Kenya Arrests Two Suspects in the Heartbreaking Murder of Ugandan Olympian Benjamin Kiplagat Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Johnathan Morris Jan 1, 2024 FILE - Uganda's Benjamin Kiplagat competes in the Men's 3000m Steeplechase Round 1 during the athletics event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 15, 2016. Kenyan police have arrested two suspects in the murder of Ugandan athlete Benjamin Kiplagat, who was found dead with a stab wound to his neck. The two men believed to be in their 30s, were apprehended on the outskirts of Eldoret, a town in the Rift Valley known for being a training hub for athletes. Local police commander Stephen Okal described the suspects as known criminals who have been terrorizing the public. The investigation revealed that the incident occurred after Kiplagat's car collided with the suspects' motorcycle, possibly triggering the violent response. One of the suspects was caught with a knife believed to have been used in the murder. This incident raises concerns about the safety of athletes in the region, especially considering the previous murder of Kenyan distance runner Agnes Tirop in October 2021 under similar circumstances. Kiplagat, a Kenyan-born athlete who represented Uganda, had an illustrious career spanning about 18 years. He won a silver medal at the 2008 World Junior Championships and a bronze at the Africa Championships in 2012. Kiplagat also competed in the 3000m steeplechase at the Olympics in London (2012) and Rio (2016). The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and the police investigation continues, with the suspects expected to be sent to court. This tragic event underscores the vulnerability of athletes and the need for enhanced security measures in areas known for athletic training and competition. - Burundi and Rwanda border closure critical analysis
Burundi and Rwanda border closure critical analysis Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Johnathan Morris Jan 11, 2024 diplomatic tension between Burundi and Rwanda Burundi's Bold Stand Against Rwanda: A Critical Analysis of Kagame's Regime n a move that has sent shockwaves across the East African political landscape, the Burundian government has taken the drastic step of closing its borders with Rwanda and expelling Rwandan citizens. This decision comes in the wake of serious allegations by Burundi accusing Rwanda of supporting the RED-Tabara rebel group, a claim that has been steadfastly denied by Kigali. The RED-Tabara group, known for its violent tactics, has been implicated in a recent attack near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, resulting in the tragic loss of 20 lives, including women and children. This has escalated tensions between the two nations, with Burundi's Interior Minister, Martin Niteretse, openly criticizing Rwandan President Paul Kagame for what he describes as "harboring criminals who harm Burundians. Relations between Burundi and Rwanda have often been strained, with a history of mutual accusations and diplomatic spats. However, this latest closure, following President Evariste Ndayishimiye's accusation of Rwanda's involvement with rebels, marks a significant escalation. Against the backdrop of these developments, the dynamics in the region are complex, particularly with the involvement of both countries in the ongoing instability in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The M23 rebel group, active in this area, is alleged by Western governments and the United Nations to be supported by Rwanda, a claim that the Rwandan government has denied The closure of the Burundi-Rwanda border is not an isolated incident. The border was previously closed in 2015 amid mutual accusations of supporting rebel factions and again reopened in 2022, demonstrating the cyclical nature of tensions between the two nations. This situation raises critical questions about President Kagame's leadership and Rwanda's role in regional stability. Known for his strict governance and controversial policies, Kagame has often been a subject of criticism and admiration in equal measure. His regime's alleged involvement in supporting rebel groups, if proven true, could severely damage Rwanda's standing in the international community and the East African region. Moreover, the closure of borders not only affects diplomatic relations but also hampers the economic and social connectivity that is vital for the prosperity of both nations. It disrupts trade, affects livelihoods, and deepens the divide between communities that share deep historical and cultural ties. As we analyze this unfolding situation, it is crucial to consider the broader implications of such actions on regional peace and security. while Burundi's decision to shut its borders with Rwanda might be seen as a bold stand against alleged aggression, it also serves as a reminder of the fragility of regional alliances and the need for strong, transparent, and peace-oriented leadership in the African Great Lakes region. - The Xtra Historic Moment: From Scandal to World Cup Glory
The Xtra Historic Moment: From Scandal to World Cup Glory Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Prince Jean Jul 1, 2024 Every day, XtrAfrica highlights a World Cup record. Today’s spotlight is on Paolo Rossi, whose remarkable journey in the 1982 FIFA World Cup™ led him to win the adidas Golden Boot. Credit:oguntoday A storm had erupted into a tsunami. Controversy surrounded Paolo Rossi's inclusion in Italy's squad for the 1982 FIFA World Cup™ over Roberto Pruzzo, who had just won back-to-back Capocannonieri titles. Rossi, sidelined by the Totonero scandal, had only played three matches in two seasons. After a dismal first round, the Italian public was outraged. Rossi, failing to score in the group stage, faced immense pressure. Italy, despite being in a supposedly easy group, advanced behind Poland, narrowly beating Cameroon on goal difference. Calls grew louder for coach Enzo Bearzot to replace Rossi with Alessandro Altobelli. Nevertheless, Bearzot persisted with Rossi, ignoring the outcry. Italy scraped past Argentina with a 2-1 win, but Rossi remained goalless, extending his scoring drought for Italy to over three years. The 25-year-old faced harsh criticism, with his private life, attitude, and performance under intense scrutiny. “The pressure I was under was volcanic,” Rossi recalled. “Football is everything to Italians. I was blamed for everything. The press was relentless. I tried to ignore it, but it affected me.” The night before Italy’s crucial match against Brazil, Bearzot visited Rossi’s hotel room. Rossi expected to be dropped, but instead, Bearzot engaged him in a discussion about cubist and surrealist painters like Picasso and Dali to calm his nerves. The unconventional approach worked. Rossi delivered one of the most remarkable performances in World Cup history, scoring a hat-trick to eliminate the title favorites Brazil and end their 24-game unbeaten streak. He then scored twice against Poland in the semi-finals and netted the opener in Italy's 3-1 victory over West Germany in the final. Rossi’s turnaround was extraordinary . Before Italy's fifth game, Zbigniew Boniek, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, and Zico each had four goals, while Rossi had none. Yet, Rossi finished as the tournament's top scorer with the adidas Golden Boot, a feat unmatched by any player who had taken so long to score in the tournament. Credit:FIFA “No other coach would have kept picking me,” said Rossi. “Bearzot’s confidence in me was fundamental. The first goal against Brazil was the most important of my career. It gave me back my confidence. A goal can change everything. For me, it changed my entire life.” More Stories Ethiopia Death Toll from Ethiopian Landslides Rises to 157, Official Says Read More Community Jul 22, 2024 South Sudan South Sudan's Basketball Team: Forging a New countie's image Read More Sports Jul 22, 2024 Nigerian Manchester United Secure NIgerian-Danish Wonderkid Chido Obi-Martin from Arsenal Read More Sports Jul 21, 2024
- Frank Warren Details Reasons Behind Postponement of Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury Bout This Year
Frank Warren Details Reasons Behind Postponement of Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury Bout This Year Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Prince Jean Apr 6, 2024 Anticipated Clash of Titans Deferred. Photo: Boxing News24 Speaking to talkSPORT , boxing promoter Frank Warren provided clarity on the much-anticipated heavyweight clash between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, dispelling the year's remaining hopes for the match. Contrary to the optimistic projections by Matchroom Boxing's Eddie Hearn, Warren laid out a clear explanation of the contractual obligations arising from the upcoming May 18 title fight in Riyadh, which will preclude the possibility of Joshua facing Fury this year. Warren emphasized that the fight's terms include a rematch clause, guaranteeing the loser the option to initiate a second bout due to the substantial financial stakes involved. This clause ensures that the next potential fight for either boxer would be the rematch, contingent upon Fury winning both his engagements and Joshua continuing his winning streak. Additionally, Hearn suggested that Joshua's next fight would be for a heavyweight title, possibly for the IBF crown expected to be vacated or against the victor of Fury versus Usyk. However, the intricacies of the sanctioning bodies' procedures and the rematch clause will likely prevent this scenario, as the IBF would strip the title from the winner if they opt for the rematch, propelling Hrgovic against the next highest-ranked contender, which currently positions Joshua favorably due to the vacancy in the IBF's No.2 spot. - Zimbabwe's Informal Sector Rejects Local Currency Ahead of New Gold-Backed ZiG Launch
Zimbabwe's Informal Sector Rejects Local Currency Ahead of New Gold-Backed ZiG Launch Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Apr 11, 2024 In Zimbabwe, the impending introduction of a new gold-backed currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), at the end of April has led to widespread apprehension among informal traders. These traders are increasingly rejecting the current local currency, the Zimbabwean dollar (Zimdollar), fearing its imminent devaluation. The transition to ZiG marks Zimbabwe's latest attempt to stabilize its economy and combat inflation by introducing a more robust currency. However, memories of past currency failures have left many wary, prompting a shift towards transactions in U.S. dollars, especially within the informal sector, which is predominantly cash-based. Marceline Mupotaringa, a vendor in the outskirts of Harare, reflects the prevailing sentiment as she notes the reluctance of fresh produce farmers to accept Zimdollars, anticipating its further depreciation with the rollout of ZiG. Similarly, Brian Muchemwa, a Harare-based trader, has observed a significant decline in the Zimdollar's value, with its exchange rate plummeting, making transactions in U.S. dollars more practical for his business. "Business entities where the notes have been widely used, including commuter omnibuses, shops, fresh vegetable markets, and vendors, are advised to continue accepting payment in ZW$ notes until April 30, 2024," the central bank said in a statement. The central bank of Zimbabwe has acknowledged these concerns and issued a statement urging businesses to continue accepting Zimdollars until the official transition to ZiG. Despite this, the allure of the more stable U.S. dollar has intensified, particularly on the black market, where exchange rates have surged due to increased demand. While large retail chains and supermarkets have begun to adapt, incorporating ZiG pricing, many still accept Zimdollars, contrasting with the informal sector's rapid shift. This situation underscores the challenges Zimbabwe faces in navigating currency transitions, with the informal sector's response highlighting broader uncertainties about the new currency's potential to restore economic stability. - Tanzania's Economy on the Verge of Becoming East Africa's Largest Economy past Kenya.
Tanzania's Economy on the Verge of Becoming East Africa's Largest Economy past Kenya. Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link louis Buyisiwe Feb 23, 2024 Dar es salaam magnificent city of tanzania Surpassing Kenya Tanzania is on track to surpass Kenya as East Africa's largest economy within the next decade, according to projections by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This shift is attributed to Tanzania's impressive economic growth, fueled by its openness to foreign and domestic investments and its strategic partnerships in various sectors including technology, agriculture, mining, and construction. Tanzania's GDP, currently valued at $85.4 billion, is expected to grow to $136 billion by 2028, potentially outpacing Kenya's projected growth to $151 billion in the same period. Driving Factors Tanzania's rapid economic expansion is largely driven by its government's policies that encourage investment and trade. The nation has fostered relationships with countries and organizations worldwide, enhancing its position as a prime investment destination in Africa. Its commitment to intra-continental trade and efforts to eliminate trade tariffs with East African countries have significantly contributed to its economic momentum. Moreover, Tanzania's collaboration with Kenya on infrastructural projects like cross-border railways further cements its growing economic influence in the region. Future Prospects The anticipation of Tanzania overtaking Kenya underscores a broader trend of changing economic dynamics in East Africa. With its economy poised for substantial growth, Tanzania is embracing a more business-friendly environment under President Samia Suluhu Hassan's leadership. This environment is conducive to innovation and positions Tanzania not only as a fast-growing economy on the continent but also as one of Africa's top investment destinations. The country's strategic moves in fostering a conducive economic ecosystem are pivotal to its ascent as a regional economic powerhouse. - Honoring Uganda's Heroes: Towards Meaningful and Inclusive Celebrations
Honoring Uganda's Heroes: Towards Meaningful and Inclusive Celebrations Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Griffith Sarah Jun 10, 2024 Museveni celebrates Heroes day, originally intended to honour the memory and sacrifices of those who fought for Uganda's independence and stability Uganda's Heroes Day, celebrated annually on June 9, honors those who sacrificed for the nation's liberation and prosperity. However, many Ugandans now view the occasion as a taxpayer-funded extravagance rather than a meaningful tribute. Originally intended to honor those who fought for independence and stability, the day has become a costly spectacle with lavish ceremonies, parades, and extensive media coverage. In a country grappling with poverty, inadequate healthcare, and insufficient educational resources, the financial burden of such celebrations is contentious. Critics argue that the funds spent on Heroes Day could be better used to address pressing socio-economic challenges. Uganda's healthcare system, for instance, is underfunded, with hospitals lacking essential supplies and personnel. Similarly, the education sector suffers from dilapidated infrastructure and a shortage of trained teachers. Redirecting the Heroes Day budget to these areas could significantly improve the quality of life for many Ugandans. Moreover, the current celebrations often spotlight a select group of individuals, mainly those with political connections, leaving many unsung heroes unrecognized. This selective recognition undermines the day's original intent and fosters disillusionment among the public. While honoring Uganda's heroes is commendable, the present approach to Heroes Day has become a financial strain on taxpayers without delivering commensurate benefits. To restore its intended purpose and significance, Heroes Day celebrations should be more modest, inclusive, and meaningful, honoring all contributors to Uganda's progress. Additionally, a reevaluation of budget priorities is necessary to address the country's urgent needs effectively. Rwanda Opposition Leader Questions UK-Rwanda Asylum Agreement Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Griffith Sarah Apr 30, 2024 Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, a Rwandan opposition figure barred from contesting elections Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, a Rwandan opposition figure barred from contesting elections, has expressed skepticism about the Rwandan government's commitment to adhere to a deportation agreement with the UK. Umuhoza, who has been critical of Rwandan President Paul Kagame's administration, highlighted the regime's refusal to let her participate in the political process or leave the country as evidence of its disregard for international law. The UK government, led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, a move Umuhoza argues is compromised by Rwanda's questionable adherence to judicial fairness and international obligations. Her doubts are intensified by her need to seek justice through regional courts, which she believes underlines the lack of judicial independence in Rwanda. The controversy around the UK's decision is further fueled by a UK Home Office report citing significant risks to opposition politicians and journalists in Rwanda, contradicting assertions of the country's safety for returnees. The report mentions forced exiles and possible assassinations among opponents of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), painting a grim picture of the political and civil landscape in Rwanda. Despite Umuhoza's contentious relationship with the Rwandan government, which labels her a criminal, she continues to fight for her political rights and freedom, challenging her disqualification and the conditions of her prior incarceration through legal avenues. The situation raises critical concerns about the effectiveness and ethical implications of the UK-Rwanda deportation agreement, given the reported state of political repression in Rwanda. Kenyan Runners Triumph with Women's-Only World Record at London Marathon Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Prince Jean Apr 21, 2024 Triumphant Kenyan runner Peres Jepchirchir celebrates a groundbreaking victory and a new women-only marathon world record at the London Marathon. Photo:gettyimages Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya set a new world record for a women-only marathon event at the London Marathon on Sunday, April 21, achieving a dual triumph by putting herself in pole position to defend her Olympic title. Jepchirchir delivered an outstanding performance, showcasing a commanding finish and outpacing her competitors to cross the finish line on The Mall with a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 16 seconds. This remarkable feat not only earned her victory but also shattered the previous women-only marathon world record of 2:17:01, set by Mary Keitany in 2017 at the same event. The women’s elite race in London traditionally starts ahead of the men's field, giving the women their own separate contest. For Jepchirchir, this victory is likely to secure her selection for Kenya’s Olympic marathon team for the upcoming Paris Games. Her performance exceeded her own expectations, with her focus on Olympic preparation rather than record-breaking runs. This win marks a significant comeback for her after a third-place finish in the previous year's London Marathon. Jepchirchir's confidence will undoubtedly be fortified by her late sprint to victory, a tactic she believes gives her an edge in the closing stages of a race. Complementing her success was fellow Kenyan Alexander Mutiso Munyao, who claimed victory in the men's race with a time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 1 second. The day was particularly poignant as the London Marathon also commemorated Kelvin Kiptum, last year’s champion from Kenya who tragically passed away in a car accident in February at the age of 24. Argentina vs El Salvador : On March 22, the action kicks off at Lincoln Field in Philadelphia. Expect an intense battle as Argentina fine-tunes their game. 2. Argentina vs Nigeria : Just four days later, on March 26, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will witness a showdown between Argentina and Nigeria. The Argentine Football Federation has officially confirmed this clash. Lionel Messi , Argentina's revered captain, is expected to lead the charge. Unfortunately, his commitment to the national team means he'll miss Miami's Major League Soccer match against the New York Red Bulls on March 23. Previously, Argentina was slated to face Nigeria in Hangzhou and Ivory Coast in Beijing during their China tour from March 18 to 26. However, circumstances led to the cancellation of those games.
