Credit:gettyimages Former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has shared new insights into the extended efforts it took to secure Ademola Lookman’s decision to switch allegiance from England to Nigeria, as reported by OwngoalNigeria.com . Lookman, who has emerged as a key player for the Super Eagles and a top contender for the African Player of the Year award, had previously represented England at various youth levels, including the 2017 U20 World Cup, where he was part of the victorious squad. Rohr, reflecting on Lookman’s rise, revealed that convincing the forward to commit to Nigeria was a process that spanned nearly two years. Unfortunately, by the time Lookman’s switch was approved, Rohr was no longer in charge of the Super Eagles. "The discussions began in 2020, but the official approval came in 2021, after I had already left my role as Nigeria's coach. He was on my provisional list for AFCON, but we were still awaiting clearance. The final approval arrived in 2022, just after the tournament in Cameroon," Rohr, now coach of Benin Republic, explained. "I’m happy with his progress, even though he’s scored twice against my team," he added. Rohr also highlighted that Lookman had been involved with England’s senior national setup for some time, and the decision to switch wasn’t immediate. "We had discussions with his representatives and family members, and it took nearly two years. I’m certain he doesn’t regret his decision now." Born in Tigray in the mid-1990s, Gebru's passion for cycling began at a young age despite the challenges she faced, including the high cost of bikes which limited her access to the sport. At 16, she rented a bike and joined Ketema Axum Cycling club, where her journey began. Gebru had to choose between her education and cycling, a decision made easier by the support of her mother and the inspiration from prominent African cyclists like Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Tsgabu Grmay. Her cycling career took a significant hit with the outbreak of the Tigray war in November 2020. The conflict displaced millions and forced Gebru to flee, seeking asylum in Nice, France, after attending the 2021 World Championships in Belgium. Despite not being able to compete professionally for two years, Gebru’s determination remained unwavering . With the help of a former coach and support from the International Olympic Committee's Refugee Athlete Scholarship, she found a new club in France and reignited her cycling career. ANIF, responsible for financial investigations and anti-corruption efforts, plays a key role in promoting financial transparency in the country. Reports indicate that Engonga was captured on video in explicit encounters with several women, including close family members and influential figures. Engonga, also known as "Bello," is a well-known public figure in Equatorial Guinea, born on March 15, 1970, in Malabo. He holds a degree in economics and finance from the University of Malabo and is married with six children. The scandal escalated after authorities allegedly discovered over 300 videos on his computer, featuring encounters with multiple women, including some married to high-ranking officials. The footage, reportedly recorded with consent, was later leaked online, igniting public outrage and disapproval from government officials. Engonga also faces accusations of financial misconduct. Allegations suggest he may have been involved in misappropriating over 1.2 billion Central African CFA francs from public funds. Following these allegations, Engonga, along with other implicated officials, is under preventive detention, with several assets frozen as part of the ongoing investigation. Equatorial Guinea’s Vice President, Teodoro Nguema, publicly addressed the scandal on social media, denouncing inappropriate conduct in government offices. He reiterated that sexual relations are strictly forbidden in administrative workplaces, cautioning that violations would lead to disciplinary action. Local media reported that some explicit scenes involving Engonga occurred within his office, even displaying the National Flag, further intensifying the scandal. The government has responded by announcing new measures aimed at restoring the country’s reputation and upholding professional conduct within public institutions. Nigeria's Olympic Campaign Ends in Disappointment with N12 Billion Spent, No Medals Secured Prince Jean Aug 11, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Team Nigeria Returns Empty-Handed from Paris 2024 Olympics Despite N12 Billion Investment Despite a substantial investment of Twelve billion naira (N12 billion) by the Federal Government of Nigeria, Team Nigeria has officially ended its 2024 Olympic campaign without securing a single medal. The disappointing outcome marks the country's worst performance since the London 2012 Olympics, as reported by BSNSports.com.ng . Senator John Enoh, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, acknowledged the team's poor performance, which fell far short of expectations. Although Team Nigeria entered the Paris Games with high hopes, having shown promise in qualifying events, they were unable to replicate their continental success on the Olympic stage. The Nigerian contingent competed in 12 events, with standout athletes like Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Blessing Oborodudu, Ruth Usoro, Pristina Ochonogor, and Ogazi among those who briefly raised the nation's hopes. However, their efforts ultimately fell short of the podium. The final blow came when Hannah Reuben, Nigeria’s last athlete in the competition, was defeated 5-2 by Mongolia's Davaanasan Amar Enkh in the Wrestling 76kg category on Saturday, sealing Nigeria's fate at the Games. As Nigeria reflects on its Paris 2024 experience, attention now turns to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where the nation will aim for a significant improvement. - Nigeria's Dangote Refinery Reselling Crude Amid Technical Issues, reports say | Xtrafrica
Nigeria's Dangote Refinery Reselling Crude Amid Technical Issues, reports say louis Buyisiwe Jul 27, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link The Dangote Refinery in Nigeria, set to be the largest in Africa and Europe upon reaching full capacity, is currently facing technical issues leading to the reselling of crude cargoes. Nigeria's major Dangote oil refinery is reselling cargoes of U.S. and Nigerian crude, according to four trade sources familiar with the matter. Three of these sources linked the reoffer to technical problems at the refinery. Despite market talk about operational issues affecting the crude distillation unit (CDU), a Dangote executive confirmed that the CDU is in operation. The refinery, which started production in January, is set to become the largest in Africa and Europe once it reaches full capacity. This development could disrupt the highly lucrative Europe-to-Africa fuel trade and transform Nigeria into a fuel exporter. Sources reported that cargoes of Nigerian Escravos and Forcados crude, as well as U.S. WTI Midland crude, were among the grades being offered. Traders have noted that the plant has been importing several crude cargoes monthly. While resales by refineries are rare, they are not unheard of, according to traders. The news impacted crude prices, with Brent crude falling as much as 2.5% towards $80 a barrel, though it recovered to above $81 by 1700 GMT. The 650,000 barrel-per-day refinery, built at a cost of $20 billion by Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote, aims to reverse Nigeria's reliance on fuel imports despite being Africa's biggest oil producer. - Meta Removes 63,000 Instagram Accounts in Nigeria for Sextortion Scams Targeting U.S. Adults | Xtrafrica
Meta Removes 63,000 Instagram Accounts in Nigeria for Sextortion Scams Targeting U.S. Adults louis Buyisiwe Jul 25, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Meta cracks down on sextortion scams, removing 63,000 Instagram accounts in Nigeria Meta Platforms (META.O) announced on Wednesday that it had removed approximately 63,000 Instagram accounts in Nigeria for attempting financial sexual extortion scams, primarily targeting adult men in the United States. These fraudulent activities, often perpetrated by Nigerian online fraudsters known as "Yahoo boys," include a range of scams, from posing as individuals in financial distress to impersonating Nigerian princes promising high investment returns. In a detailed statement, Meta revealed that it had also eliminated 7,200 Facebook accounts, pages, and groups dedicated to sharing scamming tips. Furthermore, the company dismantled a smaller network of around 2,500 accounts linked to a group of about 20 individuals. These efforts aimed to curb "sextortion," where victims are blackmailed with the release of compromising photos, either genuine or fabricated, unless they pay a ransom. Most of the scammers' attempts were unsuccessful, targeting both adults and minors. Meta reported these incidents involving minors to the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. This recent operation is part of Meta's ongoing battle against such networks , disclosed to raise public awareness. Meta has faced increased scrutiny from governments worldwide, including the United States, where lawmakers have intensified pressure on the company to address the harm its platforms may pose to children. Earlier this year, a U.S. lawmaker accused Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and other social media executives of having "blood on their hands" for not adequately protecting children from online sexual predators. The U.S. Surgeon General has even suggested adding warning labels to social media apps to highlight these dangers. Nigerian scammers, notorious for "419 scams" (named after the national penal code section on fraud), have expanded their operations amid worsening economic conditions in the country of over 200 million people. These fraudsters operate from various locations, including university dormitories, shantytowns, and affluent neighborhoods. Some of the removed accounts were found to be offering advice on conducting scams, selling scripts and guides for deception, and sharing links to photo collections for creating fake profiles. Meta's recent crackdown underscores its commitment to tackling online fraud and protecting users from financial and sexual exploitation, while also highlighting the ongoing challenges in policing its platforms.
