- Rwanda's Upcoming Presidential Election: Paul Kagame should accept change," says Victoire Ingabire.
Rwanda's Upcoming Presidential Election: Paul Kagame should accept change," says Victoire Ingabire. Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ayize claire Jul 11, 2024 Opposition leader Victoire Ingabire calls for greater political openness and fair elections in Rwanda. As Rwanda prepares for its presidential and legislative elections on July 15, 2024, the political landscape is marked by controversy. President Paul Kagame, who has led the country since 2000, is seeking re-election for a fourth term. He faces two opponents: Green Party MP Frank Habineza and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana. The elections have been criticized for the exclusion of significant opposition voices. Victoire Ingabire, a prominent opposition figure, was barred from running due to a 2013 conviction that stripped her of her civil rights. Ingabire argues that the exclusion of candidates who could genuinely challenge Kagame undermines the fairness of the elections. "Candidates who are well placed to really challenge President Kagame have been banned," she stated, calling for broader political participation. Ingabire emphasized that political competition should not be controlled by the ruling party. "It is not up to the party in power to choose who should face their candidate," she said, urging for adherence to Rwandan laws that should apply to all parties, including the ruling one. She also called on President Kagame to accept constructive criticism and to embrace democratic alternation for the betterment of Rwanda's future. Despite her inability to run, Ingabire remains a vocal critic, advocating for a political environment where the Rwandan people can freely choose their leaders. Her continued push for political reform highlights the ongoing struggle for democratic space in Rwanda as the country heads to the polls. - Gambian Lawmakers Back Recommendations to Maintain Female Genital Mutilation Ban
Gambian Lawmakers Back Recommendations to Maintain Female Genital Mutilation Ban Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ayize claire Jul 9, 2024 A veiled woman and young girls sit in contemplation, highlighting the deep-rooted cultural practices amidst the ongoing debate on FGM Gambian lawmakers have supported recommendations to maintain the country's ban on female genital mutilation (FGM), ahead of a crucial vote later this month on whether to decriminalise the practice. FGM has been outlawed in Gambia since 2015, yet the practice remains prevalent. The first convictions last year for FGM spurred a backlash against the law. Following a heated debate, a report by the joint health and gender committee was adopted by the full house, with 35 lawmakers voting in favour, 17 against, and two abstaining. The final vote on the bill to decriminalise FGM is set for July 24. If approved, Gambia would be the first country to reverse a ban on FGM. The bill passed its second reading in March with only five out of 53 lawmakers opposing it and one abstaining. The joint committee conducted a national public consultation with various stakeholders , including religious and traditional leaders, doctors, victims, civil society groups, and circumcisers. The conclusions presented on Monday condemned all forms of FGM as a "traumatic form of torture" and "discrimination against women." Amadou Camara, the lawmaker who read out the report, stated that repealing the law would be a significant setback for the Gambia. The first conviction for FGM last August involved three women found guilty of cutting eight infant girls, which sparked outrage. This led independent lawmaker Almaneh Gibba to table the repeal bill in March. Gibba and his supporters, including influential religious leaders, argue that the ban infringes on citizens' rights to practice their culture and religion in the Muslim-majority country. However, many Islamic scholars dispute this claim. The World Health Organization (WHO) asserts that FGM has no health benefits and can result in severe complications such as excessive bleeding, shock, psychological issues, and even death. Alleged Businessman Link Emerges in AKA Murder Trial: Prosecutors Present Evidence Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Prince Jean Mar 29, 2024 Police allege businessman's connection to AKA murder case. @maserumetro In the ongoing trial concerning the tragic murder of South African musician AKA and his companion, court documents have unveiled a potential connection implicating a prominent businessman, Sydney Mfundo Gcaba, from a notable South African family. This revelation comes as prosecutors delve into the backgrounds of the accused gunmen. According to the disclosed court records , a company owned by Mr. Gcaba transferred a substantial sum of over 800,000 rands to one of the suspects, Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni, mere hours after the distressing incident took place. Notably, phone records presented by the prosecution indicate a call between Gwabeni and Mr. Gcaba preceding the financial transaction. As the trial unfolds, Mr. Gcaba has yet to formally address these allegations. Prosecutors assert that the funds disbursed by Mr. Gcaba's company were purportedly divided among the seven suspects implicated in the shooting. Gwabeni, among the accused, contends that the transfer was remuneration for consulting services rendered to the company. However, authorities argue the lack of substantial evidence supporting this assertion. The Gcaba family, renowned for their substantial business enterprises in South Africa, notably within the taxi industry, has refrained from issuing public statements regarding the allegations. Law enforcement agencies are intensifying their investigative efforts to ascertain any potential motives behind Mr. Gcaba's purported involvement in the tragic incident, as the trial progresses. - Zambia's Kwacha Triumphs: The Journey to Becoming Africa's Top Currency in 2024
Zambia's Kwacha Triumphs: The Journey to Becoming Africa's Top Currency in 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Feb 23, 2024 Zambia's Kwacha leads Africa's currencies in 2024, showcasing the power of economic reform and global confidence Economic Renaissance Zambia's Kwacha has made a remarkable turnaround, securing its position as Africa's top-performing currency in 2024. This impressive performance is attributed to a series of strategic economic reforms and political stability ushered in by the new government. The election of President Hakainde Hichilema, a seasoned businessman, brought a wave of optimism, driving the Kwacha to its best year since 2005. The country's focus on restoring investor confidence, particularly in the mining sector, has been pivotal. Zambia, renowned for being Africa's second-largest copper producer, has seen renewed interest from major mining companies and significant investments, further bolstering the Kwacha's strength. Mining Sector Revival The resurgence of the mining industry, especially copper and cobalt, crucial for renewable energy, has played a central role in Zambia's economic recovery. The global demand for these minerals, coupled with the government's favorable policies, has attracted new and existing investors. This rejuvenation is not just limited to copper but extends to nickel, essential for lithium rechargeable batteries and other technologies. These developments have significantly increased Zambia's export revenues, contributing to the Kwacha's robust performance. Debt Restructuring and IMF Bailout Another cornerstone of Zambia's economic revival is the strategic restructuring of its external debt, which had ballooned to $17.3 billion. The government's negotiations with international creditors, including a notable $1.4 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), have been critical. This financial maneuvering has alleviated the pressure on the Kwacha, allowing it to soar to unprecedented levels and attracting more investors to Zambia's local currency bonds. Zambia's journey from being a pandemic-era sovereign defaulter to hosting Africa's best-performing currency is a testament to the impactful economic policies and the government's commitment to sustainable growth. US Lawmakers Lead Resolution to Repeal Uganda's Anti-Gay Law Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Griffith Sarah Jun 27, 2024 Ugandan president Kaguta Museveni and gay rights activists on the right A group of US lawmakers is spearheading a resolution in the House of Representatives to pressure the Ugandan government to repeal its Anti-Homosexuality Act. The resolution, reviewed by The EastAfrican, seeks to address the law's severe penalties for consensual same-sex conduct and its broader implications. The bipartisan effort involves 21 congressmen and women who describe the law as draconian. They argue that it criminalizes homosexuality and imposes harsh punishments, which they view as a violation of human rights. The resolution calls for the continuation of sanctions against Ugandan officials involved in the law's enforcement. These sanctions include visa restrictions for current and former officials responsible for repressing marginalized populations. Additionally, the resolution urges the US to maintain business and travel advisories concerning Uganda. Representatives Mark Takano and Joyce Beatty, who are leading the initiative, also advocate for reducing US support to the Ugandan government until the Anti-Homosexuality Act is repealed. - DR Congo Nears Completion of $1.5 Billion IMF Loan Programme
DR Congo Nears Completion of $1.5 Billion IMF Loan Programme Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe May 9, 2024 President Felix Tshisekedi’s commitment to enhancing the deal’s returns for the country. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced a significant milestone with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), achieving a staff-level agreement on the final review of a pivotal $1.5 billion loan programme. This development signals a potential historic completion of an IMF programme by Congo, marking a departure from past challenges characterized by transparency issues in its crucial mining sector. Historic Agreement Signifies Economic Progress Under the three-year agreement, Congo has demonstrated a commendable performance, meeting most of the IMF's quantitative objectives and slowly but steadily implementing essential reforms. This positive advancement brings Congo to the brink of receiving a final disbursement of approximately $200 million upon approval by the IMF board. Strengthening Governance in Mineral Wealth Management As the world's foremost supplier of cobalt and a leading copper producer, the DRC is under continuous scrutiny to manage its mineral resources effectively. The IMF's statement emphasized the importance of incorporating the economic benefits of the recently amended Sicomines joint venture with Chinese firms into the country’s 2024 budget law. This joint venture, initially established in 2008 with Sinohydro Corp and China Railway Group, was revised earlier this year to maximize benefits for Congo, showcasing President Felix Tshisekedi’s commitment to enhancing the deal’s returns for the country. Ensuring Robust Financial Oversight The IMF has raised concerns regarding the governance over the use of the funds from this joint venture. It advocates for these funds to be deposited directly into the public treasury accounts, a shift from the previous practices of fund management by separate agencies. This move is aimed at boosting financial transparency and ensuring that the benefits are broadly distributed within the Congolese economy. A Stepping Stone Towards Economic Stability This agreement is a testament to Congo's dedication to reforming its economic policies and improving governance. The focus on enhancing transparency in the mining sector and securing better management of public funds is expected to foster a more stable economic environment in Congo. As the country awaits the final approval from the IMF board, the international community watches closely, hopeful for Congo’s continued progress towards economic stability and improved governance. This funding comes at a critical time as the nation struggles with the compounded impacts of natural disasters and climatic adversities. Announced last Friday, the World Bank's grant is part of its "quick release" financing mechanism, designed to provide rapid support to nations in dire need. The aid to Malawi is targeted at enhancing the country's resilience against an intensifying food scarcity crisis. The ongoing food crisis in Malawi is largely driven by the adverse effects of El Niño, which has affected the entire southern Africa region.
