The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is probably called “Heaven and the Earth” in Afrikaans, and is such a quiet place situated at the back of the vibrant coastal town of Hermanus. Featuring picturesque views of the rolling vineyards, towering mountains and the ocean close by, it is often preferred by wine lovers. Half an hour’s drive from Johannesburg lies the coastal area which is famous for these breezes which help them achieve high quality grapes. Apart from wine tasting for the tourists, there are also scenic walks and expensive food which are available in the wine farms found in the valley. 1.Creation Wines


There are so many reasons to be in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley and Creation Wines is one of them. Creation Wines is well known for its remarkable wine and food pairings, which is quite significant because no trip to Creation Wines is complete without a visit. The wonderful cuisine is further diversified with several tasting options, including foods paired with brаnch, with small рlаtes, and several other tastings such as wiпe with chocolate or wiпe wіth brannies paired by a wіnery. Ataraxia Wines is also found at the highest point in the valley, courtesy of gravity…and this is where I have to admit, just to live up with its meaning ‘a tranquil state of mind’- wow how do they manage that. The estate features wines which are in their original form and made without unnecessary input so they stand out by the own potentials. A uniquely built tasting room to pay tribute to the architecture of the Overberg region, Is the tasting room quite serene for wine enthusiasts.

However if you purchase any of the wines on offer, the R75 tasting fee will not be charged making it a good place to visit on a lazy afternoon.

4. Hamilton Russell Vineyards

A picturesque 170 hectare piece of land is home to Hamilton Russell Vineyards. Their tasting room offers a peace of a lake view surrounded by green as well as appealing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These includes homemade olive oil and fynbos honey that are sold at the farm shop.

5. La Vierge

La Vierge is situated high on the mountain in the valley and breathtaking views up to the ocean can be seen from here. The estate offers a glass-walled tasting room with panoramic views which is the ideal place where guests can taste award winning wines. The menu features plenty of options including pasta, lamb shanks among other offerings, and the food is served on the outside deck.

6.Newton Johnson

Newton Johnson

The estate is appreciated for its modern South African main dishes and unique wine blend. Newton Johnson is a family-owned estate situated barely 10 min from Hermanus. Small as it is, visitors can still take vineyard tours and later order either a share platter or a seasonal cuisine served by the restaurant within the estate.

7.Bosman Hermanus


Open and surrounded by fynbos hills is a peculiar modern building known as a Frame House and it is Bosman Hermanus winery. The venue also serves food, crispies, coffee and trekkers may walk around the estate’s trails.

8.Bartho Ecksteen

Established in the year 2015, Bartho Ecksteen is a private vineyard in the form of a wine farm owned by a family that specializes in making wines. Enjoy the expanse of green and flowers in their grounds, eat light snacks from Maná Deli then attempt playing boules with some friends. Finally head to the farm shop to grab some of the homemade( non-alcoholic) preserves or baked goodies before leaving.

9.Spookfontein Wines

Perched on a scenic hill is Spookfontein Wines, also offering breathtaking views of the Overberg. The guests have an option of farm style meals at the estate’s restaurant or to stay in one of the lovely cottages.

10.Whalehaven

Whalehaven is a family winery owned by the Bottega family. It takes its name from the sheltered bay where the southern right whales breed. It specializes in making wines such as Merlot , Cabernet, Franc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. An opportunity to visit the valley in safari style is also available to the guests.
