Greek law allows all migrants seeking asylum to register their claim on several of the islands at special registration centres.
But our interviewees - who we contacted with the help of migrant support body Consolidated Rescue Group - said they were apprehended before they could get to these centres.

Witnesses have accused the Greek coastguard of causing migrant deaths in the Mediterranean, with allegations of deliberate actions leading to fatalities.

The BBC’s investigation, supported by eyewitness accounts, suggests a pattern of forced returns and abandonment at sea, resulting in at least 43 deaths from May 2020 to 2023.

A Cameroonian survivor recounts being thrown overboard by Greek authorities, leading to the drowning of his companions.

The Greek coastguard denies illegal activities, but evidence presented in a new documentary raises serious concerns about their conduct.
