Bishop Smaragde Mbonyintege, the former Bishop of Kabgayi Diocese, has spoken out against comedians who impersonate priests and bishops. He called on the government to take swift action to address this growing issue, especially on social media platforms. In an interview with IGIHE , he said the Catholic Church sees such acts as harmful to the Church's image and believes they should not be allowed in the name of freedom of expression. He explained, “This is something we need to discuss with the government. If we are working together, anything that destroys the Church will ultimately harm the country in the long run. While freedom is important, there must also be limits to protect people's rights.” The bishop expressed concern that those engaging in these acts prioritize making money without considering the damage they cause to society, both to the government and the Church. He added, “If they don't act, it won't stop us from continuing our mission. But in the end, the consequences of such behavior fall more heavily on the government, not just the Church.” When asked why the Church does not openly condemn such actions, Bishop Mbonyintege stated that the Church consistently speaks out about these issues but does so in its own way.
