Osabuohien Osaretin, known professionally as Sarz, a prominent figure in the Afrobeats music scene, has recently articulated his belief that he has played a pivotal role in shaping the genre's sound. In a statement delivered via a video on his Instagram, Sarz expressed that his innovative creation, termed "Samba," marked a significant turning point in Afrobeats music, setting a new standard for fellow producers.
He credits singer Wizkid for being the first to fully embrace and understand his musical vision, emphasizing that at the time of its inception, "Samba" was a unique and unprecedented sound within the industry.
Further elaborating on the influences shaping Afrobeats, Sarz highlighted the indelible impact of Fela Kuti, the legendary Afrobeat pioneer.
He asserted that Kuti's integration of Afrobeat rhythms, jazz, and funk has not only been foundational for the genre but continues to inspire a broad spectrum of artists, including notable figures like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Rema, among others. Sarz acknowledged that Fela's music serves as a reservoir of inspiration from which he, too, draws, particularly in sampling and reimagining elements from Fela's extensive catalog to enrich contemporary Afrobeats productions. This acknowledgment underscores the enduring legacy of Fela Kuti's artistry and its influence on successive generations within the music industry.
