- China Cancels Interest-Free Loans to Zimbabwe Amid Debt Crisis
China Cancels Interest-Free Loans to Zimbabwe Amid Debt Crisis Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Apr 18, 2024 The current President of Zimbabwe,Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa. In a recent move to aid Zimbabwe's escalating debt dilemma, China has announced the cancellation of an unspecified amount of the country's matured interest-free loans. As Zimbabwe grapples with a substantial publicly guaranteed debt of $17.7 billion as of September 2023, with $12.7 billion attributed to external creditors, this gesture comes at a crucial time. Zimbabwe, heavily reliant on Chinese financial support due to ineligibility for loans from institutions like the World Bank and IMF, faces significant economic challenges. The country’s debt scenario worsened following defaults on repayments that began in the early 2000s and continued through the governance changes post-Robert Mugabe's era. Despite China’s involvement, which positions it as Zimbabwe's largest non-Paris Club creditor, allegations of a potential "debt trap" have surfaced. Critics argue that the loans, primarily used for infrastructural developments like airport upgrades and power station expansions, may increase China's political leverage over Zimbabwe. However, Chinese officials, including China's ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, assert that the loans are not intended to foster dependency but to strengthen bilateral relations and economic cooperation. China's decision to write off these loans is part of a broader strategy to address accusations of "debt-trap diplomacy," emphasizing a policy of non-interference and mutual benefit in its African engagements. This development also aligns with China's commitment in August 2022 to provide 23 interest-free loans to 17 African nations, highlighting its ongoing support despite global economic and political challenges. This move by China could provide Zimbabwe a respite as it navigates its complex debt landscape, potentially easing the burden as the country works towards economic stabilization and growth. Rwanda's Sports Partnerships with Arsenal, PSG and Bayern Munich Boost Tourism and Global Presence Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Apr 2, 2024 Nyungwe forest one of most visited natural treasures of Rwanda Rwanda's financial engagements with top-tier football clubs Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), and FC Bayern Munich are strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing the country's tourism sector and global visibility, asserted President Paul Kagame. In a recent interview on April 1, 2024, with Radio 10 and Royal FM, Kagame emphasized the mutual benefits derived from these collaborations under the "Visit Rwanda" campaign, countering the criticisms of it being mere sponsorships. The partnerships have proven to be significantly fruitful, with many tourists citing the visibility of Rwanda in international football as a key factor in their decision to visit the country. Specifically, the alliance with FC Bayern Munich, established in August 2023, has markedly increased Rwanda's appeal in Germany. Kagame addressed the critics who question the appropriateness of such investments by a developing country like Rwanda, clarifying that these are not donations but profitable ventures for both parties. He highlighted the substantial growth in Rwanda's tourism revenue, which surged to $445 million in 2022 from $164 million in 2021, demonstrating the tangible benefits of these partnerships. This innovative approach to marketing and economic development showcases Rwanda's commitment to leveraging global platforms for national benefit, challenging traditional notions of aid and partnership . - Burkina Faso's Junta Conscripts Critics Amid Rising Repression
Burkina Faso's Junta Conscripts Critics Amid Rising Repression Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Jul 2, 2024 Burkina Faso's self-declared new leader Ibrahim Traore In Burkina Faso, the ruling military junta has been conscripting its critics, including prominent figures like Arouna Loure, a vocal opponent who was forcibly enlisted into military service. Loure, an anesthesiologist, received a conscription order in September last year. Shortly after, he was abducted from his hospital by armed men and taken to a military camp near Kaya, where he was held for three months. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have reported numerous similar cases, accusing the junta of kidnapping and conscripting dissenters. Despite these allegations, the junta has not publicly responded. Since March 2023, at least 19 such abductions have been verified by Reuters through interviews and public statements. The conscriptions appear to be part of junta leader Ibrahim Traore's strategy to suppress criticism since he seized power in a 2022 coup. Victims have described their conscription as arbitrary and punitive, often involving torture and forced military service. Some, including Loure, were later seen in military uniforms in social media posts. In addition to conscription, the junta has also been accused of extrajudicial killings and other human rights abuses, contributing to an ongoing climate of fear and repression in the country. Despite the junta's efforts, Burkina Faso continues to struggle with security issues and insurgent violence, leading to widespread civilian casualties. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko Urges African Youth to Stay in Africa Amid Tragic Migrant Boat Sinking Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ayize claire Jul 7, 2024 Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has called on the youth of Africa to remain on the continent following a tragic shipwreck off the coast of Mauritania. The incident, which involved a migrant boat attempting to reach Spain's Canary Islands, resulted in nearly 90 deaths. The boat had departed from Niodior, on the Senegal-Gambia border, carrying 170 passengers. In a speech at Gaston Berger University in Saint Louis, Sonko emphasized that the future lies in Africa, not in migration. "The future of the world is in Africa," he stated. He urged young people to recognize the continent's potential for significant growth and progress, asserting that Africa should drive global growth over the next 50 years. Sonko stressed that Africans must lead this development, rejecting the exploitation of natural resources by external entities. Three Senegalese NGOs have called on the Dakar authorities to provide better opportunities for young people to deter them from seeking dangerous migration routes. The Senegalese Navy has increased efforts to intercept migrant boats and rescue those in distress, with recent operations saving hundreds of people. The Atlantic migration route remains perilous due to strong currents and overcrowded, often unseaworthy boats. Despite the risks, it is increasingly used by migrants due to heightened surveillance in the Mediterranean. Sonko's appeal underscores the need for internal development and opportunities to prevent such tragedies and harness Africa's potential. - MPs Criticize UK Government's Rwanda Asylum Scheme as Infeasible and Costly
MPs Criticize UK Government's Rwanda Asylum Scheme as Infeasible and Costly Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ayize claire May 30, 2024 MPs gather in the House of Commons ahead of the second vote on the emergency Rwanda migrant deportation bill in London The UK government's plan to relocate asylum seekers to Rwanda lacks a credible implementation strategy, according to a scathing report by the Public Accounts Committee. The Home Office's accommodation plans have fallen "woefully short of reality," with costs spiraling far beyond initial estimates. One site alone has cost almost 10 times the projected £5m, totaling £49m. Since June 2022, the government has spent £310m on the scheme, with £290m allocated to Rwanda. Despite this significant expenditure, no flights are expected before the upcoming elections, as stated by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The National Audit Office revealed that the total cost of housing over 50,000 asylum seekers in the UK has also been substantial. Detention for Rwanda flights began last month, but immigration judges have since released at least 24 detainees due to unclear timetables. The government has not disclosed the number of successful bail applications for "operational reasons." MPs criticized the Home Office's lack of transparency and practical planning, expressing doubt in its ability to execute the Rwanda partnership effectively. The committee highlighted the significant overspending on new asylum accommodation sites, such as RAF Wethersfield and RAF Scampton, compared to keeping migrants in hotels. In response, Home Secretary James Cleverly emphasized the necessity of the Rwanda scheme to deter illegal immigration, while Labour's Yvette Cooper condemned the plan as ineffective and a waste of taxpayer money. - Deadly Clan Clashes Erupt in Central Somalia, Leaving 55 Dead
Deadly Clan Clashes Erupt in Central Somalia, Leaving 55 Dead Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ayize claire Jun 10, 2024 A violent clash between two clans in central Somalia has resulted in the deaths of at least 55 people and injuries to 155 others, according to residents and medical officials. The conflict erupted over the weekend between the Dir and Marihan clans in Abudwaq and Herale towns, over control of grazing land and water points. The federal government of Somalia, already grappling with violence from the Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab group, is now facing the additional challenge of clan-based conflicts. Farah Nur, a clan elder from Herale, expressed frustration over the delayed intervention by government forces. "Government forces came late. Unfortunately, 55 people died, this includes both clans," he said. "It was easy to stop (the fight) but it didn't happen. The situation got out of hand and spread like a wildfire." Medical personnel from hospitals in Herale, Abudwaq, and nearby towns reported treating 115 wounded individuals. Those who lost their lives were buried immediately by their communities. The conflict is believed to have deeper roots, with suspicions that al Shabaab may have played a role in inciting the violence. Ahmed Shire Falagle, a security adviser to the president of Galmudug state, noted, "We believe al Shabaab is indirectly behind this strange war. These are two brotherly clans that jointly used to defeat al Shabaab." The fighting has temporarily ceased following the arrival of federal government soldiers, though the atmosphere remains tense. "There is (a) ceasefire but the mood is not good. A permanent ceasefire is needed," said Sadia Hussein, a mother of four from Abudwaq. As Somalia continues to navigate its complex security landscape, the need for effective and timely intervention in such conflicts is more critical than ever to prevent further loss of life and to maintain stability in the region. The attack has not only shocked local communities but has also drawn condemnation from international bodies and human rights organizations. According to a recent report by the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO), the human rights landscape in Ituri has seen a marked deterioration since the year's start, primarily attributed to the increasing aggressions by CODECO. The United Nations peacekeeping mission has further highlighted the critical role of CODECO and the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in the surge of civilian casualties in the area, underscoring the urgent need for intensified peacekeeping efforts. Jules Ngongo, the spokesperson for the Ituri provincial governor, has vowed that the perpetrators will face justice, signaling a firm governmental stance against such acts of violence.
