Movie fans are eagerly waiting for Captain America: Brave New World, the fourth installment in the Captain America series, set to release on February 14, 2025. However, lucky audiences in Kigali will get an exclusive early screening on February 13, 2025. This highly anticipated movie is directed by Nigerian filmmaker Julius Onah, who has made a name for himself in Hollywood. The 42-year-old has previously directed films such as The Girl Is in Trouble (2015), The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), and Luce (2019). With a runtime of 118 minutes, Captain America: Brave New World follows Captain America: Civil War (2016), a blockbuster that grossed over $180 million. The new film will premiere in the United States on February 14, 2025, but will first be shown in Kigali at Canal Olympia, a venue known for hosting exclusive film screenings. EFF's leadership race heats up as grassroots favor Ndlozi for deputy president Dec 13, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ndlozi with Julius Malema EFF party president This weekend, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are expected to re-elect Julius Malema as party president for a third consecutive term, continuing his leadership since the EFF’s founding in 2013. Malema, known for his firm leadership style, will lead the party again, but this time without Floyd Shivambu as his deputy. Shivambu vacated the position after leaving the EFF to join the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, founded by former President Jacob Zuma. Shivambu has since risen within the MK Party to serve as its secretary-general. The EFF’s elective conference is being held at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Soweto, Johannesburg. The three-day event will decide the party’s new leadership, with the position of deputy president now open for contest. Speculation suggests that Malema supports Godrich Gardee, the party's secretary-general, for the deputy president role. However, many EFF members, including those in the Central Command Team (CCT), are pushing for Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, the former spokesperson, to take the position. They believe Ndlozi is the best candidate for the job. Tensions surrounding leadership choices are not new to the EFF. Challenging Malema has often led to expulsions. For example, in October, EFF Student Command member Kganki Mphahlele was expelled following a social media dispute with Malema. Mphahlele criticized Malema’s rumored preference for Gardee and voiced support for Ndlozi, claiming grassroots members favored him. Some delegates have accused Malema of trying to impose Gardee as deputy president, while Ndlozi appears to have widespread support. However, Ndlozi’s absence from Thursday’s registration at UJ Soweto and the Central Command Team meeting has raised questions. Reports even suggest that Ndlozi may have been barred from attending the assembly. Despite these developments, many knowledgeable party delegates continue to back Ndlozi, arguing he represents the will of the majority. Court Denies Dele Farotimi Bail Over Alleged Cyberbullying Charges Dec 11, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Human rights activist Dele Farotimi Human rights activist Dele Farotimi was denied bail by an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court following his arrest in Lagos and subsequent arraignment on a 16-count charge of defamation. The charges stem from claims in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System , accusing Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, of judicial corruption. Farotimi pleaded not guilty. Legal Dispute Over Representation The case took a dramatic turn when Farotimi’s counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, was asked to step down. The police prosecutor argued that Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) cannot represent clients in magistrate courts, citing a 2014 Magistrate’s Law. This was contested by Olumide-Fusika, who referenced a different legal precedent supporting representation by any qualified lawyer in criminal cases. The court ultimately ruled against him, allowing another lawyer, Taiwo Adeniji, to proceed with the bail application. Adeniji argued that the charges were bailable under Nigeria’s constitution, but the prosecutor opposed, claiming the application lacked merit. Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun postponed the bail ruling to December 20 due to prolonged legal disagreements. Tension Outside Courtroom Supporters of Farotimi and pro-Afe Babalola groups clashed outside the courtroom. Farotimi’s supporters vowed to stage protests in Lagos, alleging rights violations, while the opposing group called for order. Atiku and Seadogs Decry Human Rights Abuse Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned Farotimi’s detention as a misuse of power, calling it a “poignant reflection of impunity.” In a statement on International Human Rights Day, he criticized the government’s use of cyberbullying laws to silence critics, urging leaders to uphold citizens' constitutional rights. Similarly, the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) marched in Jos to protest growing human rights abuses. The group criticized Farotimi’s harsh bail conditions, describing the N50 million requirement as excessive. Chairman Charles Uwechia emphasized the need for public awareness of rights, stating, “Farotimi is not a criminal; this is a civil matter.” The ongoing case underscores concerns about judicial processes and human rights in Nigeria.
