UK's Asylum Seeker Transfer Plan to Rwanda Faces Intense International Criticism

The two U.N. leaders Filippo Grandi and Volker Turk call for the UK to reconsider its transfer strategy.

The United Kingdom's controversial decision to transfer asylum seekers to Rwanda has sparked significant backlash from top United Nations officials. On Tuesday, Filippo Grandi, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, and Volker Turk, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, urged the UK government to reconsider this policy, emphasizing its potential to undermine human rights and refugee protection significantly.

In a forceful joint statement, the officials highlighted the policy's departure from the UK's longstanding tradition of providing sanctuary to those in need.

"This new legislation not only steps away from the UK's historical commitment to refuge but also violates the principles of the Refugee Convention," Grandi stated.

Volker Turk previously criticized the policy, reiterating his concerns by labeling the move as a serious threat to the rule of law within the United Kingdom and a dangerous precedent for global governance.

"The legislation seriously hinders the rule of law in the UK and sets a perilous precedent globally," Turk remarked.

The push for this legislation comes amidst broader international efforts to manage migration more strictly. Following the recent approval by the UK's upper parliament, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced plans to initiate the transfer of asylum seekers to Rwanda within the next 10 to 12 weeks. This decision aligns with similar international strategies, like Italy's plan to construct reception camps in Albania to handle the influx of migrants arriving by sea.

This policy shift has attracted attention worldwide, prompting debates on the balance between controlling illegal migration and adhering to international human rights standards.
