ARUSHA, Tanzania — After a prolonged period of trade tensions, Kenya and Tanzania have reached a resolution on the export of poultry and poultry products, a move hailed as a significant step towards enhancing trade relations within the East African Community (EAC). The breakthrough was announced following a two-day consultative meeting at the EAC headquarters in Arusha, which concluded on Tuesday.
Key Developments in the Kenya-Tanzania Poultry Trade Dispute
The resolution of the dispute promises to revitalize the poultry trade between these two neighboring countries, which has been marred by restrictions and trade barriers. Rabson Wanjala, representing the Kenyan High Commissioner to Tanzania and co-chair of the meeting, emphasized the mutual commitment to bolstering trade ties.
"Both nations recognize the necessity of collaboration to boost trade across the region," Wanjala stated.
Benezeth Lutege Malinda, Tanzania's acting director of veterinary services at the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, affirmed Tanzania's dedication to overcoming trade obstacles. "Our focus is on clearing non-tariff barriers that have hindered seamless trade,
" Malinda explained, underlining the country's efforts to create a conducive environment for trade.
Historical Context and Impact of the Poultry Ban
The dispute dates back to 2021 when Tanzania imposed a ban on Kenyan poultry imports, including day-old chicks and eggs, due to fears of highly pathogenic avian influenza.
This ban significantly affected Kenya's poultry industry, disrupting access to a crucial market and escalating trade tensions between the two countries.
Veterinary authorities from both Kenya and Tanzania participated in the meeting, aiming to address and resolve the issues surrounding the ban effectively.
Looking Ahead: Fostering Regional Trade and Cooperation
The resolution of the poultry export dispute is a positive development for both nations, signaling a forward momentum in regional cooperation and economic integration. The easing of restrictions is expected to rejuvenate the poultry sector in both countries, benefiting farmers and businesses involved in the trade of poultry goods.
As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties, both Kenya and Tanzania continue to engage in dialogues and meetings to ensure that such trade barriers are minimized, fostering a robust trade environment within the East African region.
