  • Ethiopia's electrical Power Export Surpasses $1 Billion in 18 Months

Ethiopia's electrical Power Export Surpasses $1 Billion in 18 Months Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Mar 17, 2024 Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Etefa in an interview Addis Ababa, March 15, 2024 — Ethiopia has achieved a significant milestone by generating over $1 billion in revenue from electricity exports to neighboring countries within the last 18 months, ending in the 2015 Ethiopian fiscal year. The announcement was made by Water and Energy Minister Habtamu Etefa in an interview. This financial achievement underscores Ethiopia's emerging status as a key player in the regional energy sector, promoting integration and cooperation among East African nations. The minister pointed out a consistent 15% annual increase in demand for Ethiopian electricity, indicating a robust market and the country's reliability as an energy supplier. Ethiopia's strategic partnerships, notably with Sudan, Djibouti, and Kenya, have been pivotal in this success. The Ethiopia-Kenya power grid interconnection is particularly noteworthy, enhancing the scope for electricity exports to reach as far as South Africa through the East African Power Pool. Highlighting Ethiopia's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly energy production, Minister Habtamu emphasized that 93% of the nation's electricity comes from hydropower. Plans are underway to expand the export market to include South Sudan, further establishing Ethiopia as a cornerstone of clean energy in the region . • Kenya to Grant Uganda's National Oil Firm Import License to end interstate oil dispute.

Kenya to Grant Uganda's National Oil Firm Import License to end interstate oil dispute. Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Mar 28, 2024 In a significant development aimed at mending frayed diplomatic relations and enhancing regional energy cooperation, Kenya is poised to issue an import license to the Uganda National Oil Company (Unoc). This move comes after a protracted dispute that escalated to a regional court, impacting diplomatic relations between Kenya and Uganda. Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir announced that the permit, allowing Unoc to import fuel directly via the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), is underway. "Unoc's forthcoming license marks a pivotal step in our collaboration, leveraging our pipeline as a mutual opportunity," Chirchir stated, emphasizing the strategic use of KPC's infrastructure without compromising its transporter role. This development follows the withdrawal of a legal challenge at the High Court in Machakos against Unoc's licensing, signaling a potential resolution next month. The license will enable Unoc to procure fuel from Vitol Bahrain, transitioning to direct imports that could reshape the regional oil landscape. Also read: Uganda-Tanzania Crude Pipeline Advances with New Coating Facility The resolution of this licensing issue is expected to conclude the legal battle at the regional court, averting further diplomatic strain. Unoc's direct importation from Vitol Bahrain is anticipated to disrupt the traditional fuel supply chain, impacting the revenues of Kenyan oil marketing firms that have historically serviced Uganda. Uganda's shift towards direct imports through Unoc, initiated shortly after Kenya's fuel import agreement with Gulf oil giants to support the Kenyan shilling, underscores the evolving dynamics in East African energy trade. Despite potential challenges for local marketers, KPC's infrastructure utilization by Unoc ensures sustained operational revenue for Kenya. With Uganda importing approximately 2.5 billion liters of petroleum annually, the integration of Unoc into Kenya's oil infrastructure is poised to enhance the efficiency and reliability of fuel supply in the region, fostering stronger economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations. Kenya's decision to license Unoc for direct fuel imports heralds a new era in East African energy cooperation, promising to stabilize regional relations and optimize the use of shared infrastructure. This strategic move not only addresses the immediate logistical and legal challenges but also sets the stage for future collaboration in energy and beyond, reinforcing the bonds of partnership between Kenya and Uganda . Mali Junta Reauthorises Political Activities Suspended in April Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ayize claire Jul 11, 2024 Colonel Assimi Goita, head of Mali's military junta, seen with fellow soldiers during a public appearance. The junta has reauthorised political activities that were previously suspended in April amid accusations of subversion. Mali's ruling junta has reauthorised the activities of political parties and political associations that were suspended earlier this year. This suspension, initiated in April, was justified by accusations that political parties were engaging in "sterile discussions" and "subversion." The government, dominated by the military leaders who took power in a 2020 coup, announced the decision on Wednesday. "The government decided to lift the suspension that barred political parties and the activities of political associations," stated the council of ministers. Colonel Assimi Goita, head of the military government , previously defended the suspension, arguing that the political parties' actions posed a danger to an ongoing national "dialogue" concerning Mali's political future. The suspension occurred amid protests from political parties against the junta's decision to extend their stay in power beyond the March 2024 deadline for returning to civilian rule. Despite the boycott from the main parties and what remains of the opposition, the national dialogue proceeded with regime supporters. In May, these supporters recommended that the military remain in power for an additional two to five years and suggested that the current head of the junta be eligible to run in future presidential elections.
