Europa League: Osimhen Could Have Been a Game-Changer for Galatasaray Prince Jean Oct 4, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Manager of Rigas FS, Viktors Morozs. Credit:gettyimages Rigas FS head coach, Viktors Morozs, acknowledged that his team would have faced a tougher challenge if Victor Osimhen had been on the pitch during their UEFA Europa League clash against Galatasaray on Thursday, according to a report by DAILY POST. The Latvian team fought brilliantly against a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw. Osimhen, who missed the game due to a muscular issue, could have had a huge impact, Morozs confessed. "It would have been a different story if Osimhen had played. He would have brought more strength to Galatasaray," Morozs told Haber Global. "Osimhen is a very different kind of player compared to Icardi. I believe he could have broken through our defense more easily." He added that the Nigerian striker's absence was a setback for Galatasaray, noting, "Playing against a forward like him would have been tough. His absence was definitely a blow for them. Osimhen is strong and dangerous, and it would have been difficult for us had he played tonight." Nigeria’s D’Tigress Breaks into FIBA Women’s Top 10 After Historic Olympic Feat Prince Jean Aug 30, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Nigeria Makes History by Breaking into the Top 10 in FIBA Women’s Rankings. Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has once again made headlines following their remarkable performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The team has achieved a historic milestone by climbing four spots in the FIBA Women’s World Rankings, breaking into the top 10 for the first time with 631 points, securing the eighth position globally while maintaining their dominance as Africa’s number one team. D’Tigress made history at Paris 2024 by securing their first-ever Group Phase victory, winning two games for the first time, and becoming the first African nation—male or female—to reach the Olympic Quarter-Finals. This latest achievement further cements their place in history as the first African national team, across both genders, to be ranked in the top 10 of the FIBA World Rankings. The Nigerian team’s historic run began with a stunning opening day victory against Australia in Lille. Although Australia went on to win the bronze medal, the Opals also moved up to second place in the rankings, adding to their success. The USA continues to dominate the rankings, retaining the top spot after winning gold at the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament in Paris 2024. The USA’s victory marks their 10th title overall and 8th consecutive win, keeping them at the pinnacle of the rankings with 883.3 points. France, buoyed by passionate home support, secured third place in the FIBA World Rankings after an exhilarating run to the Paris 2024 Final. Despite narrowly missing out on gold, losing by just one point to the USA, France earned a silver medal, equaling their best-ever Olympic result. Germany also made a strong impression during their Olympic debut, advancing to the Quarter-Finals after winning two Group Phase games. This success saw them climb eight spots to 13th in the rankings. Serbia, another Quarter-Finalist in Paris 2024, saw their ranking improve from 10th to 9th place, marking a significant achievement for the team. Recent success at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Pre-Qualifying Tournaments in Mexico and Rwanda led to notable ranking shifts. Czechia, who won the tournament in Mexico City, secured a place in the World Cup 2026 Qualifiers and climbed two places to 21st. Hungary, victorious in Kigali, moved up one spot to 15th. Rwanda, the host nation of the Kigali tournament, recorded the biggest leap in the Top 100, soaring 12 places to 62nd. Despite Korea’s strong performance in Mexico , reaching the final, their rise in points was not enough to outpace Germany’s remarkable ascent. #NigeriaD’Tigress #Paris2024Olympics #AfricanBasketball #FIBAWorldCup2026Qualifiers Kenyan Federation Elections Sammy Owino Pledges to Eradicate Corruption in Kenyan Football English Premier League Amorim Calls for Bravery as Manchester United Prepares to Face Arsenal AFCON Build_Ups Uganda Allocates Shs350 Billion for CHAN 2025 Preparations English Premier League Ipswich Captain Faces Backlash After Declining Rainbow Armband Related Posts Sammy Owino Pledges to Eradicate Corruption in Kenyan Football Kenyan Federation Elections . Ethiopia Secures $3.4 Billion IMF Financing Agreement Amid Economic Reforms Ayize claire Jul 30, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Night time view of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Ethiopia and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have reached an agreement for a new financing program worth $3.4 billion. This deal, announced by the IMF on Monday, aims to support Ethiopia's economic recovery and address financial challenges. In a significant move to secure IMF support, Ethiopia's central bank floated the national currency, the birr, on Monday. This step is also crucial for advancing the country's long-overdue debt restructuring efforts. Ethiopia, which has been grappling with high inflation and persistent foreign currency shortages, became the third African nation to default on its debt in recent years, following similar defaults by other economies on the continent. Negotiations between Ethiopia and the IMF began last year, aiming to establish a new lending program. The previous IMF-supported program, agreed upon in 2019, was abandoned due to the conflict in the northern Tigray region, which concluded with a peace deal in November 2022. Initial reports from Reuters indicated that Ethiopia was seeking approximately $3.5 billion in IMF financing. The newly reached agreement will facilitate an immediate disbursement of around $1 billion to Ethiopia. As Africa's second-most populous country, Ethiopia's request for debt restructuring under the Group of 20's Common Framework process in early 2021 faced delays due to the two-year civil war in Tigray. The Ethiopian government has recently implemented several economic reforms linked to the IMF negotiations. Earlier this month, the government adopted an interest rate-based monetary policy, demonstrating its commitment to economic stabilization and reform. The new IMF financing agreement is expected to provide crucial support for Ethiopia as it navigates its economic challenges and seeks sustainable growth. - Libya's Oil Production Halves Amid Escalating Political Standoff | Xtrafrica
Libya's Oil Production Halves Amid Escalating Political Standoff louis Buyisiwe Aug 30, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Libya's oil output drops by over 50% as a political standoff over central bank control halts key exports Libya's oil production has sharply declined by more than half, with over 700,000 barrels per day taken offline due to an intensifying political standoff between rival factions. This dramatic drop, confirmed by the National Oil Corporation (NOC), comes as tensions over control of the Central Bank of Libya and oil revenues escalate, jeopardizing a period of relative peace that has lasted four years. The NOC reported that Libya’s average oil output fell to 591,024 barrels on August 28, down from about 1.18 million barrels per day in July, with total losses amounting to 1.5 million barrels worth approximately $120 million over three days. The current crisis, rooted in the country's east-west political divide, has led to the shutdown of key oil ports in Libya’s Oil Crescent, including Es Sidra, Brega, Zueitina, and Ras Lanuf. These closures have halted exports, significantly impacting the country’s oil sector. Production at several major oilfields, including those controlled by the Waha Oil Company , has been either reduced or completely halted, contributing to the steep decline in Libya's overall output. Analysts, including those from Rapidan Energy Group, estimate that production losses could reach up to 1 million barrels per day and could persist for weeks. The impasse began after the Tripoli-based Presidency Council attempted to dismiss Central Bank Governor Sadiq al-Kabir, a move that was rejected by the eastern House of Representatives and forces loyal to military commander Khalifa Haftar. This standoff has now led to a blockade, with eastern factions vowing to maintain it until al-Kabir is reinstated. The situation recalls previous instances where oil blockades were used as political leverage, notably the eight-month halt in 2020 that ended only after Haftar's failed assault on Tripoli. As Libya remains divided between east and west, this latest crisis threatens to further destabilize the nation and its crucial oil industry. Prepaid Electricity Meter Upgrade Sunday Deadline Sparks Chaos in South Africa Mbeki edmond Nov 23, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Thousands rush to update prepaid electricity meters before Sunday’s deadline. Thousands of South Africans are rushing to update their prepaid electricity meters before the critical deadline on Sunday at 8:15 PM. The update is part of a national Key Revision Number (KRN) upgrade to avoid a date rollover issue that will prevent new electricity tokens from being processed. Eskom, however, caused confusion with claims that unupdated meters would require costly replacements, priced at R12,000. The Standard Transfer Specification Association (STSA), which oversees the metering standard, disputes this. According to the STSA, customers will still be able to update their meters after the deadline by entering a "key change token" once credit is depleted. "Meter replacement is not expected in these cases," said an STSA representative. Despite assurances, long queues formed at Eskom and municipal offices, with one tragic incident in Soweto where a man reportedly died waiting in line. Eskom urges customers not to queue unnecessarily, stating, "People just need to buy electricity," according to distribution chief Monde Bala. The utility assures that the vending system errors have been resolved. The final cutoff for updating meters to the new standard is next May. Meanwhile, data shows most paying customers are already updated, though a significant number of illegal connections remain unaccounted for. Customers unsure about their meter status are advised to check with local authorities. The urgency continues as the clock ticks toward the Sunday deadline.
