Simba's Narrow Escape: Ahoua's Penalty Secures Opening Victory Prince Jean Nov 28, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Foul Committed for the winning penalty for Simba SC against Bravos do Maquis in the CAF Confederation Cup opener. Simba Sports Club began their CAF Confederation Cup journey with a 1-0 win over Angola's Bravos do Maquis at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on November 27, 2024. The decisive goal came in the 27th minute when Ivorian midfielder Jean Charles Ahoua converted a penalty after Bravos defender Ruben Aderito handled the ball in the box. Ahoua confidently struck the ball to the right of goalkeeper Landu Mavanga. Simba dominated the first half, with forward Steven Mukwala leading several attacks. Despite creating multiple chances, they couldn't extend their lead due to missed opportunities. Bravos improved in the second half, pressing for an equalizer. Their best chance came in the 47th minute when Nigerian striker Emmanuel Edmond's penalty was saved by Simba goalkeeper Moussa Camara, preserving the home team's lead. This victory places Simba at the top of Group A with three points, while Bravos remains without points. The group also includes Algeria's CS Constantine and Tunisia's CS Sfaxien. Simba's head coach, Fadlu Davids, praised his team's performance, stating, "I commend my players for the victory. This is a good start, and our focus now shifts to the next match in Algeria." Simba's upcoming match is against CS Constantine on December 8 at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium in Algeria. Tom Close has been Vaccinated against Marburg Prince Jean Oct 8, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Surgeon, artist and humanitarian Dr. Muyombo Thomas, commonly known as Tom Close, took the vaccine meant for the Marburg virus. He reassures the public that there is no reason to panic because the vaccine is effective. Tom Close was able to ask this in a short interview with IGIHE following the vaccination. Artist and physician Dr. Muyombo Thomas known by the name of Tom Close was vaccinated against the Marburg virus. Instagram/@tomclose He said, “I had no worries. What is there to worry about? Is dying the baddest thing? Until now, the only known deceased were doctors from well established facilities that had adhered to the very strict guidelines regarding staff safety, therefore, there is no reason to panic at all.” Tom Close made this point clear when more doctors started taking the vaccine since they were at high risk of getting the virus infection. As an artist as well as a physician in the team responding to the Marburg outbreak, he has posted on social media in support of the doctors getting vaccinated to prevent the people with the disease more efficiently. There are 36 individuals still on treatment, eight of the cases have been discharged after recovery. In all, 2,387 individuals have been screened for the disease. - Adebayor: Helping Others is More Fulfilling Than Scoring Goals | Xtrafrica
Adebayor: Helping Others is More Fulfilling Than Scoring Goals Prince Jean Oct 24, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Emmanuel Adebayor during his illustrious football career, now focused on empowering the next generation in Togo through education and development initiatives. Credit:gettyimages Emmanuel Adebayor will mark the end of his football career with a testimonial match in Togo on Sunday. The event will see top African and European footballers like Samuel Eto'o, Jay-Jay Okocha, and the Toure brothers come together to celebrate his achievements, including leading Togo to their first and only FIFA World Cup appearance. Now, Adebayor wants to help the next generation in his homeland, driven by his own upbringing and the traumatic 2010 attack on the Togo national team. "Helping people is more fulfilling than scoring in the Premier League or Champions League," the 40-year-old said in an interview with BBC Sport Africa. As a child, Adebayor couldn’t walk for the first few years of his life. His family sought help through spiritual leaders in Ghana, and a football changed everything. One day, a ball rolled into the church, and young Adebayor ran to it. That was the moment his relationship with football began. After starting his career in Togo, Adebayor moved to French club Metz, then to Monaco, before joining Arsenal in 2006. Signing for Arsenal was one of the highlights of his career, especially since his idol was Nwankwo Kanu, and he got to wear Kanu’s number 25 jersey. Adebayor’s standout performances for Arsenal, particularly in 2008, earned him the African Footballer of the Year award, making him the only Togolese player to receive that honor. In 2006, the same year Adebayor joined Arsenal, Togo qualified for their first World Cup, a remarkable achievement for such a small nation. Adebayor scored 11 goals in qualifying, leading the team past the likes of Senegal. While Togo’s World Cup campaign in Germany was disappointing, just making it to the tournament was a major accomplishment. Tragedy struck in 2010 when the Togo team bus was attacked by gunmen in Angola ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. The attack left two people dead, and the survivors, including Adebayor, were deeply affected. "It’s something you never forget," Adebayor said, recalling the trauma from that day. Despite playing for top clubs in Europe, Adebayor won just one major trophy, the Copa del Rey with Real Madrid in 2011. He looks back on his career with no regrets, grateful for the experiences, and continues to stay in touch with managers like Tim Sherwood, who reignited his form at Tottenham in 2013. Since retiring, Adebayor has focused on his foundation, which he set up to help children in Togo access education and opportunities. He hopes to continue making an impact, with plans to open an Emmanuel Adebayor University in the near future. Ethiopia to Save $4.9 Billion Through Debt Restructuring, Says State Minister Ayize claire Aug 3, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Ethiopia is set to receive $4.9 billion in relief from debt repayments upon the completion of its long-delayed restructuring process, State Finance Minister Eyob Tekalign announced on Friday. The East African nation, which became the third economy on the continent to default on its debt at the end of 2023, aims to reinstate the debt overhaul after securing a new financing program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) this week. Debt Restructuring Agreements "We will sign and finalize agreements with each individual creditor country over the course of the next few months," Eyob told Reuters, highlighting the anticipated savings for Ethiopia as a result of the restructuring efforts. The country's total external debt was reported at $28.38 billion as of March this year, according to data from the finance ministry. Economic Reforms and Eurobond Restructuring In a televised speech on Thursday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed discussed recent economic reforms, emphasizing that the expected savings include $200 million from restructuring the nation's $1 billion Eurobond. Eyob elaborated that this could be achieved through a "nominal reduction" of the bond's value as part of the overall debt rework. Currency Reforms and IMF Support Prime Minister Abiy also defended the recent move to a market-determined foreign exchange rate, asserting that it was designed to close the gap between the official and black market rates, rather than devalue the currency. On Monday, the central bank allowed the Ethiopian birr to float freely, meeting a key condition for securing IMF support. Business and Industry Thika Cloth Mills Boosts Kenya’s Cotton Industry . Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation, expressed his delight after learning that Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior has ancestral roots in Cameroon. This discovery followed a DNA test conducted in Brazil, where Vinícius was born. On Tuesday, Vinícius revealed test results showing his lineage traces back to the Tikar people of Cameroon. The test was part of Golden Roots, an initiative aimed at uncovering the African heritage of Black Brazilians, whose ancestors were taken to Brazil during the transatlantic slave trade. Vinícius shared his excitement about the discovery, noting that even his parents were thrilled to learn about their Cameroonian origins. In Cameroon, the news was met with positive reactions, including from Samuel Eto’o , who welcomed the connection. - Fuel Price Surge in Nigeria: NNPC Raises Petrol Prices by Over 15 Percent | Xtrafrica
Fuel Price Surge in Nigeria: NNPC Raises Petrol Prices by Over 15 Percent Alphonse Oct 10, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Nigeria's state oil corporation, NNPC Ltd, has increased the price of petrol by over 15%, the second increase in less than a month, as the country does away with the unfavorable subsidy policy. This comes after a previous move to increase prices which has further worsened an already impacted purse of the company. In Lagos, for instance, the price of NNPC gasoline was hiked to 998 nairas ($0.6257) per liter up from 858 nairas. In Abuja, the price increased to 1,030 naira per liter, which is up from 950 naira, to mention but a few. The hikes led to increased waiting times since customers were faced with higher costs. By September it was known to NNPC company that it was in bad debt and hence declared that it could not continue with the importation of costly fuel because the supplies at their stations lasted weeks and with little fuel left in sight. The firm, which only imports refined petroleum products within Nigeria, is now fully positioned to recover its operational costs in two ways; one is purchasing gasoline from Dangote Oil Refinery at 898 per liter. There are unions in many different sectors and industries who have opposed the price increase and provided valid reasons, such as that it will worsen the already-declining cost of living in the country. As seen with the crude oil prices, gasoline prices remain a hot potato in Nigeria as many still depend on fuel electric generators to power homes because national electricity is quite poor. ‘This is the first time that gasoline is being sold in Nigeria at full market prices in the last three decades,’ commented a government official, which spares the treasury from removing the heavy maintenance speed that was otherwise expected to cost about $3.7 billion to the government this year. - Contaminated Maize Causes Panic in Zambia After 400 Dogs Die | Xtrafrica
Contaminated Maize Causes Panic in Zambia After 400 Dogs Die Ayize claire Aug 22, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link The contaminated maize is believed to have caused the deaths of dogs Zambia is grappling with widespread concern after the deaths of 400 dogs were linked to contaminated maize. Health Minister Elijah Muchima reported that nearly half of the 25 maize samples tested showed dangerously high levels of aflatoxins, a harmful byproduct of mold linked to liver cancer in humans, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The contaminated maize is believed to have caused the deaths of dogs, and authorities are now investigating the potential risk to human health. Although no human fatalities have been confirmed, the Ministry of Health is working to determine if affected plants have made their way into the food supply. The maize contamination is raising alarm in a country where maize constitutes 60% of the population's daily energy intake, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Authorities have begun seizing and testing maize products from various companies, though specific names have not been disclosed. Diamond TV reported that several dog food products made from maize had been pulled from the market. Muchima attributed the rise in aflatoxins to climate change and drought, which have worsened crop conditions this season. Amid growing fears, Zambian citizens are demanding transparency, questioning why the government has not publicly named the contaminated maize brands. The Association of New Companies in Zambia is also conducting its own investigations, intensifying product monitoring as the country seeks to address the issue swiftly. With maize being a staple food for millions of Zambians, the potential impact of this contamination has created widespread concern, with calls for increased inspections and government action to protect public health. - Congo Set to Receive First Mpox Vaccines following Outbreak | Xtrafrica
Congo Set to Receive First Mpox Vaccines following Outbreak Mbeki edmond Aug 20, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Healthcare workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) expects to receive its first mpox vaccine doses next week, thanks to contributions from the United States and Japan. Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba Mulamba announced on Monday that discussions with USAID and the U.S. government had concluded, and vaccines should arrive shortly. This development aims to address the significant vaccine inequity that left African nations without access during the 2022 global mpox outbreak. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared mpox a global public health emergency, particularly due to the rapid spread of the clade Ib variant in Africa. Japan's Ministry of Health confirmed its readiness to supply mpox vaccines to Congo, in collaboration with WHO and other partners. Japan-based KM Biologics and Denmark's Bavarian Nordic are the primary manufacturers of the vaccines. Gavi, the global vaccine alliance, has pledged up to $500 million to support African countries facing mpox outbreaks. Congo has agreed to accept these vaccines as the country battles two strains of the virus: the endemic clade I and the newly emerging clade Ib. Mpox, a viral infection that causes skin lesions and flu-like symptoms, is generally mild but can be fatal . The virus primarily spreads through close physical contact, though it doesn't easily transmit through the air, unlike COVID-19. The tournament will run from June 15 to July 13, 2025, marking the first edition of the newly expanded competition. The final will take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, just five miles from New York City. The other selected venues are: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta TQL Stadium, Cincinnati Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Geodis Park, Nashville Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte Camping World Stadium, Orlando Inter&Co Stadium, Orlando Rose Bowl Stadium, Los Angeles Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia Lumen Field, Seattle Audi Field, Washington DC Qualified Teams and Format Chelsea, Manchester City, and Real Madrid have secured automatic qualification from Europe, having won the Champions League over the past four years. Other European giants like Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Porto, and Benfica will join them based on UEFA's co-efficient rankings. In addition to the eight European teams, six clubs from South America, 12 teams from Asia, Africa, and North America, one team from Oceania, and a club from the U.S. as the host nation will complete the tournament lineup. Previously, the Club World Cup was an annual tournament featuring six continental champions. This revamped format is set to elevate global club football, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino describing it as "the greatest, most inclusive, and merit-based global club competition." Criticism and Opposition FIFA’s decision to expand the competition has faced criticism from clubs and players, especially in light of UEFA’s expansion of the Champions League and Europa League, which now include additional group stage matches. Global players' union FIFPRO and the European Leagues body, representing 1,130 clubs across 33 countries, filed a complaint with the European Commission in July 2023, accusing FIFA of an "abuse of dominance" in football. FIFA has rejected these claims, stating that key stakeholders were consulted during the planning process. Concerns about player welfare have also been raised, with Manchester City midfielder Rodri warning that congested fixture lists are pushing players to the brink of striking.
