  • Contaminated Maize Causes Panic in Zambia After 400 Dogs Die | Xtrafrica

Contaminated Maize Causes Panic in Zambia After 400 Dogs Die Ayize claire Aug 22, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link The contaminated maize is believed to have caused the deaths of dogs Zambia is grappling with widespread concern after the deaths of 400 dogs were linked to contaminated maize. Health Minister Elijah Muchima reported that nearly half of the 25 maize samples tested showed dangerously high levels of aflatoxins, a harmful byproduct of mold linked to liver cancer in humans, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The contaminated maize is believed to have caused the deaths of dogs, and authorities are now investigating the potential risk to human health. Although no human fatalities have been confirmed, the Ministry of Health is working to determine if affected plants have made their way into the food supply. The maize contamination is raising alarm in a country where maize constitutes 60% of the population's daily energy intake, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Authorities have begun seizing and testing maize products from various companies, though specific names have not been disclosed. Diamond TV reported that several dog food products made from maize had been pulled from the market. Muchima attributed the rise in aflatoxins to climate change and drought, which have worsened crop conditions this season. Amid growing fears, Zambian citizens are demanding transparency, questioning why the government has not publicly named the contaminated maize brands. The Association of New Companies in Zambia is also conducting its own investigations, intensifying product monitoring as the country seeks to address the issue swiftly. With maize being a staple food for millions of Zambians, the potential impact of this contamination has created widespread concern, with calls for increased inspections and government action to protect public health. • Congo Set to Receive First Mpox Vaccines following Outbreak | Xtrafrica

Congo Set to Receive First Mpox Vaccines following Outbreak Mbeki edmond Aug 20, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Healthcare workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) expects to receive its first mpox vaccine doses next week, thanks to contributions from the United States and Japan. Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba Mulamba announced on Monday that discussions with USAID and the U.S. government had concluded, and vaccines should arrive shortly. This development aims to address the significant vaccine inequity that left African nations without access during the 2022 global mpox outbreak. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared mpox a global public health emergency, particularly due to the rapid spread of the clade Ib variant in Africa. Japan's Ministry of Health confirmed its readiness to supply mpox vaccines to Congo, in collaboration with WHO and other partners. Japan-based KM Biologics and Denmark's Bavarian Nordic are the primary manufacturers of the vaccines. Gavi, the global vaccine alliance, has pledged up to $500 million to support African countries facing mpox outbreaks. Congo has agreed to accept these vaccines as the country battles two strains of the virus: the endemic clade I and the newly emerging clade Ib. Mpox, a viral infection that causes skin lesions and flu-like symptoms, is generally mild but can be fatal . The virus primarily spreads through close physical contact, though it doesn't easily transmit through the air, unlike COVID-19. Credit:gettyimages FIFA has officially selected 12 U.S. stadiums to host the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup in 2025. The tournament will run from June 15 to July 13, 2025, marking the first edition of the newly expanded competition. The final will take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, just five miles from New York City. The other selected venues are: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta TQL Stadium, Cincinnati Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Geodis Park, Nashville Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte Camping World Stadium, Orlando Inter&Co Stadium, Orlando Rose Bowl Stadium, Los Angeles Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia Lumen Field, Seattle Audi Field, Washington DC Qualified Teams and Format Chelsea, Manchester City, and Real Madrid have secured automatic qualification from Europe, having won the Champions League over the past four years. Other European giants like Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Porto, and Benfica will join them based on UEFA's co-efficient rankings. In addition to the eight European teams, six clubs from South America, 12 teams from Asia, Africa, and North America, one team from Oceania, and a club from the U.S. as the host nation will complete the tournament lineup. Previously, the Club World Cup was an annual tournament featuring six continental champions. This revamped format is set to elevate global club football, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino describing it as "the greatest, most inclusive, and merit-based global club competition." Criticism and Opposition FIFA’s decision to expand the competition has faced criticism from clubs and players, especially in light of UEFA’s expansion of the Champions League and Europa League, which now include additional group stage matches. Global players' union FIFPRO and the European Leagues body, representing 1,130 clubs across 33 countries, filed a complaint with the European Commission in July 2023, accusing FIFA of an "abuse of dominance" in football. FIFA has rejected these claims, stating that key stakeholders were consulted during the planning process. Concerns about player welfare have also been raised, with Manchester City midfielder Rodri warning that congested fixture lists are pushing players to the brink of striking. • UN Faces Major Funding Shortfall for Southern Africa Drought Relief during Severe Crisis | Xtrafrica

UN Faces Major Funding Shortfall for Southern Africa Drought Relief during Severe Crisis Ayize claire Aug 6, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link A farmer in southern Africa struggles with drought conditions, trying to harvest crops on parched land affected by the El Niño climate phenomenon. The U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) is facing significant challenges in raising the necessary funds to combat the severe drought affecting southern Africa. As of Tuesday, the WFP has secured only $80 million of the $400 million needed to aid seven countries in the region. This shortfall highlights the increasingly difficult funding environment for humanitarian aid. The drought, the worst in decades, has led Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe to declare states of disaster. The El Niño climate phenomenon, which alters global weather patterns, has been a significant factor, bringing extreme temperatures, dry spells, and reducing crop yields. According to WFP spokesperson Thomson Phiri, about 70% of the southern African population, who rely on rain-fed agriculture, saw their harvests devastated by the lack of rains. This situation has dramatically increased the region's food needs. The WFP's current goal is to use the funds raised to support 5.9 million of the 27 million food-insecure people in the region until the next harvest season in 2025. Efforts include sourcing white grain from Tanzania, South Africa, and Latin America to feed affected communities. Despite notable donor contributions, the demand for food assistance remains exceptionally high, outpacing available resources during this historical drought. Donor support has waned due to budget cuts, leaving many in southern Africa facing the compounded effects of the drought and reduced aid. Reena Ghelani, the UN's climate crisis coordinator for the El Niño response, emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting a sharp increase in hunger across the region. She warned that climate change is likely to bring prolonged dry spells and frequent droughts in the coming years, exacerbating food insecurity. This dire situation calls for immediate and substantial action to address the growing needs of millions affected by the drought and to mitigate the long-term impacts of climate change on the region. • How Combating Climate Change Can Impact Economy in Kenya | Xtrafrica

How Combating Climate Change Can Impact Economy in Kenya Ayize claire Oct 12, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link President William Ruto delivers a speech Kenya’s susceptibility to climate change is on the high end as it affects sensitive sub-sectors such as agriculture and tourism. About seventy five percent of the population engages in agriculture which is already getting some shocks with therein extreme events such as droughts and floods and there are therefore some estimations that such a position could give one in GDP losses of up to 7% by the year 2050, if no adaptation measures are taken. William Ruto has been calling for the need for environmental care, through tree growing to take care of climate change scourge "If there is a programme that will make a meaningful impact on food security, it is environmental protection," he remarked, highlighting the need to protect key water sources for agriculture. On another note, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya attracted attention because of his remarks about climate change in the world, something that attracted a lot of criticism on social media. Defending his remarks, Salasya asserted, "I was not elected to talk about climate change." Kenya has its own share of so much risk but there are also elements of economic opportunity in the climate debate. The country has set a timeline of 2030 whereby its electricity grid will be entirely run on renewable energy. This is being achieved through initiatives such as the Lake Turkana Wind Power project as it reduces dependence on conventional energy sources and also creates employment. Performance of agriculture is anticipated to support the nation economically over years to come due to investments on changing from the conventional methods of farming to climate smart agriculture, however, Kenya has a financing shortfall of 62 billion US dollar in mainstreaming climate action for the year 2030. Resilience building and the enhancement of climate-sustainable economic growth will require additional funding of climate-resilient economic activities and development financing particularly in Kenya. Kidum stated that he was unaware of the branding until after the concert. “They told me their outfits had their names on them, but I didn’t pay attention to anything else,” Kidum explained in an interview. He noted that it was only after the concert that he began receiving messages criticizing the attire.
