Reported by The PUNCH . A defection with unusually high political weight Yusuf is not just any governor in Nigeria’s shifting party landscape. Kano is one of the country’s most politically consequential states, and his victory under the NNPP banner in 2023 was closely tied to the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement led by former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. That backdrop is why the NNPP described Yusuf’s exit as a betrayal of the Kano electorate and a direct blow to a political structure that mobilised voters for him. Beyond Yusuf’s personal move, the scale of accompanying defections is central to why the moment is being treated as disruptive. According to statements cited in the report, Yusuf is expected to formalise his APC registration alongside dozens of elected officials across state and federal legislatures and Kano’s local government leadership an organisational shift that can quickly change campaign machinery, patronage networks, and grassroots coordination. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Labour Party (LP) have argued that defections by political office holders should not be confused with voter alignment. Their public line is that electoral strength is ultimately determined at the ballot box, and that governors who switch platforms midstream do not automatically “move” the electorate with them. This argument mirrors a wider national debate about whether the growing trend of cross-party defections reflects genuine ideological convergence or strategic repositioning ahead of 2027. APC calls it validation; critics see a deeper 2027 test APC officials, including party spokesmen quoted in the report, describe Yusuf’s return as a “homecoming” and a sign the party’s agenda is gaining broader acceptance. Opponents counter that the ruling party’s expanding ranks raise questions about competitive balance, especially amid recurring public concerns about whether Nigeria is drifting toward one-party dominance an allegation the presidency and APC leaders have repeatedly denied in other public statements. For broader context on that national argument: The Kwankwasiyya factor: what this could stress-test Even for analysts who expect party switching to continue nationwide, Kano is a special case because of how strongly political identity and mobilisation have been shaped by the Kwankwasiyya bloc. If Yusuf’s move weakens the NNPP’s structure in the state, APC could gain organisational advantage. If, however, the movement’s grassroots loyalty holds independently of Yusuf’s position, the defection could become a test of whether Kano voters follow platforms, personalities, or entrenched political networks. A deeper look at the fault lines this creates in Kano’s power structure is also discussed here . What to watch next (without guessing outcomes) Formal registration and attendance: whether national APC figures publicly anchor the “homecoming” narrative in Kano. NNPP’s response strategy: whether the party rallies around Kwankwasiyya structures to show it retains voter loyalty. Opposition coordination: whether PDP/ADC/LP translate rhetorical pushback into practical alliances on the ground. 2027 calculations: whether this becomes a template for further high-profile switches or a cautionary tale if voters punish perceived opportunism. source: The PUNCH report ADVERTISEMENT Nigeria Gov Services Nigeria Gov Services Africa Africa Nigeria Nigeria Keep Reading Political Scandals Why Abba Yusuf’s APC Switch Is Shaking Kano Politics Opposition rejects “earthquake” narrative as NNPP cites betrayal and APC calls it a homecoming . Uganda’s army chief denies soldiers assaulted Bobi Wine’s wife during a home raid as she describes injuries and the opposition cites post-election abuses. Elections Muhoozi denies soldiers assaulted Bobi Wine’s wife in raid Uganda’s army chief denies soldiers assaulted Bobi Wine’s wife during a home raid as she describes injuries and the opposition cites post-election abuses. Published: January 26, 2026 at 11:51:48 AM Modified: January 26, 2026 at 12:10:13 PM Written By | The Editorial Staff The Editorial Staff Uganda’s military chief, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has denied allegations that soldiers assaulted Barbara Kyagulanyi, the wife of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wineduring a raid at the couple’s home. The denial follows claims by Wine and his wife that armed men in military attire surrounded and entered the residence while seeking Wine, who says he is in hiding after the disputed 15 January election reports by AP news . Wine alleged on Saturday that his wife was held at gunpoint by military officers and assaulted, and that documents and electronic devices were taken from their home. He also said the residence remained under military surveillance afterward. Speaking from hospital, Barbara Kyagulanyi said officers demanded to know her husband’s whereabouts and assaulted her when she refused to cooperate. On Monday, Kainerugaba posted on X that his forces were not responsible for assaulting her. In the same post, he said soldiers were searching for Wine, not his wife. The statements have drawn criticism because they come amid heightened political tensions following the election in which President Yoweri Museveni Kainerugaba’s father was declared the winner in a landslide. Wine has rejected the results, alleging fraud. What Barbara Kyagulanyi says happened From her hospital bed, Barbara Kyagulanyi described an overnight incident involving dozens of men, some wearing military uniforms, who forced their way into the home. She said she was harassed and assaulted during questioning about Wine’s location, and that she suffered injuries to her face and mouth. She also alleged she was partially undressed during the ordeal and later lost consciousness. Wine said his wife was taken to hospital with physical injuries and psychological trauma. He added that the family home remained surrounded by security personnel after the raid. Denial amid wider post-election threats Kainerugaba’s denial comes in a period of sharp, public confrontation between the military leadership and the opposition. Since Museveni was declared the winner of the 15 January vote, Kainerugaba has repeatedly demanded Wine’s surrender and has issued threats against him, according to Wine and multiple media reports. Wine said on Monday that Kainerugaba was still searching for him and “issuing threats” to harm him. He also thanked supporters who, he said, have helped keep him safe. The Associated Press has separately reported that Wine’s lawyer has appealed for international pressure to secure guarantees for Wine’s safety, citing escalating rhetoric and intimidation. Allegations of crackdown on opposition supporters Beyond the raid allegations, the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) says its supporters have been targeted since the election. In recent public remarks and social media posts, Kainerugaba has claimed security forces killed dozens of opposition supporters and detained thousands more assertions that have intensified scrutiny of security-force conduct. Uganda’s legal community has also weighed in. The Uganda Law Society condemned what it described as a continuing pattern of detentions, torture and enforced disappearances involving opposition leaders and supporters, warning that national security claims should not be used to justify violence or unlawful treatment. Meanwhile, a close Wine ally, lawmaker Muwanga Kivumbi, was arrested last week over alleged election-related violencen an allegation the party denies. Uganda has not seen a peaceful transfer of presidential power since independence. Museveni first took office in 1986 and, if he serves a full new term, would remain in power through 2031. The current standoff underscores persistent concerns among rights advocates about political pluralism, election integrity, and the role of security agencies in partisan disputes. - Why Othaya church incident is a political flashpoint in Kenya
Tear gas disrupted a church service attended by Rigathi Gachagua in Othaya, turning a security incident into a major political confrontation. Politics Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua Why Othaya church incident is a political flashpoint in Kenya Tear gas disrupted a church service attended by Rigathi Gachagua in Othaya, turning a security incident into a major political confrontation. Published: January 26, 2026 at 11:01:20 AM Modified: January 26, 2026 at 11:21:30 AM Written By | Neema Asha Mwakalinga Travel & Culture Expert Neema Asha Mwakalinga A tear-gas incident that disrupted a Sunday church service attended by former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua in Othaya, Nyeri County, has quickly become more than a security story fueling a public confrontation over policing, political power, and the country’s next election cycle as reported by BBC News . What is known so far According to the report, police received information that a tear-gas canister was thrown inside St Peters Anglican Church at about 11:00 local time (08:00 GMT), disrupting the service. Police said an investigation had been launched, that no injuries were reported, and that several vehicles were damaged within the church compound. They also appealed for witnesses. Gachagua, now an opposition figure after his 2024 impeachment, said he was escorted to safety by his security team. He later shared photos of the incident on X and rejected claims circulating online that the disruption was staged. Competing claims, and why they matter Gachagua alleged without providing evidence that the attack involved “rogue police officers” and accused President William Ruto , his former ally, of ordering it. The president has not publicly commented on the allegation in the report. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen condemned the violence and said police must act decisively against those responsible, calling violence in a place of worship unacceptable. This mix serious allegations from a high-profile opposition leader, an active police probe, and a government condemnation has turned the incident into a political test case: not only about what happened in Othaya, but about the credibility and independence of security agencies in a polarized environment. Why this incident becomes a national flashpoint 1) It happened in a church, a politically sensitive space. In Kenya, church events often attract political leaders and large public gatherings. Any violence or disruption in a place of worship can rapidly escalate into a national debate about rights, public order, and accountability. 2) It lands in the middle of a bitter elite fallout. Gachagua and Ruto were elected together in 2022, but the relationship fractured publicly before Gachagua’s impeachment in 2024. That split matters because Gachagua remains influential in the Mount Kenya region meaning a security incident involving him is read politically by supporters and opponents alike. 3) The impeachment backstory raises the stakes. Kenya’s parliament has documented that the Senate vote removed Gachagua from office on five grounds, in a process described as historic. The report notes constitutional implications around eligibility for future office, while Gachagua maintains he can still run as he pursues appeals. That legal-political uncertainty makes any confrontation around him instantly consequential. 4) It pressures the state to demonstrate impartial enforcement. The police investigation now carries heightened public expectations: that findings are credible, that witnesses are protected, and that any suspects regardless of status are handled transparently. The constitutional framework for executive accountability and impeachment is also part of the wider context shaping public scrutiny. What to watch next Police updates on how the tear gas entered the church and who was responsible Any public response from the presidency addressing Gachagua’s allegation Whether the incident triggers additional political mobilization in Nyeri and the wider Mount Kenya region Any legal or parliamentary follow-through linked to the broader political dispute Source: BBC News. The killing, reported to have occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 25, has fueled renewed concern over insecurity in the area as first reported by ACTUALITE.CD . According to accounts cited by local witnesses, armed men wearing military-style fatigues allegedly broke into the home of Madame Chekasana Justine near the chapel of the 8th CEPAC Baraka and shot her at the scene. In its reaction, the Karisimbi youth council condemned what it described as repeated violent incidents and appealed for measures that ensure residents can live safely and retain their property without fear. Council rejects “justifications” circulated after the killing The council also disputed claims circulating about the victim’s identity and behavior, saying some individuals linked to AFC/M23 were attempting to justify the shooting by alleging “without foundation,” in the council’s words that the woman was a thief or a cannabis user. The council described those claims as false and warned against narratives that appear to excuse lethal violence. Princess Kate celebrated her birthday on January 9 with a personal message shared via the official Prince and PrPrince and Princess incess of Wales Instagram account. The post attracted widespread attention and messages from supporters around the world, including members of the royal family. Observers noted that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did not issue a public birthday greeting on social media, a decision that drew attention amid ongoing speculation about potential reconciliation between the Sussexes and the royal household. A source quoted by ShuterScoop indicated that the lack of a public message was deliberate and not intended as a snub. According to the source, Markle preferred to allow Princess Kate privacy, particularly following her recent health challenges related to cancer treatment. The source added that the decision reflected respect for what the Princess of Wales has been experiencing, rather than distance or disregard. However, another account suggested the silence could also be interpreted as a sign that the Sussexes are maintaining firm boundaries in their relationship with the royal family. In an interview, Hamilton explained that the song began taking shape while she was traveling from Accra to Koforidua to visit Elder Mireku . She said the initial melody and lyrics came to her the night before the trip and continued to form throughout the journey. Upon her arrival, Hamilton said she and Elder Mireku began worshipping together using a keyboard, a practice she described as common during her visits. During the session, the song evolved further as they experimented with different musical keys and arrangements. She noted that the worship moment was recorded and described it as a significant experience, emphasizing that the song was not completed prior to the visit. Instead, she said it developed organically through their shared worship. After the session, Hamilton realised the song was entirely in English and decided to involve South African worship leader Ntokozo Mbambo . She said Mbambo later joined the project, completing the song through a cross-border gospel collaboration. Since its release, “Aha Ye,” which translates to “The Good Place,” has gained recognition among gospel audiences for its reflective message and worship-focused sound. Published: January 26, 2026 at 8:24:31 AM Modified: January 26, 2026 at 8:41:06 AM Written By | The Editorial Staff The Editorial Staff KAMPALA/WASHINGTON — Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has warned that Kampala could retaliate if the United States imposes sanctions on him or Uganda, sharpening an already tense exchange as senior U.S. lawmakers press for a reassessment of relations following concerns over Uganda’s recent elections. In posts on X by Muhoozi said any sanctions by “spoilers in the USA” would be met with reciprocal measures, adding that Uganda seeks peace but retains the ability to defend itself. The remarks were his most direct response yet to public calls in Washington for targeted restrictions as reported by Chimpreports . The warning came after U.S. Senator Jim Risch, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, described Uganda’s elections as a “hollow exercise” and urged the U.S. administration to review its security relationship with Kampala, including whether sanctions should apply to specific actors. In his statement , Risch explicitly named Muhoozi as a potential target. Risch argued that while Uganda remains an important regional security partner, governance concerns including allegations of political violence, intimidation of opponents and misuse of state resources should trigger closer scrutiny of U.S. engagement. He also cited broader regional implications, warning that Uganda and Tanzania were moving along “similar paths,” as other countries in the region prepare for elections. Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Adonia Ayebare, struck a more measured tone, saying relations between Kampala and Washington remain strong and mutually beneficial, and emphasising long-standing cooperation on regional security and commercial interests. While no fresh sanctions have been announced, the exchange points to a potential policy review track in Washington one that could affect military cooperation if political rhetoric hardens into formal measures. The U.S. has previously used targeted tools, including Global Magnitsky-linked authorities, against Ugandan officials. In December 2021, the U.S. Treasury designated then-military intelligence chief Abel Kandiho over alleged serious human rights abuse . A parallel State Department action also cited torture allegations in its public designations. For now, the most immediate “review” signal is political: pressure from Capitol Hill to reassess the terms and safeguards of U.S.-Uganda security engagement, against a backdrop of governance and election credibility concerns and an increasingly public Ugandan pushback framed as sovereignty and reciprocity. source : Chimpreports ADVERTISEMENT Uganda Uganda Keep Reading Elections Monitoring Uganda–U.S. Ties Under Review After Muhoozi Sanctions Warning Muhoozi warns of reciprocal action as Washington weighs accountability over elections .
