President William Ruto has confirmed that the United States will continue to fund the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti. This assurance follows a phone conversation between Ruto and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Despite the Trump administration’s recent decision to halt financial aid for many programs, Ruto emphasized that the MSS mission is not affected by this freeze.
“Our discussion confirmed that the United States has specifically exempted its support for the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti from the broader pause on federal assistance, recognising the critical need to sustain momentum for the mission and its role in stabilising Haiti and restoring order,” he stated.
He also noted that Rubio reiterated the US government’s commitment to helping Haiti regain peace. Furthermore, they discussed bilateral relations between Kenya and the US, agreeing to strengthen their cooperation.
“We reviewed bilateral relations between Kenya and the US and reaffirmed our mutual commitment to strengthening our existing cooperation,” Ruto added.
In addition, their conversation touched on regional security issues in Africa, particularly the ongoing situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). They also spoke about the upcoming joint meeting between the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC), which is set to take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Friday and Saturday
