Entertainment Davido Reacts to Allegation of $50,000 Wedding Planner Debt Davido has reacted after a wedding planner alleged he owed $50,000 in unpaid fees, calling the viral claim “crazy” on social media. Published: January 27, 2026 at 7:42:04 AM Modified: January 27, 2026 at 7:42:04 AM Written By | Witty Pascal Entertainment Editor Witty Pascal According to a report by Daily Post , Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has responded publicly after being accused of owing a wedding planner $50,000 in unpaid fees related to his wedding ceremony. The allegation surfaced on social media after Funke Bucknor-Obruthe , chief executive of the event planning company reportedly responsible for organizing Davido and Chioma ’s wedding, was said to have raised concerns over an outstanding payment. The claim gained traction online alongside an alleged private chat in which the planner threatened legal action over the matter. The viral report quickly drew attention across social media platforms, prompting reactions from fans and commentators as screenshots and claims circulated widely. Davido addressed the allegation on Sunday evening via X (formerly Twitter), where he dismissed the report and described the situation as an insult. Reacting briefly, the singer wrote that the allegation was “just crazy at this point,” signaling his rejection of the claim. As of the time of reporting, no legal action has been publicly confirmed, and neither party has released further details clarifying the status of the alleged debt. Ganduje says APC will back Kano Gov Abba Yusuf for 2027 after his return from NNPP, but formal ticket processes still apply. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is a Nigerian politician and senior figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) APC Signals 2027 Backing for Kano Gov Yusuf After Defection Ganduje says APC will back Kano Gov Abba Yusuf for 2027 after his return from NNPP, but formal ticket processes still apply. Published: January 27, 2026 at 6:39:25 AM Modified: January 27, 2026 at 6:49:05 AM Written By | Neema Asha Mwakalinga Travel & Culture Expert Neema Asha Mwakalinga The All Progressives Congress (APC) is signalling early political support for Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s 2027 re-election bid following his return to the ruling party, with former national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje publicly promising party backing at a reception in Kano on Monday as first reported by the PUNCH . Speaking at the event held at the Coronation Hall of Government House, Kano, Ganduje described Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as a “historic homecoming” and told party members the governor should be treated as the APC leader in the state, in line with the party’s practice of recognising sitting governors as state leaders. Ganduje also went further, telling the gathering that Yusuf would win a second term in 2027 and claiming the party had engaged other aspirants who had agreed to support the governor. While the comments were presented as a show of unity, they amount to political assurances rather than a formal nomination, which typically follows internal party procedures closer to election season. Why Yusuf’s defection matters for APC’s 2027 posture Kano is one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states , and Yusuf’s move strengthens APC’s claim to momentum in the North-West ahead of the next general elections. Yusuf resigned from the NNPP on January 23, citing internal crises, legal disputes, and what he described as the need to protect Kano’s development interests. In his resignation letter, Yusuf said his decision followed consultations and was aimed at aligning Kano more closely with the Federal Government, framing the switch as a governance and stability calculation rather than a personal dispute with former allies. The governor’s return to APC was accompanied by a large bloc of elected officials in Kano including state lawmakers, members of the House of Representatives, and local government chairmen signalling a broad realignment that could affect both party structures and electoral planning heading into 2027. APC leaders used the defection to project cohesion. Separately, Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin welcomed Yusuf and said he would collaborate with him on Kano’s development, describing the move as strengthening APC in the region. The NNPP, however, criticised the defection. Prince Nweze Onu, described as the party’s deputy national chairman, called it a betrayal of voters and argued that holding governorships would not guarantee President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. D.R.Congo President Paul Kagame Rwanda Admits M23 Collaboration: A Scandal of State‑Sponsored Rebel Rwanda’s ambassador admits coordination with AFC/M23. We expose M23 war crimes, Rwanda’s role, and what accountability could look like internationally. Published: January 26, 2026 at 4:25:19 AM Modified: January 26, 2026 at 7:12:46 PM Written By | Serge Kitoko Tshibanda Political Analyst Serge Kitoko Tshibanda Rwanda Admits M23 Collaboration: A Scandal of State‑Sponsored Rebellion Rwanda’s Ambassador Admits Coordination With AFC/M23 On 22 January 2026, Rwanda’s ambassador to the United States, Mathilde Mukantabana, submitted a statement to the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee . In the written testimony, she thanked the Trump administration for brokering the Washington Accords between Kigali and Kinshasa and described Rwanda’s long‑held fear of genocidal insurgencies operating from eastern Congo. In a brief section titled “Rwanda’s Defensive Measures and Transparency,” the ambassador made a startling admission: she acknowledged that Rwanda “does engage in security coordination with AFC/M23 ” and claimed that this cooperation is intended to protect Congolese Tutsi communities from extremist militias. She emphasised that Rwanda and the Alliance Fleuve Congo/March 23 Movement ( AFC/M23) share an interest in defending Tutsi and preventing another cross‑border genocide. Coming after years of Kigali’s public denials, the admission marked a turning point. How can a sovereign government enter into a defence agreement with a rebel group accused of massacres, sexual violence, and forced displacement? This exposé examines who M23 and its new alliance really are, catalogues the crimes committed under their banner, analyses the legal consequences of a state aligning with an armed group, and asks why parts of the international community have remained silent. A state aligning with a rebel group accused of war crimes is not diplomacy, it is complicity.” “This admission collapses Kigali’s denial narrative and opens the door to sanctions and prosecutions.” Who are M23 and the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC)? Roots in a broken peace The March 23 Movement (M23) emerged from the collapse of a 23 March 2009 peace deal between the Congolese government and the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP). In 2012, former CNDP fighters mutinied, took the name M23 in reference to that agreement, and seized Goma , a city of two million people, within 24 hours. Under regional pressure, M23 withdrew and signed a new accord in December 2013. The group went dormant for nearly a decade. Re‑emergence and Rwandan support M23 is a predominantly Tutsi‑led rebel organisation. According to eyewitness reports, it re‑emerged in late 2021 after years of dormancy. The U.S. Treasury notes that M23 reappeared with assistance from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF). In February 2024, the group cut the last overland supply route to Goma, and in May 2024, it captured the coltan‑rich town of Rubaya . The M23 campaign displaced around 1.5 million people and was marked by killings, attacks on civilians, and sexual violence . In short, M23’s return to the battlefield was facilitated by logistical and military support from Kigali. The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) On 15 December 2023, former Congolese election chief Corneille Nangaa launched the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) , also known as the Congo River Alliance. The new coalition invited armed groups and dissident Congolese officials to join its insurgency. The U.S. Treasury identifies AFC as a political‑military coalition whose principal member is M23; the coalition ’s goal is to overthrow the Congolese government. Africanews reported that the movement was unveiled in Nairobi with M23 president Bertrand Bisimwa present, and that Nangaa openly allied himself with several rebel movements, including M23. AFC thus provides a political façade for M23’s military operations and seeks to expand its insurgency beyond eastern Congo. Leadership and structure According to EU sanctions documents, M23 is led by President Bertrand Bisimwa, head of recruitment Désiré Rukomera, Colonel John Imani Nzenze, deputy financial chief Jean‑Bosco Nzabonimpa Mupenzi, and Joseph Musanga Bahati, who served as governor of North Kivu under the group’s illegal administration . These leaders manage recruitment, propaganda, finances, and de facto governance in captured territories. The EU also sanctioned Rwandan special forces commander Ruki Karusisi, Major General Eugene Nkubito, and Brigadier General Pascal Muhizi for sustaining M23’s offensive. The U.S. Treasury further notes that former electoral commissioner Corneille Nangaa coordinates AFC and travels with Bisimwa to promote the alliance. These listings underscore that M23/AFC is both a rebel military force and a political network with support from elements of the Rwandan state. M23 as a proxy force Numerous investigations have concluded that Rwanda has used M23 as a proxy to project power into eastern DRC. The UN Group of Experts on the DRC found direct intervention of the Rwanda Defence Force to reinforce M23, including the provision of weapons, ammunition, and uniforms. Human Rights Watch similarly reported that M23 received logistical support and reinforcement from the RDF, including arms and troops. The U.S. Treasury states that M23 re‑emerged in 2021 with the help of the RDF and that the coalition operates under Rwanda’s command and control. These findings contradict Kigali’s past denials and show that M23 functions as a Rwandan proxy, deployed to secure mineral‑rich areas and pressure Kinshasa. Documented M23 Crimes: Massacres, Rape, Displacement The March 23 Movement has been responsible for a catalogue of war crimes and serious human rights violations documented by international organisations, independent investigators, and survivors. Kigali’s admission of “security coordination” with M23 implicates Rwanda in these abuses. Massacres and killings Kishishe and Bambo massacres (Nov 2022). UN investigators reported that M23 fighters executed at least 131 villagers in the towns of Kishishe and Bambo between 29 and 30 November 2022. Victims were arbitrarily shot or hacked to death, women were raped, and property was looted. The Congolese government accused M23 of killing up to 272 people in the attacks. Kishishe summary executions (Nov 2022). Amnesty International documented that M23 fighters summarily killed at least 20 men and raped at least 66 women and girls in Kishishe between 21 and 30 November 2022. Survivors described gang rapes, house‑to‑house killings, and forced theft of livestock. Amnesty warned that these acts constitute war crimes and could amount to crimes against humanity. Forced execution and recruitment (Feb 2023). Human Rights Watch reported that M23 fighters summarily executed at least 22 civilians around Kishishe , including older men, and forcibly recruited civilians, some as young as 25, from Rwanda and Congo. Witnesses recounted being whipped and forced to scout Congolese army positions Recruitment of child soldiers M23 has been repeatedly accused of recruiting and using child soldiers. Human Rights Watch documented the forced recruitment of youths, some from Rwanda, who were transported to camps, given weapons, and pushed into battle. The U.S. Treasury’s sanctions designation notes that M23 was first sanctioned in 2013 for serious violations of international law involving the targeting of children, including killing, maiming, and abducting minors. The EU press release adds that Twirwaneho, an AFC‑affiliated group in South Kivu, forcibly recruits minors and has been sanctioned accordingly. Sexual violence Amnesty International recorded at least 66 rapes of women and girls during the November 2022 Kishishe massacre. Survivors described gang rapes accompanied by beatings and the killing of husbands and sons. The U.S. Treasury states that M23’s rebellion has been accompanied by sexual violence and that promoting accountability for conflict‑related sexual violence is a U.S. priority. Forced displacement and looting The resurgence of M23 has displaced around 1.5 million people in eastern Congo . The group routinely loots civilian property and imposes illegal taxes on goods, as noted by UN experts. Human Rights Watch reports that M23 fighters have fired on civilian vehicles and attacked displacement sites, causing further loss of life and terror. These crimes underline the humanitarian cost of M23’s operations and the complicity of its backers. Rwanda’s Legal Exposure Under International Law Under the Articles of State Responsibility, a state that aids or assists a non‑state armed group risks becoming internationally responsible for the group’s wrongful acts. Legal scholars Ryan Goodman and Vladyslav Lanovoy explain that a state “runs a high legal risk of violating international law in aiding or assisting an organised armed group’s commission of internationally wrongful acts ”. The same article notes that aiding and abetting liability under international criminal law does not require the assisting officials to share the armed group’s purpose; knowledge that their support will facilitate offences suffices . In other words, Rwanda’s acknowledged coordination with M23 could expose it to legal claims for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by its proxy. EU and U.S. Sanctions Target M23 and Rwanda’s Network The international community has begun to respond to M23’s resurgence and Rwanda’s role: EU targeted sanctions (17 March 2025). The Council of the European Union imposed restrictive measures on nine individuals and one entity for sustaining the conflict in eastern DRC. Five of the listed individuals are senior M23 leaders, including Bisimwa and Rukomera; three are RDF commanders (Ruki Karusisi, Eugene Nkubito, and Pascal Muhizi) who support M23 operations. The EU also sanctioned Francis Kamanzi, CEO of Rwanda’s Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board, and Gasabo Gold Refinery for illicitly importing gold from M23‑controlled areas. Those designated face travel bans, asset freezes, and prohibitions on EU citizens providing funds. U.S. Treasury sanctions (Jan 2026). The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Rwandan presidential adviser James Kabarebe and M23’s civilian president Bertrand Bisimwa. The sanctions note that Kabarebe orchestrates RDF support for M23 and manages the regime’s revenue from Congolese minerals, while Bisimwa facilitates rebel administrations and public outreach. These designations block property under U.S. jurisdiction and signal a willingness to hold Rwandan officials accountable. UN arms embargo violations. The UN Group of Experts documented Rwanda’s direct intervention to reinforce M23 with arms and uniforms, acts that violate the UN arms embargo. Continued violations could trigger further Security Council measures. Comparative precedent – Eritrea and al‑Shabaab. In 2011, the UN Security Council toughened sanctions against Eritrea for plotting terrorist attacks and supporting the al‑Shabaab insurgency in Somalia. The resolution authorised travel bans and asset freezes and demanded that Eritrea cease all direct or indirect efforts to destabilise neighbouring states. Kigali’s admission of cooperation with M23 mirrors the behaviour for which Eritrea was sanctioned, suggesting that similar measures against Rwanda are legally plausible. Potential consequences Should the international community recognise Rwanda’s admission as evidence of state support to M23, Rwanda could face: Expanded sanctions from the UN, EU, and U.S., including travel bans and asset freezes on senior officials and entities involved in the support network. Suspension of aid and peacekeeping roles, as Rwanda’s participation in UN peacekeeping could be reconsidered to prevent conflict of interest. Universal jurisdiction lawsuits brought by NGOs or survivors in countries with laws enabling the prosecution of foreign officials for war crimes. Heightened scrutiny of Rwanda’s economic partnerships; the EU has already targeted a Rwandan gold refinery. Kagame’s Denials Collapse: From “No Link ” to Admission Until recently, Kigali consistently denied supporting M23 . In January 2025, President Paul Kagame told Anadolu Agency that M23 fighters were Congolese and refugees from Uganda, insisting that Rwanda merely disarmed fighters who fled into its territory. Rwanda’s foreign minister repeated similar denials on France’s TV5 Monde just two months before the ambassador’s testimony. The ambassador’s statement to Congress, therefore, represents either a strategic shift or an inadvertent admission. Rwanda now frames its cooperation with AFC/M23 as defensive and temporary, contingent on the neutralisation of the Forces Démocratiques de Libération du Rwanda (FDLR). Yet by publicly acknowledging a relationship that Kigali has long denied, Rwanda has undermined its own narrative and opened itself to legal scrutiny. What Justice Could Look Like for Congo’s Victims For President Félix Tshisekedi and Congolese civil society, the ambassador’s admission is being hailed as a diplomatic triumph. Kinshasa has spent years presenting evidence of Rwandan involvement to the United Nations, African Union, European Union, and United States. The EU press release explicitly notes that the renewed offensive of M23/AFC is “ supported by the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) ”. The ambassador’s testimony, coupled with the Washington Accords requiring phased drawdown of Rwanda’s defensive measures as the FDLR is neutralised, signals that Kigali is finally acknowledging the problem. Congolese diplomats have characterised the admission as “the mask falling.” With international awareness growing and sanctions expanding, Congo’s position that Rwanda is fuelling proxy warfare is gaining traction. Will Governments, NGOs, and Brands Continue Their Silence? Despite mounting evidence, several actors have remained conspicuously silent: Non‑governmental organisations (NGOs) and think tanks that once praised Rwanda’s post‑genocide recovery have been slow to criticise its cross‑border operations. Their reluctance to condemn Kigali’s support for M23 raises questions about impartiality and donor influence. Foreign governments – particularly those with strategic or economic ties to Rwanda – have hesitated to speak out. Some Western governments continue to supply aid and military training despite the evidence of proxy warfare. Corporate sponsors such as Paris Saint‑Germain and other brands involved in the “ Visit Rwanda ” marketing campaign have not publicly addressed Kigali’s alliance with M23. As more details emerge, pressure will grow on companies benefiting from Rwanda’s public‑relations spending to explain their silence and reconsider partnerships. Conclusion: From ambiguity to accountability Rwanda’s admission that it coordinates security with the AFC/M23 marks a watershed moment in the long‑running Congo conflict. For decades, Kigali exploited ambiguity, denying involvement while benefitting from M23’s military gains and the mineral wealth of eastern Congo. The ambassador’s testimony removes that ambiguity. International law is clear: states that aid armed groups committing atrocities face liability . M23’s catalogue of massacres, sexual violence, child recruitment, and forced displacement is well‑documented. By acknowledging cooperation, Rwanda has tied itself to these crimes. The time for equivocation is over. Diplomatic euphemisms about “defensive measures” cannot mask the reality of a government working with a rebel group accused of war crimes. Accountability must be pursued on multiple fronts: through sanctions, legal action, suspension of aid and peacekeeping roles, and public pressure on corporate partners. Above all, justice demands recognition of the Congolese victims of M23’s violence. Without accountability, there can be no lasting peace in the Great Lakes region. FAQ Q1: Did Rwanda officially admit working with M23? Yes, Rwanda’s ambassador referenced “security coordination with AFC/M23,” which marks a major shift from previous denials. Q2: What crimes has M23 been accused of? M23 has been linked to massacres, sexual violence, forced displacement, looting, and child recruitment, according to human rights organizations and international investigations. Q3: Can Rwanda face sanctions for supporting M23? Yes. The EU and U.S. have already sanctioned M23-linked figures, and Rwanda’s admission may increase pressure for deeper restrictions. Q4: What does this mean for justice in eastern Congo? It strengthens calls for accountability, political, legal, and financial, against networks enabling armed violence in the DRC. - DRC Debut Eurobond: $750M Bond Plan, Risks & Strategy
DR Congo plans a $750M debut Eurobond in April as part of a $1.5B program. Here’s what it means for infrastructure, risk, and investors. D.R.Congo, Economy DRC President Felix Tshisekedi DRC Debut Eurobond: $750M Bond Plan, Risks & Strategy DR Congo plans a $750M debut Eurobond in April as part of a $1.5B program. Here’s what it means for infrastructure, risk, and investors. Published: January 26, 2026 at 4:17:29 PM Modified: January 26, 2026 at 4:31:33 PM Written By | Serge Kitoko Tshibanda Political Analyst Serge Kitoko Tshibanda The Democratic Republic of Congo is preparing to issue its first-ever Eurobond, planning to raise $750 million in April as part of a wider $1.5 billion borrowing program. The debut move signals a strategic shift toward commercial financing and global investor scrutiny, as Kinshasa seeks to fund infrastructure while navigating risks tied to commodity prices and insecurity in eastern Congo. What Is DRC Planning With the $750 Million Eurobond? According to Central Bank Governor André Wameso, the April issuance will be the first tranche of a broader $1.5 billion Eurobond programme. Proceeds from the borrowing are earmarked for infrastructure development, a long-standing bottleneck in Congo’s economic growth. National experts are currently working alongside international advisory firms on due diligence to meet the April timeline, signalling an effort to align the issuance with global market standards. If successful, the bond would mark Congo’s first direct access to global debt investors — a milestone for a country that has historically relied on concessional loans, bilateral financing, and multilateral support. Why Congo Is Entering Global Bond Markets Now Several factors explain the timing. First, Congo’s credit outlook was revised from “stable” to “positive” by S&P Global Ratings last week, improving its appeal to investors. This reflects relatively low public debt levels and a favourable assessment of macroeconomic management by the International Monetary Fund. Second, international market conditions have eased compared to previous years. African issuers such as Angola and Nigeria have returned to markets, while Benin successfully issued a sukuk bond in early 2026. This reopening of appetite for African sovereign risk has created a narrow but strategic window that Congo is seeking to exploit. Third, Kinshasa is under pressure to accelerate infrastructure investment — in transport, energy, and logistics — to support growth in its copper and cobalt sectors and to convert mineral wealth into broader economic development. What the Eurobond Means for Congo’s Economic Strategy Issuing a Eurobond is not just about raising cash. It is also a reputational move. By tapping global markets, Congo is effectively inviting scrutiny from international investors, ratings agencies, and analysts. Transparency, fiscal discipline, and policy credibility become more important — and more visible. For the government, this is a way to signal confidence in its economic trajectory and to diversify funding sources beyond traditional lenders. The central bank’s active role, as highlighted by Governor Wameso, suggests a coordinated institutional effort to reassure markets and manage risks. Investor Risks: Conflict, Commodities, and Debt Pressure The IMF has cautioned that Congo remains exposed to external shocks, particularly commodity price volatility and the ongoing conflict in the eastern part of the country involving Rwanda-backed armed groups. Any deterioration in security or a sharp fall in copper and cobalt prices could strain public finances and complicate debt servicing. For Congo, entering commercial debt markets also brings longer-term obligations. Eurobonds are more expensive than concessional financing, and mismanaging proceeds could quickly erode the credibility the country is seeking to build. The Bigger Picture: Congo’s Pivot From Aid to Markets Congo’s planned Eurobond places it among a growing group of African states attempting to reposition themselves as credible market borrowers rather than perpetual aid recipients. If the April issuance succeeds, it could open the door to future financing — and impose stronger discipline on economic governance. In that sense, the $750 million bond is less about the amount raised than about what it represents: a bet that Congo’s improving macroeconomic fundamentals, reform narrative, and strategic importance can translate into trust from global investors — and, ultimately, into roads, power, and infrastructure on the ground. Entertainment Amber Heard Says Depp Trial Silenced Her, Debuts Film at Sundance Amber Heard says her voice was silenced after losing a defamation case to Johnny Depp, as she premieres a new film at Sundance. Published: January 26, 2026 at 4:08:47 PM Modified: January 26, 2026 at 4:08:48 PM Written By | Witty Pascal Entertainment Editor Witty Pascal According to the source article, American actress Amber Heard has spoken publicly about the impact of her legal defeat against former husband Johnny Depp, saying the case left her feeling silenced. Heard made the remarks in connection with a new documentary film titled “Silenced,” which premiered over the weekend at the Sundance Film Festival. In the film, she revisits the highly publicized legal battle with Depp and reflects on how the verdict affected her personal life and public voice. “I never imagined it would become this damaging to speak as a woman,” Heard says in the film, adding that she felt she lost the power to express herself following the trial. The legal dispute stemmed from a defamation lawsuit filed by Depp after Heard wrote a 2018 opinion piece in The Washington Post describing herself as a survivor of domestic abuse. Although Depp was not named in the article, he argued that the claims harmed his reputation. In 2022, a jury in Virginia ruled largely in Depp’s favor, concluding that Heard had defamed him through three statements linked to the article. The verdict marked a turning point in public perception of both actors. Following the trial, Heard withdrew from much of the entertainment media spotlight and later relocated to Spain. Reports indicate she became a mother to twins last year. While her public image has struggled to recover, Depp ’s career has seen renewed momentum, with the actor securing major film projects since the ruling. The Sundance screening marks one of Heard’s most visible public appearances since the trial, signaling a cautious return to the public conversation surrounding her experience. The remarks were made in a video shared on Instagram by social media personality Tunde Ednut , where Burna Boy described Fela as “the king” and said no other musician surpasses him. The comments come amid ongoing online discussions in Nigeria over comparisons between contemporary Afrobeat stars and Fela Kuti . The debate intensified after fans compared singer Wizkid to Fela, a claim strongly rejected by Fela’s youngest son, Seun Kuti , who argued that such comparisons diminish his father’s historical and political impact. Fela Kuti, who died in 1997, is widely credited with founding Afrobeat, blending African rhythms with jazz, funk, and politically charged lyrics. His work continues to influence many of today’s leading Afrobeat artists. The artist made the announcement following the release of his latest track, “ Kristu Yezu” , explaining that the decision is aimed at strengthening his independence as a musician while giving fans an opportunity to directly support his work. Under the new release model, listeners who want early access to Zeo Trap ’s music will be required to pay a fee before the songs are made public. The rapper said the current price for early access is set at 300 Rwandan francs, describing it as affordable for fans who value local music. Zeo Trap confirmed that his songs are being distributed through a digital music platform designed for direct sales and controlled releases. He added that all future music will follow the same pattern, debuting on the website before appearing on YouTube and other mainstream streaming services. While acknowledging that many listeners are accustomed to free and immediate releases, Zeo Trap said some fans have already embraced the idea of paying for early access as a way of supporting artists directly. Similar strategies are increasingly being adopted by musicians internationally to maintain control over their work and improve revenue returns. Industry observers note that direct-to-consumer music distribution allows artists to better manage their content, build closer relationships with their audiences, and earn higher returns compared to traditional streaming platforms, where revenues are often shared with intermediaries. - Why Abba Yusuf’s APC Switch Is Shaking Kano Politics
Abba Yusuf’s defection from NNPP to APC is reshaping Kano’s alliances and 2027 calculations, drawing sharp reactions from opposition parties. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Why Abba Yusuf’s APC Switch Is Shaking Kano Politics Abba Yusuf’s defection from NNPP to APC is reshaping Kano’s alliances and 2027 calculations, drawing sharp reactions from opposition parties. Published: January 26, 2026 at 12:25:55 PM Modified: January 26, 2026 at 12:37:08 PM Written By | Neema Asha Mwakalinga Travel & Culture Expert Neema Asha Mwakalinga Kano’s political equation is under fresh strain after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf moved from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), triggering immediate pushback from opposition parties and an angry response from his former platform. The development, which the APC has framed as a major gain ahead of 2027, is being interpreted by rivals as elite realignment that may not translate into votes as Reported by The PUNCH . A defection with unusually high political weight Yusuf is not just any governor in Nigeria’s shifting party landscape. Kano is one of the country’s most politically consequential states, and his victory under the NNPP banner in 2023 was closely tied to the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement led by former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. That backdrop is why the NNPP described Yusuf’s exit as a betrayal of the Kano electorate and a direct blow to a political structure that mobilised voters for him. Beyond Yusuf’s personal move, the scale of accompanying defections is central to why the moment is being treated as disruptive. According to statements cited in the report, Yusuf is expected to formalise his APC registration alongside dozens of elected officials across state and federal legislatures and Kano’s local government leadership an organisational shift that can quickly change campaign machinery, patronage networks, and grassroots coordination. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Labour Party (LP) have argued that defections by political office holders should not be confused with voter alignment. Their public line is that electoral strength is ultimately determined at the ballot box, and that governors who switch platforms midstream do not automatically “move” the electorate with them. This argument mirrors a wider national debate about whether the growing trend of cross-party defections reflects genuine ideological convergence or strategic repositioning ahead of 2027. APC calls it validation; critics see a deeper 2027 test APC officials, including party spokesmen quoted in the report, describe Yusuf’s return as a “homecoming” and a sign the party’s agenda is gaining broader acceptance. Opponents counter that the ruling party’s expanding ranks raise questions about competitive balance, especially amid recurring public concerns about whether Nigeria is drifting toward one-party dominance an allegation the presidency and APC leaders have repeatedly denied in other public statements. For broader context on that national argument: The Kwankwasiyya factor: what this could stress-test Even for analysts who expect party switching to continue nationwide, Kano is a special case because of how strongly political identity and mobilisation have been shaped by the Kwankwasiyya bloc. If Yusuf’s move weakens the NNPP’s structure in the state, APC could gain organisational advantage. If, however, the movement’s grassroots loyalty holds independently of Yusuf’s position, the defection could become a test of whether Kano voters follow platforms, personalities, or entrenched political networks. A deeper look at the fault lines this creates in Kano’s power structure is also discussed here . What to watch next (without guessing outcomes) Formal registration and attendance: whether national APC figures publicly anchor the “homecoming” narrative in Kano. NNPP’s response strategy: whether the party rallies around Kwankwasiyya structures to show it retains voter loyalty. Opposition coordination: whether PDP/ADC/LP translate rhetorical pushback into practical alliances on the ground. 2027 calculations: whether this becomes a template for further high-profile switches or a cautionary tale if voters punish perceived opportunism. source: The PUNCH report ADVERTISEMENT Nigeria Gov Services Nigeria Gov Services Africa Africa Nigeria Nigeria Keep Reading Political Scandals Why Abba Yusuf’s APC Switch Is Shaking Kano Politics Opposition rejects “earthquake” narrative as NNPP cites betrayal and APC calls it a homecoming .
