- How I Named Wizkid – Banky W Shares Story in New Video (Watch) | Xtrafrica
How I Named Wizkid – Banky W Shares Story in New Video (Watch) Drew Mcgee Nov 8, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Nigerian singer Banky W recently shared in a viral video how he came up with the name Wizkid for the Grammy Award-winning artist now known as BigWiz. Banky W, who initially signed Wizkid to his record label EME before Wizkid established his own StarBoy Entertainment, described Wizkid's early days in the music industry. Banky referred to Wizkid as a "studio rat," explaining that, for a long period, Wizkid couldn't afford studio time. He recounted how Wizkid would spend entire days at any studio that would let him stay, hoping the producer might eventually give him 15 to 30 minutes to record since he couldn’t pay for his own sessions. Banky further explained that the name "WIZ" came from Wizkid’s ability to quickly create music. He noted that Wizkid could simply listen to a beat, and almost instantly, the song would be ready. "He doesn’t need to write it, he’s a genius," Banky said. WATCH VIDEO In Banky's words: “Wizkid for a long time in his life was not fortunate enough to afford or pay for studio time... he was a studio rat as he will go to any studio where they will let him hang out... he would hang out all day... just wait, hope and pray for the end of the day for the engineers and producers to just take pity on him... He did not have time to think about what to write at the moment, so that became his process." Banky praised Wizkid's remarkable songwriting speed, describing how Wizkid could listen to music, start freestyling a melody, and quickly create a song that the world would love. This spontaneous, genius-level creativity was what inspired the name "Wiz." - Joel Embiid Secures 3-Year, $193 Million Contract Extension with the Philadelphia 76ers | Xtrafrica
Joel Embiid Secures 3-Year, $193 Million Contract Extension with the Philadelphia 76ers Prince Jean Sep 21, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Joel Embiid Signs 3-Year, $193 Million Extension with 76ers, Aims for First NBA Title. Credit:gettyimages Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, the reigning NBA MVP and an Olympic gold medalist, has signed a 3-year, $193 million contract extension, securing his future with the team through the end of the decade. The deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 season, according to sources. Embiid, 30, who has expressed his desire to stay with the franchise for the rest of his career, shared the news on Instagram with a photo of him signing the contract alongside 76ers owner Josh Harris. In his post, Embiid reaffirmed his commitment to Philadelphia: “Philadelphia is home. I want to be here the rest of my career. You guys deserve a championship, and I believe we’re just getting started.” Already a seven-time NBA All-Star, Embiid remains in the second year of a $196 million extension he signed in 2021. This new deal makes him the third key player to secure a major contract with the 76ers this offseason. Paul George, lured from the Los Angeles Clippers, signed a four-year, $212 million contract, while Tyrese Maxey, the NBA’s Most Improved Player, agreed to a five-year, $204 million extension. The franchise is counting on this new "Big Three" to compete for an NBA title, a feat the Sixers haven't achieved since 1983. Despite his impressive accolades—including five All-NBA Team honors, three All-Defensive Team selections, and two NBA scoring titles—Embiid has yet to lead the 76ers past the second round of the playoffs. He’s also struggled with injuries throughout his career, never playing more than 68 games in a season. Last season, he averaged 34.7 points but played in only 39 games. Team owner Josh Harris lauded Embiid’s legacy, calling him “one of the greatest Sixers of all time” and essential to the franchise’s championship aspirations. Harris added, “Joel is an elite two-way player with a rare combination of size, strength, and athleticism. We are ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come.” Drafted third overall by the 76ers in 2014, Embiid’s career has been marked by significant achievements. In 433 games, all of which he started, Embiid has averaged 27.9 points on 50.4% shooting, 11.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 blocked shots per game. He ranks first in franchise history in scoring average (27.9 PPG) and holds top-five spots in blocked shots, triple-doubles, and total points scored. Off the court, Embiid’s journey is equally remarkable. Born in Cameroon, he began playing basketball as a teenager after a friend pointed out that his 7-foot frame would be better suited for basketball than soccer. Embiid was scouted at a basketball camp in Yaoundé by fellow Cameroonian and NBA veteran Luc Mbah a Moute, who helped him move to the U.S. to pursue his career. Despite missing his first two NBA seasons due to injuries, Embiid has risen to become one of the most dominant big men in the league. With a new contract in hand and a determined mindset, Embiid remains focused on delivering a long-awaited NBA title to Philadelphia. As he stated, "There is a lot more work to do. We’re just getting started." - Adebayor: Helping Others is More Fulfilling Than Scoring Goals | Xtrafrica
Adebayor: Helping Others is More Fulfilling Than Scoring Goals Prince Jean Oct 24, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Emmanuel Adebayor during his illustrious football career, now focused on empowering the next generation in Togo through education and development initiatives. Credit:gettyimages Emmanuel Adebayor will mark the end of his football career with a testimonial match in Togo on Sunday. The event will see top African and European footballers like Samuel Eto'o, Jay-Jay Okocha, and the Toure brothers come together to celebrate his achievements, including leading Togo to their first and only FIFA World Cup appearance. Now, Adebayor wants to help the next generation in his homeland, driven by his own upbringing and the traumatic 2010 attack on the Togo national team. "Helping people is more fulfilling than scoring in the Premier League or Champions League," the 40-year-old said in an interview with BBC Sport Africa. As a child, Adebayor couldn’t walk for the first few years of his life. His family sought help through spiritual leaders in Ghana, and a football changed everything. One day, a ball rolled into the church, and young Adebayor ran to it. That was the moment his relationship with football began. After starting his career in Togo, Adebayor moved to French club Metz, then to Monaco, before joining Arsenal in 2006. Signing for Arsenal was one of the highlights of his career, especially since his idol was Nwankwo Kanu, and he got to wear Kanu’s number 25 jersey. Adebayor’s standout performances for Arsenal, particularly in 2008, earned him the African Footballer of the Year award, making him the only Togolese player to receive that honor. In 2006, the same year Adebayor joined Arsenal, Togo qualified for their first World Cup, a remarkable achievement for such a small nation. Adebayor scored 11 goals in qualifying, leading the team past the likes of Senegal. While Togo’s World Cup campaign in Germany was disappointing, just making it to the tournament was a major accomplishment. Tragedy struck in 2010 when the Togo team bus was attacked by gunmen in Angola ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. The attack left two people dead, and the survivors, including Adebayor, were deeply affected. "It’s something you never forget," Adebayor said, recalling the trauma from that day. Despite playing for top clubs in Europe, Adebayor won just one major trophy, the Copa del Rey with Real Madrid in 2011. He looks back on his career with no regrets, grateful for the experiences, and continues to stay in touch with managers like Tim Sherwood, who reignited his form at Tottenham in 2013. Since retiring, Adebayor has focused on his foundation, which he set up to help children in Togo access education and opportunities. He hopes to continue making an impact, with plans to open an Emmanuel Adebayor University in the near future. Ethiopia to Save $4.9 Billion Through Debt Restructuring, Says State Minister Ayize claire Aug 3, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ethiopia is set to receive $4.9 billion in relief from debt repayments upon the completion of its long-delayed restructuring process, State Finance Minister Eyob Tekalign announced on Friday. The East African nation, which became the third economy on the continent to default on its debt at the end of 2023, aims to reinstate the debt overhaul after securing a new financing program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) this week. Debt Restructuring Agreements "We will sign and finalize agreements with each individual creditor country over the course of the next few months," Eyob told Reuters, highlighting the anticipated savings for Ethiopia as a result of the restructuring efforts. The country's total external debt was reported at $28.38 billion as of March this year, according to data from the finance ministry. Economic Reforms and Eurobond Restructuring In a televised speech on Thursday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed discussed recent economic reforms, emphasizing that the expected savings include $200 million from restructuring the nation's $1 billion Eurobond. Eyob elaborated that this could be achieved through a "nominal reduction" of the bond's value as part of the overall debt rework. Currency Reforms and IMF Support Prime Minister Abiy also defended the recent move to a market-determined foreign exchange rate, asserting that it was designed to close the gap between the official and black market rates, rather than devalue the currency. On Monday, the central bank allowed the Ethiopian birr to float freely, meeting a key condition for securing IMF support. Business and Industry Thika Cloth Mills Boosts Kenya’s Cotton Industry .
