Esther Passaris urges Uhuru to support Ruto for Kenya’s progress and unity

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has urged former President Uhuru Kenyatta to support President William Ruto’s government, saying that his backing is essential for the country’s progress.

Speaking on Wednesday, March 5, Passaris stressed the importance of unity among leaders, emphasizing that a former president should stand with the current one for the nation to move forward.

“It is very important for a former president to support the current president because if he (Uhuru) doesn't do that, our government won't be progressive,” she stated.

Passaris noted that Uhuru has a strong relationship with ODM leader Raila Odinga and expressed hope that he would follow Raila’s example by prioritizing Kenya’s development over political differences.

“But because I know that he is close with Baba (Raila) and Baba is someone who looks at ways to make Kenya move forward, I would ask Uhuru to put differences aside and prioritize Kenya and how it can be progressive,” she said.

She also reminded Uhuru that he is the only living former president of Kenya and encouraged him to bring together key leaders, including President Ruto and Raila, to foster unity.

“You are the only living past President of Kenya; you have huge investments and family in this country. You can sit down with Ruto, Raila, and people of like mind to drive this country in the right direction,” she added.

Her remarks come about four months after President Ruto visited Uhuru at his home in Gatundu. The visit on December 9, 2024, happened just weeks after they had met in Embu during the installation of Bishop-Elect Peter Kimani Ndung’u as the Catholic Bishop of the Embu Diocese. Several leaders, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, were also present at the event.

During the ceremony, Uhuru spoke about the importance of unity and called for an end to tribalism in Kenya. He urged leaders and citizens to respect each other to create a peaceful and cooperative country.

"Let us pray for peace in Kenya. Let us pray for cooperation between Kenyan citizens and leaders. Let us stop tribalism and let us love each other. If a leader respects the people and their wishes, the people will respect them back a hundredfold," he said.
