Kenyan man arrested for setting up a fake police post and impersonating law enforcement.

Imagine living in a village where a fake police station operates for six whole months without anyone noticing! This is exactly what happened in Cherus Center, Kesses Sub-County, Uasin Gishu. Residents were left in shock when they discovered that what they thought was a real police patrol base was actually fake!

The man behind this bizarre scheme is Collins Letting, also known as Chepkulei. He went to great lengths to make his illegal operation look real. He painted the building in official police colors, set up detention cells, and even ran operations like a real security post. But here’s the crazy part: even the local chief had no idea that the station was fake!

For six months, Letting and his team 'policed' the area, targeting people caught with unlicensed timber from Cengalo Forest. Many villagers trusted the station, thinking it was there to improve security. How did he pull this off for so long? Why didn’t anyone question it earlier?

The truth came out on March 8 when real police officers discovered the illegal station. Shocked, they immediately reported it at Kamuyu Police Post under case OB04/08/03/2025. According to the law, only the Inspector-General of Police has the authority to set up police stations. So why did Letting take matters into his own hands? Was he working alone, or did he have powerful connections protecting him?

Residents now fear for their safety. “If fake police stations can exist, are we really safe?” asked one villager. The police have promised a full investigation, and Uasin Gishu County police commander Benjamin Mwanthi assured locals that officers will dig deeper into the matter.

A meeting with the community has been scheduled to discuss the situation further.

The big question remains and what was Letting’s real motive? Was he trying to enforce his own version of justice, or was there something more sinister behind his actions? And how many more fake operations like this could be out there?
