U.S. Citizens Claim They Were Forced into Failed Congo Coup Attempt Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Jul 6, 2024 U.S. citizens Marcel Malanga and Benjamin Zalman-Polun, sit in a courtroom in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo Two U.S. citizens on trial in the Democratic Republic of Congo over a failed coup attempt in May testified on Friday, claiming they were coerced into participating under threat of death. On May 19, armed men briefly seized an office of the presidency in Kinshasa before security forces killed their leader, U.S.-based Congolese politician Christian Malanga. The coup attempt led to the arrest of over 50 individuals, including U.S., British, Canadian, Belgian, and Congolese nationals. Marcel Malanga, 22, and Benjamin Zalman-Polun, spoke for the first time during the trial, held in a military court in Kinshasa. Marcel, the son of the coup leader, asserted that his father had threatened to kill them if they did not comply. "Dad had threatened to kill us if we did not follow his orders," Marcel said, denying any involvement in the coup plot. He explained that he had come to Congo at his father's invitation and had not seen him since 2021. "I am American, I do not speak French or Lingala," he added. Zalman-Polun described himself as a long-time business associate of Christian Malanga , involved in mining activities in Swaziland and Mozambique, and claimed he had no knowledge or involvement in planning the coup. "I met Malanga in 2013. We always had relationships based on mining activities, he had never been so violent," Zalman-Polun told the court. The defendants face charges including illegal arms possession, criminal conspiracy, terrorism, and attempts to destabilize state institutions, some of which carry the death penalty or lengthy prison sentences. The trial has been adjourned until Monday, July 8. President Ruto Ready to Dialogue with Youth Protesting Finance Bill Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ayize claire Jun 24, 2024 President William Ruto and an angry youth on the right. In a move to address growing unrest, President William Ruto has expressed readiness to engage with young Kenyans protesting the new public finance bill. The bill, which proposes new taxes, has sparked widespread opposition, particularly among the youth. Last week saw thousands take to the streets across Kenya, demanding the bill's cancellation. Tragically, Thursday's demonstrations resulted in the deaths of two young protesters and left at least 200 injured, according to human rights organizations. On June 23, the protests continued in front of the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi. Kanana Koome, a student, voiced the group's concerns, stating, "This law imposes heavy taxes on Kenyans, leading to oppression and a poor quality of life for those less wealthy." Milan, a 24-year-old participant, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the bleak job prospects for graduates and urging action to prevent future generations from facing even harsher conditions. Protests also erupted in Nyahururu, 200 kilometers north of Nairobi, where President Ruto attended Sunday mass. Addressing the nation for the first time since the protests began, Ruto acknowledged the youth's mobilization and expressed his willingness to dialogue. "We will identify your problems and work together as a nation," he assured. The youth's determination and the president's response mark a critical juncture in Kenya's ongoing debate over the finance bill. As both sides prepare for dialogue, the nation watches closely to see how these discussions will shape the future of Kenya's fiscal policies. • "Kagame Generation" - Balancing Unconditional Presidential Support and a Desire for Change

"Kagame Generation" - Balancing Unconditional Presidential Support and a Desire for Change Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Mbeki edmond Jul 5, 2024 Supporters at a Kagame rally display expressions of uncertainty and reluctance. As the Rwandan presidential election approaches in July, Paul Kagame is set to run for his fourth term. A pivotal figure who ended the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis, Kagame positions himself as a paternal leader, ensuring stability and prosperity for millions. For 24 years, he has consistently been re-elected with no less than 93% of the vote. Most Rwandans, under thirty, have only known him as their president. However, many observers describe Kagame's regime, with only one tolerated dissident party, as authoritarian. While the overwhelming majority of the youth support the presidential party blindly, some seek change. This article explores the "Kagame Generation." As the July 15 presidential election nears, Paul Kagame’s Rwandan Patriotic Front (FPR) is actively campaigning. The president holds rallies before tens of thousands across the nation. Re-elected in 2017 with 98% of the vote, the FPR’s undisputed leader inspires trust and loyalty among his supporters. Under his leadership, Rwanda has developed significantly, becoming one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. However, the government faces regular accusations from human rights organizations of silencing critics. Only one opposition party, the Democratic Green Party, is allowed to contest him. At large FPR rallies, a majority of attendees are young, reflecting the nation's demographics. These under-30s did not experience the Tutsi genocide, which Kagame ended in 1994. They have only known one president. In this report, a team of journalists followed three young people representing the "Kagame Generation." They met Bénigne, a young party member who praises the president’s 24-year tenure and actively participates in party activities. In Kigali, the journalists also interviewed Mutesi, a young entrepreneur running an alcohol shop, who shares her story of striving in a country with a high youth unemployment rate of nearly 20%. Finally, they followed Jean-de-Dieu, leader of the youth in the Democratic Green Party, the only permitted opposition. These three young voices represent the generation heading to the polls in mid-July. • Address by President of the Rwandan Government in Exile Following Rwanda elections, Thomas Nahimana

Address by President of the Rwandan Government in Exile Following Rwanda elections, Thomas Nahimana Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Mbeki edmond Jul 15, 2024 Thomas Nahimana, President of the Rwandan Government in Exile, addressing the nation on July 15, 2024, regarding the ongoing struggle for transparent and fair elections in Rwanda. Counterfeit Elections and the Struggle for Transparent Governance Today, in Paris, President Thomas Nahimana of the Rwandan Government in Exile delivered a critical address regarding the state of elections in Rwanda, highlighting the ongoing struggle for transparent and fair electoral processes. Nahimana began by condemning the "counterfeit elections" that have plagued Rwanda, stating, "As we continue to endure these hard times, our country has been subjected to fraudulent elections in various ways." Nahimana emphasized the collective agreement among the Rwandan Government in Exile, supporters, and transparent Rwandans that genuine elections are crucial. He remarked, "Elections are a perfect way and a right given by the republic to its citizens, allowing them to choose leaders who aim for the common good without leading them back into tyranny." Journey Back to Rwanda Recounting the efforts of the exiled government, Nahimana mentioned the announcement made in September 2023 about their intention to return to Rwanda to participate in the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for July 15, 2024. "We showed you all the team that was supposed to move to Rwanda. We went to three different countries—France, South Africa, and Malawi—to introduce the heroes ready for this journey," Nahimana stated. Appeals for Electoral Reforms Ignored Nahimana reminded the audience of the letter sent to François Kalinda, the President of the Rwandan Senate, highlighting the flaws and dark elements in the electoral clauses aimed at maintaining President Kagame's power. "Not a single clause was corrected according to our appeal. The torture and mistreatment we faced is no longer bearable," Nahimana lamented. Past Attempts Thwarted Reflecting on previous attempts to participate in elections, Nahimana shared his personal experiences. "In 2016 and 2017, I tried to participate in presidential elections in Rwanda, but I was humiliated by Kagame's agents in Nairobi and Brussels, who denied me safe passage," he recounted. This, he said, was a deliberate effort to strip him of his rights to his homeland. Current Election Denial Nahimana revealed that he, along with 28 others ready to return for the elections, faced similar humiliation this time. "We were denied all basic requirements for participation in elections," he said. "Even other nationals who tried to submit their presidential participation cards were humiliated and abused beyond humanity." Condemnation of the Current Regime Nahimana strongly condemned the current regime, describing the elections as a "comedy" where the ruling party, FPR Inkotanyi, rotates around the circle alone. He declared, "What they called elections of July 15, 2024, were invalid and a complete scam. No thinking Rwandan should waste time giving value to the results." Nahimana criticized the elected leaders, calling them "colonialists" working only to satisfy their own greed. He issued a stark warning, "This is a friendly reminder—any time tomorrow or the day after, they will face charges for being accomplices in Kagame's genocidal regime." Call for Unity and Resistance Nahimana urged all Rwandans, both inside the country and in the diaspora, to unite against the regime. "We deny completely the tribalism that Kagame has made the regime's one-trick pony," he declared. "All Rwandans should give no space to the killers of Inkotanyi and work together with your government in exile to forge more ways to fight this band of bandits in power." In his concluding remarks, Nahimana encouraged continued advocacy for democracy and support for Rwandans striving for transparent governance. "Real elections will come. Keep approaching and comforting citizens, speak up for them, advise them, and advocate for them. Help them to forge projects that will benefit them in the future after we regain control of our country." Addressing journalists and politicians, Nahimana requested, "Let this new spirit of rejecting contempt from thugs be sensitized among the youth and the international community. Live free, secure, and hopeful for a future Rwanda. We shall overcome." Ramaphosa Forms Coalition Cabinet with Former Opposition Leader Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Griffith Sarah Jul 1, 2024 South African president Cyril Ramaphosa South African President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed former opposition leader John Steenhuisen as the new Minister of Agriculture on Sunday. This move comes after Ramaphosa's African National Congress (ANC) lost its parliamentary majority in the May 29 election, leading to the formation of a coalition government with the Democratic Alliance (DA) and other parties. The new cabinet, announced after protracted negotiations, includes ANC's Enoch Godongwana as Finance Minister and Ronald Lamola as Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, replacing Naledi Pandor. Gwede Mantashe retained his position as Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, but the energy portfolio was reassigned to Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. Ramaphosa emphasized the diversity and collaborative spirit of the new executive, expressing optimism about the government's ability to revive the economy and address infrastructure and unemployment issues. Steenhuisen echoed this sentiment, highlighting the potential for significant change. The ANC's electoral setback was attributed to public dissatisfaction with its performance on essential services like water, education, and electricity. Analysts like Melanie Verwoerd view the new cabinet as a positive development but caution that the coalition's success will depend on reconciling ideological differences, particularly around Black empowerment programs, land expropriation, and minimum wage policies. Utah resident Tyler Thompson, 21, has been detained in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following a failed coup attempt last month. His family says they have "zero idea" how he became involved. Thompson, on his first international trip with friend Marcel Malanga, was caught in the aftermath of a coup led by Marcel's father, Christian Malanga, a former DRC politician. The coup attempt on May 19 resulted in the occupation of the Palais de la Nation by heavily armed men. Fifty suspects, including three Americans, were detained . Six people, including Christian Malanga, were killed during the incident. Videos show Thompson being assaulted by Congolese security forces. His family has not heard from him since, and US consular officials have been denied access. Thompson's stepmother, Miranda Thompson, expressed disbelief and concern for his health, describing him as "incredibly kind and generous" and unlikely to participate in a coup willingly. The family has launched a campaign urging public pressure on US officials to secure Thompson's release. The US State Department confirmed it has requested access to detained US citizens but has not yet received it. "We just want to know that he's OK and healthy," said Miranda Thompson.
