Imagine living in a country where war has never ended. For 30 years, people in eastern Congo have lived with fear, gunshots, and tears. But now, hope is shining again.

On Wednesday, July 9, US President Donald Trump spoke to the world. He said that by the end of this month, Congo and Rwanda will sign a peace agreement. This signing will happen in Washington DC, with President Félix Tshisekedi of Congo and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda coming together.

A Deal That Could End 30 Years of Pain

Eastern Congo has seen endless fighting. Millions have died. Many people blame Rwanda for supporting the M23 rebels and sending troops into Congo. This has caused pain and anger for years.

President Trump said:

“It was a long and hard struggle, but both countries are very pleased today that we were able to resolve this issue.”

He added that the final agreement will be signed in the next two weeks. Just last week, the foreign ministers of both countries visited the White House to prepare for this moment.

Who Helped Make This Happen?

Trump praised his senior advisor for Africa, Massad Boulos, for working hard behind the scenes. Many people thought peace between Congo and Rwanda was impossible. But Boulos played a key role in bringing the two sides to the table.

Trump said:

“I have read articles, I have heard testimonies, and it was a terrible conflict.”

A War That Killed Millions

On June 27, the foreign ministers of Congo and Rwanda spoke about the human cost of this war. They said nearly 7 million people have died because of the fighting. Some believe the real number is even higher.

Imagine that. Millions of lives lost. Families destroyed. Children grew up without parents.

Can This Peace Last?

Many Congolese are hopeful but cautious. They want to see real change, not just words on paper. They want the guns to fall silent. They want to farm their land in peace. They want to send their children to school without fear.

This agreement could bring that dream closer.

As President Trump said, this war was terrible. But now, the world waits to see if these two nations can finally build peace together.

For the mothers, fathers, and children of eastern Congo, may this be the start of a new chapter – a chapter of hope, safety, and life without fear.
