  • Explore how Pan-Africanism is evolving in the 21st century through economic integration, youth activism, cultural revival, and diaspora engagement. Pan-Africanism, a centuries-old political and cultural ideology rooted in the unity and liberation of African people, has transformed dramatically in the 21st century. Once symbolized by anti-colonial resistance and the formation of post-independence governments, Pan-Africanism today is reshaping itself through digital connectivity, economic integration, youth activism, and continental diplomacy. This evolution signifies not just a revival but a reinvention of Pan-African ideals to meet the demands of modern African realities. The origins of Pan-Africanism lie in the resistance against slavery, colonialism, and racial oppression. Pioneers like W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah, and Julius Nyerere laid the ideological foundation for African unity and solidarity among people of African descent across the globe. The formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 and later the African Union (AU) in 2002 marked institutional milestones in the Pan-African journey. However, post-independence Africa faced challenges, including internal conflicts, neocolonialism, and authoritarian regimes that often muted Pan-African aspirations. The 21st century, however, has ignited a resurgence with renewed purpose. One of the most significant expressions of modern Pan-Africanism is economic integration, led by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Launched in 2021, AfCFTA represents a Pan-African vision of creating a single market for goods and services across 54 countries. Over 1.3 billion consumers across Africa are now theoretically part of the same trade bloc. Digital trade protocols, infrastructure harmonization, and industrialization strategies are being prioritized to unify African economies. This economic Pan-Africanism is not just about removing tariffs, it is about creating inclusive prosperity and reducing Africa's dependence on external markets. Africa’s youth, which contributes to over 60% of the population, is at the forefront of a new wave of Pan-Africanism, fueled by technology, creativity, and social consciousness. Movements like #EndSARS in Nigeria, FeesMustFall in South Africa, and pro-democracy protests in Sudan and Senegal have transcended borders, uniting young Africans through common struggles. Pan-African identity is being reshaped through music (Afrobeats, Amapiano), film (Nollywood, Wakanda-inspired narratives), and digital storytelling. Pan-African identity is being reshaped through music (Afrobeats, Amapiano), film (Nollywood, Wakanda-inspired narratives), and digital storytelling. Platforms like Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube are now stages for continental dialogues on politics, culture, and development. This digital Pan-Africanism amplifies shared experiences and aspirations, connecting Kinshasa to Kigali, Accra to Addis Ababa. The African Union has undergone reforms to enhance its effectiveness in peacekeeping, electoral integrity, and policy enforcement. Though still facing limitations, the AU has: ADVERTISEMENT Introduced the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) to monitor governance. Strengthened its Peace and Security Council, with increased mediation efforts in conflict zones like the Sahel, Sudan, and eastern DRC. Advocated for Africa’s permanent representation on the UN Security Council, under the Ezulwini Consensus. Leaders like Ghana’s Nana Akufo-Addo have championed self-reliance, intra-African cooperation, and decolonization of global finance echoing Pan-Africanist visions of political sovereignty. Pan-Africanism in the 21st century is global. The African Union now formally recognizes the African Diaspora as the “sixth region” of the continent. Initiatives like Ghana’s “ Year of Return ” (2019) and “Beyond the Return” campaigns have reconnected African-Americans and Caribbeans with ancestral lands. Investment summits and citizenship pathways for diaspora communities are being expanded across West and East Africa. Influential figures like artists, scholars, and tech entrepreneurs are shaping transatlantic alliances, bringing new capital, ideas, and advocacy to the African project. Military coups, corruption, and elite capture undermine democratic consolidation and trust in institutions. External influence s like China, the U.S., the EU, and Russia continue to compete for Africa’s allegiance, testing the continent’s strategic autonomy. These challenges underscore the need for a Pan-Africanism that is not just symbolic but institutional, accountable, and people-driven. The 21st-century evolution of Pan-Africanism is not about replicating the past, it is about redefining unity for a multipolar, digital, and interconnected age. From grassroots activism to continental trade, from cultural revival to diasporic solidarity, Africa is crafting a modern Pan-Africanism that is pragmatic, inclusive, and forward-looking. As the world grapples with climate crises, economic shocks, and identity politics, Africa’s Pan-African experiment may yet provide a model of unity in diversity, resilience in adversity, and strength through solidarity. • Uvira Residents Decry Economic Toll of Burundi Border Closure

Residents and traders in Uvira, eastern DRC, say the closed Burundi border hurts business and separates families In Uvira, in the far east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, market vendors and families are begging for the reopening of the border with Burundi. A month after the withdrawal of M23/AFC fighters , gunfire has ceased, but the frontier remains shut and stalls sit empty. Residents say the closure has crippled the local economy and split families, with some children still on the Burundian side . On a visit to the Uvira market , South Kivu governor Jean‑Jacques Purusi listened as women urged him to “open the border.” He admitted to feeling powerless and said the province wants the frontier reopened quickly but must weigh security risks. According to Purusi, armed groups are still operating near Sange, about 30 kilometres from Uvira, and in the surrounding highlands, only around 15 kilometres away. Burundi’s foreign minister has likewise argued that conditions are not yet safe enough for a reopening. Until then, some residents are taking matters into their own hands. Nineteen‑year‑old Raphaël, who fled the Busuma refugee camp, described crossing Lake Tanganyika at night by dugout canoe because of poor conditions in the camp, where he said “there is a lot of misery”. His brothers were caught and remain in Gatumba on the Burundian side . Another man told how his group of fourteen attempted a clandestine crossing using jerrycans as floats; two of them never reached the shore. The governor has promised to keep pressing for the border to reopen once security improves. For now, the people of Uvira remain stuck between an economic crisis and lingering insecurity, waiting for Kinshasa and Bujumbura to agree that the crossing can safely resume . • Africa Prize 2026: Four Finalists and the Path to Wider Use

Meet the Africa Prize 2026 finalists from Kenya, Niger and South Africa, their technologies, announced funding and the challenges of wider deployment. JOHANNESBURG, 28 October 2026 — Four innovators from Kenya, Niger and South Africa are preparing to compete in the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation final today, with technologies addressing cardiac screening, patient monitoring, rural dialysis and nutrient recovery from urine. The Royal Academy of Engineering’s programme schedules the event for 17:30 South Africa Standard Time, or 18:30 East Africa Time . The winner is due to receive £50,000 , while the other three finalists will each receive £10,000 . This is a preview of the final and the projects behind it; the competition outcome remains ahead. They are Alice Muhuhu of Kenya with MoyoECG, Mamane Kabirou Ousseini of Niger with Likita Care, Naom Monari of Kenya with Renal Roads and Dyllon Randall of South Africa with Pee-Cycling. Their projects address healthcare access and resource recovery, with wider adoption depending on financing, maintenance and appropriate approvals. What the prize supports The official final page identifies the four finalists and the announced awards. A separate £5,000 One-to-Watch prize will be decided by an audience vote among the remaining shortlisted innovators. The competition follows eight months of training and mentoring. Its purpose is to help entrepreneurs commercialise engineering solutions, bringing business development alongside the technology itself. Prize money should be distinguished from the cost of a full expansion programme. An award can support a business, but the announced sum does not establish that a factory, clinical network or national service is fully financed. Nor does selection establish regulatory approval or prove every performance claim made for an innovation. Alice Muhuhu: cardiac screening closer to patients Kenyan doctor Alice Muhuhu founded Aurora Health Systems, the business behind MoyoECG. The organiser’s project profile describes a portable electrocardiogram platform that captures electrical signals from the heart and uses software to assist healthcare workers with interpretation and referrals. The intended setting is a clinic with limited access to specialist cardiac services or reliable connectivity. Bringing screening to that setting could change where a patient’s assessment begins, while referral and clinical care remain essential parts of the service. An award can support a business, but the announced sum does not establish that a factory, clinical network or national service is fully financed. ADVERTISEMENT Alice Muhuhu: cardiac screening closer to patients Kenyan doctor Alice Muhuhu founded Aurora Health Systems, the business behind MoyoECG. The Academy says the team aims to secure regulatory approvals, strengthen intellectual-property protection and expand deployment. Those are continuing objectives. A proposed network of more than 200 facilities should therefore be read as an expansion plan, rather than an achieved installation count. Mamane Kabirou Ousseini: equipment made and maintained in Niger Likita Care’s finalist profile describes an integrated medical-monitoring system developed in Niger by Mamane Kabirou Ousseini and co-founder Seydou Gnaly Ousmane. It combines hardware, clinical software and local fabrication. The proposition extends beyond selling a device. Training, installation and maintenance are part of the delivery model, addressing the problem of equipment becoming unusable when parts or technical support are difficult to obtain. ADVERTISEMENT The Academy reports that more than 70 monitoring units have been produced and deployed, with five medical centres using the system. These are organiser-reported deployment figures, rather than an independently audited national total. The stated next step is consolidation in Niger before expansion into neighbouring markets. For wider adoption, the useful measures include equipment uptime, repair turnaround, affordability and documented clinical performance. A purchase order and a device remaining reliably in service describe different stages of progress. Naom Monari: taking dialysis beyond fixed centres Kenyan nurse and entrepreneur Naom Monari’s Renal Roads project brings a dialysis clinic into a repurposed 40-foot shipping container mounted on a trailer. The Academy describes four dialysis machines, water treatment, plumbing, drainage, solar power and backup systems. The innovation is the mobile configuration and service model, rather than a claim that the dialysis machines themselves were newly invented. The unit rotates between communities and operates from local government health facilities, according to the project profile. This makes the operating arrangements as important as the vehicle: treatment schedules, trained staff, purified water, clinical oversight and reliable reimbursement all affect whether patients can continue receiving care. Wider coverage will require those systems to grow with the equipment. Dyllon Randall: turning a waste stream into useful products South African engineer Dyllon Randall co-founded Pee-Cycling with Caitlin Courtney. The Academy’s description explains a system that stabilises urine and uses pretreatment and reverse osmosis to produce concentrated liquid fertiliser and reusable water. In a 30 September report, the University of Cape Town described collection at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium through a Bidvest partnership. It reported 2,700 and 3,600 litres collected at two sporting events. Those quantities describe urine collected on specific occasions, not daily fertiliser production or sales. They nevertheless illustrate a practical issue for scale: securing a dependable collection stream and arrangements to move, process and use it. The next test is sustained use Across the four projects, engineering is being adapted to the conditions in which people need a service: limited specialist access, difficult maintenance, distance from treatment or wasteful resource flows. XTRAfrica’s earlier coverage of municipal innovation in South Africa examines a related challenge: connecting technology with public-service delivery. The Academy’s online event programme lists a 17:30–20:30 SAST session, with timings subject to change. Readers can follow its registration information for online attendance. The confirmed award result will identify this year’s winner. The longer test will be whether the support produces additional installations, dependable services, affordable access and documented outcomes for the people the technologies are designed to serve.
