Coastal Aviation’s Mafia timetable currently lists daily Dar es Salaam flights, including services taking about 30 to 35 minutes, but the airline tells passengers to confirm the complete schedule with reservations. Auric Air also advertises Mafia connections from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and southern safari areas. Search live inventory for the actual travel date rather than copying a timetable into a rigid plan. Small-aircraft baggage allowances can be tighter than international-airline limits. Divers should check the booked carrier’s current allowance, excess-baggage procedure and rules for regulators, lights and other specialist equipment before departure. The mainland sea route should be treated cautiously. In May 2026, The Citizen reported that MV Kilindoni had broken down , leaving residents dependent on smaller vessels. XTRAfrica found no authoritative, current timetable confirming dependable resumption by the verification date. Do not build an international connection around old blog schedules; reconfirm the vessel, departure point, ticketing and sea conditions locally. On Mafia, pre-arranged vehicle transfers are the easiest option between the airport, Kilindoni and Utende. Confirm whether a lodge quote is per person or per vehicle. Local taxis and three-wheelers can serve shorter trips, but road surfaces, lighting and availability vary. Arrange the return journey before a late outing rather than expecting an app-based ride. Ask whether the property lies inside the marine-park charging area, whether the dive centre is on site or independent, and whether meals are included. Romantic isolation becomes inconvenient when those details are unclear. Costs, Marine-Park Fees and Booking Questions Mafia is not automatically a cheap alternative to Zanzibar. Domestic flights, transfers, marine activities and protected-area charges can outweigh a modest room rate. Depending on tide and operator, alternatives can include a sandbank, mangroves, birding, a village walk or a resident-guided visit to heritage remains around Chole and Juani. These are not filler activities: they reveal the inhabited archipelago behind the underwater marketing. Ask who leads a village or heritage visit and how the fee benefits residents. Dress with ordinary community settings in mind, request permission before photographing people and do not fly a drone without checking national, protected-area and local restrictions.
